Is it me or are there a zillion DOTA games out there. I typed rts roleplaying games and there was like 30 dota clones. It almost as if a new genere has spawned with these tower games.
I cant say which is best. All i can say is there is alot of them.

The game style originates from "Aeon of Strife" which is what set the mechanics of lane based defense between 2, 3 or 4 different teams.
What Dota did is put a lot of focus on gameplay balance and mechanics while flooding the game with tons of variety and content that is constantly updated, making it an extremely replayable game. -
and then came LoL, HoN, and DotA 2

"Hi-Rez also mentioned that its MOBA game, Smite, is entering closed beta on May 31. Like Tribes, pre-ordering the game ($20) will grant beta access beginning on that date. Gods! Gods that fight."
I another words, i get to play it in 2 days. xD
@@@!!!! -
I would love to play dota but its not a noob friendly game. you really have to know all the classes and there abilities so you know when to run or when its safe to stick around. if you hop in game with no clue what your enemies can do your screwed.

That's why playing with bots is the best way to learn. The skills are easy to learn but the items are harder.
-
There's the option of playing with friends only too against bots ._. Baka learnt from 1v1ing Baka's friend. It was hell learning
And once Baka learnt what item does what, everything just comes naturally ._. Look at hero's skills, think up of items that'll match well with skillset. -
I would recommend bots too. For inventory you can start off with checking out guides from DotA Guides. It is good for starters. Once you have understood the heroes and the basic game play you can decide on your own inventory depending on the situation and the opponents.
Do not get into GG or any online gaming clients hoping to learn as it will be a really bitter experience. Dota as you mentioned earlier is definitely not a NOOB friendly game. But that does not mean its difficult. Take your time and pick simple heroes that have good killing combos initially that can make the learning process fun. Nothing can motivate you like the sight of a well earned kill.
Start off with ranged heros initially to learn the very basics of the game. Melee heroes can be tricky early on as they are prone to attack in the lane. Lina, Rylai, Rhastha and other int heros can be easier initially as they have nukes tat can get you easy kills initially. The agi heroes are also easy but they get stronger only late game. The melee agi are the hardest to play as they are practically helpless early game. So keep tat for the last.
Try to pick one hero and learn the basics thoroughly. Then start switching to new heroes and start learning their skills. Dota is not just about knowing your hero well but is equally about knowing your opponent. -
There isn't a million Dota....
There actually less then 10 M.O.B.A titles available and besides Smite, I don't think there are any new ones in the near future. -
If you wanna give this a spin, check out Super Monday Night Combat
it combines the elements of a Dota clone (the leveling of skills, different roles, and lane fighting ) but with FPS elements involved in a 3rd person perspective.
Its alot more fast paced than a Dota game where a typical match can last 20-30mins. Ive had alot memorable matches there that left me feeling like a god haha
