Please let me know if I am incorrect on this information.

From what I understand, Even if you have a 120hz monitor, if your graphics card is limited to displaying 60ghz, you will never experience seeing a difference between 60fps and 120fps.

My other question is, are there any mobile cards today that can display at 120hz? I know my brothers computer has a 120hz screen so I'm assuming the card is capable of displaying 120hz. What about latest cards such as 980m or the 295x?

The only limitation of 60Hz I can think of is iGPU aka Optimus notebooks. If you have Intel GPU as 2nd recognized then no 120Hz.

Any modern card supports 120hz and I even think intel can (though it can be a bit tricky to set up). Of course no optimus is required for 3d operation.

    I have a 144hz 1440p asus swift running off my 980M cards.

Have my Asus 144hz monitor running off my 970m with no issues. It also worked off my 780m perfectly fine too. Both times I used my Mini DP to Display Port on the monitor. And my notebook also has Optimus.

Yeah, you MSI GT have video ports connected to dGPU and not all notebooks have this.

Good point! I should have clarified it runs off the dGPU when using external video ports.

They always have their own MXM design so it is a limiting factor. If you need a 120Hz with a laptop then just do a good search and find some Clevo or that kind notebook with built-in 120Hz matte/glossy monitor with QM mobile CPU and 9xxm GPU.

Asus GPU's are not upgradeable... They have their own world of MXM.. However, optimus wise, new G751 doesn't have it and also the old G750JW/JX/JH don't have it so you'll be fine with this..

You do not need a dedicated card to run more than 60Hz to a external display. You do need something other than HDMI. Display port or DVI (yeah right) will do the job.

Now if you are talking about the internal LCD - then yes. I haven't seen a laptop use a 120hz screen that also used integrated graphics. Any system you see with a internal LCD at 120Hz will have the integrated GPU disabled.
