Indeed... however, if 470 actually draws around 75W while delivering 980m performance (which would be consistent with performance per watt improvements AMD achieved), then a 110W Polaris 10 (full desktop type and stock 1266MhZ) could push the performance into Fury (non X) area, or on par with Fury X most likely.

This all really depends on how high of a TDP limit will AMD (or OEM's) use. For top end polaris 10, I can easily see them using the stock desktop 480 level performance while the actual desktop would offer faster (overclocked) versions that would reach stock 1070 levels of performance (at least as far as synthetic benchmarks are concerned - actual in-game performance could end up higher).

AMD is not Nvidia after all, so they might end up surprising us with this.

Well there is the option for a connector on the board so hopefully one of the AIBs picks it up..

That's what I thought, but I think that it requires RAMDAC for CRT/VGA/Analogue support. If it doesn't have, let's hope that someone would be crazy enough to put a custom one that works up to 600MHz for some crazy resolutions and refresh rates. Chances are non-existent, since the very limited market.

I believe the response from MSI and ASUS was that the cards they sent to the reviewers are set in OC mode by default whereas retail versions are set to gaming mode by default. Here's the official statement from ASUS:
    OFFICIAL STATEMENT

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 graphics cards come with exclusive GPU Tweak II software, which provides silent, gaming, and OC modes allowing users to select a performance profile that suits their requirements. Users can apply these modes easily from within GPU Tweak II.

The press samples for the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080 OC and ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1070 OC cards are set to “OC Mode” by default. To save media time and effort, OC mode is enabled by default as we are well aware our graphics cards will be reviewed primarily on maximum performance. And when in OC mode, we can showcase both the maximum performance and the effectiveness of our cooling

Retail products are in “Gaming Mode” by default, which allows gamers to experience the optimal balance between performance and silent operation. We encourage end-users to try GPU Tweak II and adjust between the available modes, to find the best mode according to personal needs or preferences. For both the press samples and retail cards, all these modes can be selected through the GPU Tweak II software. There are no differences between the samples we sent out to media and the retail channels in terms of hardware and performance.

    Sincerely,

    ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.

However, they could still be binning cards specifically for ASIC quality to send to reviewers.

Or, we could just wait for the reviews of the EVGA/Gigabyte/Zotac cards to come out.

It isn't that they've been shipping review samples which are overclocked out of the box.

It's that they've been doing it without informing reviewers or consumers that they're doing it.

The word for this is "deception".

I agree completely, I was merely providing the correct context in which to evaluate the situation. They should have definitely informed the reviewers of this change beforehand.

The cooling looks interesting - no heat-pipes, no vapor chamber, pretty sparse radiator. Interesting indeed. Wonder why we wont see RX-480 in mobile form.

    This is still before NDA...
However, it does bode well for 470 for example being similarly powerful as 980 most likely (at least with early drivers) in DX11 in mobile. Or they can just slap full 480 in the laptop if it will draw around 110W on base levels.
Just imagine how much performance could jump with improved drivers (with the new Radeon division) in DX11 and 12.

One doesn't need to expect much. AMD itself showcased 2 demo's to date which gave us a good indication that 480 can run games at 2k in DX12 really well at high settings.
I tend to go with what AMD posted, not third grade benchmarks before NDA that could make anything up.
Granted, AMD themselves could have skewed results, but when showcasing single Polaris 10 GPU with demo's? I don't think so (or at least it would be minimized in a sense to reduce the performance problems brought about by inefficient drivers).

One thing I never understood... why is it that drivers are almost never optimized at release for new GPU's?

Nvidia not likely to take it lightly. Perhaps this bodes well if AMD have balls to do that.

480 doesnt seem to OC well but still all samples should hit 1300mhz+ for just $200.

Perhaps 490 will feature higher clocks specs.

There won't be a Polaris 10 490 based gpu as far we know. The 490 will most likely be vega. Since vega is due to be an hbm2 gpu, I don't know if overclocking will be any better than on first hbm gpus (fury line).

However, there have been some unsubstantiated talks of 480 reaching 1500mhz overclock. Plus, right now, the only article talking about overclocks has shown that the alleged 480 had the fan running at mere 50% (hence the temperatures). Plus, how much did AMD improve Polaris architecture and IPC over it's previous generation that could essentially see higher performance at relatively lower clocks?.

Let's wait for tge official release, plus the official drivers and proper fan utilisation before saying anything that might not be able to stand up to scrutiny

My guess is Polaris is being temperature and power throttled once you start OCing it.. Probably some custom fan profiles and a 8 pin connector should solve this on the AIB boards.. But lets wait and see.. Initial results are promising to say the least..

It is certainly plausible that Polaris ends up being temp and power throttled after OC-in, however, we have no way of verifying that as of yet (due to lack of actual GPU on hand).

But also, if the GPU is indeed experiencing such throttling simply due to OC-ing, don't you think that custom fans and 8 pin connector would be useless to alleviate the problem as it might point to silicon limitations?

All in all, if the current information released by AMD is accurate, baseline clocks will have 480 not draw more than 110W.
OC-ing to 1400 would still be well within its TDP... I would imagine that only going beyond 1500 or 1600 MhZ (or theoretically 1700?) might present problems in providing adequate power before reaching the 150W limit as allowed by the interface itself.

