Well , it seems that ntoebookcheck.net has chosen to put 7970m CF on top of GTX 590 ( pc GPU ) when it comes to performance ?

can check it out here : AMD Radeon HD 7970M Crossfire - Notebookcheck.net Tech

to the right you will see a list of GPU cards and in class 1 , 7970m CF is on top over GTX 590. they havn't presented any benches yet or whatever.. so im just guessing on what is this based ? pure clock stats ?

if this is the case, then im very impressed, that an alienware m18x can perform better than a GTX 590 single card which is an overkill for any game that is out there...

It's based on early benches, some people got hold of the cards early on and tested then without proper driver support do there is room for improvement
If you scroll down you'll see that there is one bench there the Vantage bench in which the 7970m CF beats 590 by 19%

And that's without proper drivers. I'd say add 10% to those scores, at the very least.

impossible.. an overclocked 7970m can reach a 580 level (almost) and 590 is 580 sli basically (a little underclocked), if it happens, then we have something :)

    Impossible is nothing!
Jokes aside 7970m does reach about 5-10% of gtx 580 at stock clocks
So two 7970m should be about 10-20% of a 580 sli but since the 590 is daily underclocked the cf 7970n should be able to easily reach or even beat the 590.
Also consider the driver support is basically minimum ATM and cf isn't even properly working on m18x yet we have space for a lot of wiggle room (40-50k vantage possibly/hopefully )

Looking at the benchmarks again the 590 beats the 7970m by approx 40-50% meaning it should be very feasible to beat that in xfire :)

Since the 580 is older tech I'd imagine the 7970Ms will pull through as much as 20% on some newer games vs. the 590/580SLI desktop variants.

I would hope so (With Xbox 720 having 2 GPUs). It's not even the graphics anymore that's the problem. The gameplay of the games being released to day is pretty bad IMO.

Plus Diablo 3 runs just fine on 6990M Xfire :p.

Diablo 3, guild wars 2, crysis 3, company of heroes 2, Blackops 2, elder wars mmo, swtor, wow, metro 2033, bf3 should all be fine on both systems (buying all of these will make me broke!)

Metro 2033 runs like crap on my system on max details. Crysis 2 does as well with DX11 but the programming has been questioned. There was tessellation in places that no one could see etc... poor optimization.

Crysis 2 has been badly optimised especially since they tried to cater to consoles as well but try lowering the settings on metro 2033 and you should be fine

It does run fine on high, which is not the highest though :p. I had a GTX 480 (when it released!) before this system so it's nothing new to me.

No game that is out there, doesn't disturb the gtx 580 or to say doesn't even come close to use its max potential... So if 7970m CF is over gtx 580 i can gladly say that this is a very future proof system... And i even doubt that in the next two years there will be a game that will require more than gtx580 to be played on ultra settings...

How is that possible? CF 6990 and an i7? What FPS are we talking?

It's not a mild downclock, the 590 is clocked 25% lower than the GTX580 and good luck trying to overclock it, you get very realistic smoke effects if you do (it already consumes 375W at stock).

LOL @ the realistic smoke effects

ok, here is my thought process.

A single 7970m is directly comparable to a gtx 570m

Here is a 3dmark11 run i did last night:
    AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2820QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P7130 3DMarks

So if you crossfire them, and you get good scaling, you have a gtx 590. Meaker is correct, the gtx 590 is more gtx 570 sli because its downclocked

If you overclocked the 7970m's and xfire'd them, and you get good scaling, you would have faster than gtx 590 speeds. Its very plausible in my books

Nice find! Geo...i wonder what kind of numbers after a nice overclock?

I think i know who ran these benches...this is off an ES m18x R2 tester...and the drivers they are using are really old. I have these drivers sitting on my desk. Apparently, the 12.5 betas that we are using don't work nice on xfire 7970's yet. So we will definitely see better scores as time goes on. Very exciting times ahead!!