As for the temperatures... the target temperature in those leaks was set too high, hence the fan running at 50%.

For mobile solutions though, I would imagine that achieving 65 to 70 degrees C on full load would be more than doable with fans set to full.
Also, let's not forget undervolting. Both AMD and Nvidia use higher than usual voltage settings for stability... but they don't really test the individual units to see what their individual lowest voltage could be at stable full load.

I think AMD decided that it's doing pretty good so it's time to do something stupid like overhyping everybody even though most people were already up to buying RX 480 and using questionable marketing style tactics.

    How did AMD overhype everybody?
Beyond the 2 demo's in DX12 that seemingly showed higher than FuryX and 980ti performance at highest settings in one of them and 2k, very little actual information came out of AMD.
The rest are just rumors released by people who may or may not know anything conclusive about 480 and do not bother to report which drivers are used, what are they testing, or actual gaming performance (it's very dodgy to begin with and I cannot understand how can people fall for these unsubstantiated claims in the first place?).

Yes, those leaks could be accurate, but they also might not be, and until the NDA is lifted and we actually see how the gpu performs under proper conditions, getting worked up over 'rumors' is down to people who get easily manipulated by various things they read without questioning them in the first place or having information to put things into proper context.

RX 480 is going to be GTX 980 counterpart, or better ? I have seen some graphs that are suggesting even 980ti, but it would be too good to be true...
Still only for this rumours stocks of amd doubled this year lol.

I say expect around 980 level of performance. That's very good for the price. Don't expect more even if you can OC to get much better performance, because the silicon lottery might not be on your side.

Yeah, but oc should be at least as good as it was on gcn, so 200mhz should be within the target.
GTX 980 for 199$ is very good. But they should come up with other prices for Eastern Europe, because it's sometimes so unfair calculating (nv wants 1USD = 5,29 PLN at nvidia lauch gtx 1080, which is ridicouls even with today's price of USD =4PLN).

Pitting it up against OC'ed cards isn't very telling, as an OC'ed 970 can reach stock 980 levels, and they do mention the tests aren't done on AMD's most recent drivers, all 3 games benchmarked are DirectX 11 titles, we should see more gains in DX 12 games .
Performance will most likely be just shy of a 980 in DX 11, and should beat it by a healthy amount in DX 12 .

I didn't see OC. This changes situatuon, still I wouldn't count to beat a GTX 980. Even in DX12.
Nvidia is improving the dx12 driver, so they will be matching for me.

Well, recent synthetic benchmarks clearly show 980 level of performance. That Polish site did those tests a week ago and even at that time they used older drivers. We shall wait and see what happens when AMD provides drivers specifically for the new RX series, but I'm expecting at least 390X performance with the first driver and potentially Fury-level in a month or two.

970 amp edition is like 10% slower than stock 980, so there are good chances the reference RX 480 will match stock 980 with designated drivers and in DX11. DX12 is a whole different story, since when nicely implemented, it gives a significant boost (in Hitman DX12 mode, 390X outperforms 980 Ti/TitanX).

Uh huh... I see people comparing OC-ed gpu's to the alleged results 480 achieved thus far and I can only say this:
Your overclocked cards are in turn consuming a lot more power than a stock 480 will (which will probably by all accounts and purposes in DX11 be equivalent to 980 upon release, and possibly end up close to if not the same as Fury X with subsequent driver releases while consuming far less power in the process).

Overclocking has a tendency of increasing power consumption by quite a bit. The 480 has 150W thermal ceiling while in reality will consume about 105 to 110W in total at stock.

That's of course theoretical performance at DX11... DX12 is where this card will probably show even more performance.
In short, if the high end laptops get a full polaris 10 (which is doable)... we could easily undervolt it and reduce it's power consumption by quite a bit even further.

970 being overclocked to reach or even surpass 980 tells me very little, considering that the power consumption by that point goes to what... nearly double of 480 while providing same, or possible slightly higher performance?
    No thanks.

So it can lock oc on rx480. Cd action says that their rx wasnt good overclocked, max oc was 5%.

this is such a AMD problem everytime there is a release. Reviews and spotlight on the product are normally at release. Its at release that AMD should get its drivers sorted not 2 months after the release.

Folks are going to remember, that AMD card was behind Nvidias equivalent by 10-15% at release. Its not going to matter much if AMD matches nvidias performance 2 months later. noones going to buy a card now, in the hope that driver optimizations will be in place by 2 months.

    So?
Reference cards aren't necessarily good overclockers.
If you want to reach the thermal maximum of 150W as provided by PCI-e, you will likely need a better designed cooler for 480 that will come from other vendors.

Overclocked 970 results come from designs that have suitable coolers.
None of the tests conducted thus far on 480 tell us anything conclusive. If the temperatures are high, why were the target temperatures set to 90 degrees C which in turn resulted in the reference cooler to run at mere 50%?
Why is the reference card designed with very bad cooling in the first place?
Why does the gpu contain such a high voltage? Why not try undervolting it?
    What drivers were used?

As for the drivers... the new Radeon division might speed things up a bit when it comes to driver releases and creating drivers of generally higher quality.
They certainly did a good job until now... so let's see what they do with 480.

Certainly they havent still sort up bussiness with dx11 comapred to nvidia, and I think they will never do it. Probably just thinking to wait for dx12
