I just finished installing the Catalyst 5.12 drivers. I ran through the Canals in Half-Life 2 to test - I didn't notice any performance increase, but it still ran flawlessly!

Installed it on my T42 with 9600 - the thing sucked down completely. Menu opening slowed to a crawl, fullscreen games wouldn't run and when I tried launching the Catalyst Control Center, my screen turned into a complete mess. Removed the drivers and stuff seem to be working fine now.

The latest are the Mobility 5.12 - link to download is posted above. However, dr. had a bit of problems with them, and considering you have nearly the same card as he does (very similar anyway), then you might want to try the Mobility 5.11's. They are stable. DriverHeaven.net has them for D/L.

AlphaQuad1, that is because you need to install the .NET Framework v1.1 to have it work.

I tried out the 5.12's and I was disappointed. Image Quality, in my opinion, went down, images and games looked dull, even with the same color setup I had on the 5.11's.

The 5.11's are brighter and clearer in terms of color.

Also the performance drop is not welcome.

Of course this will vary on most systems and your setup, what happened to me may not happen to you and you might experience a performance increase. Image Quality however was dismal. They also got rid of Control Panel instead of CCC which I HATE. Control Panel is so much better, a strictly no nonsense approach. I hate the stupid graphics and layout of the new CCC. Totally pointless.

The functionality of the Control Panel was PERFECT. Why change it? Everything was accessible and clearly layed out.

Anyhoo', try out the 5.12's and you will see the 5.11's are better for your x700 and maybe other Ati cards as well.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I do have Net Framework installed version 2.0 but the CCC won't run it's stuck on the splash screen. But I went back to the 5.11 and everything is alright :)

I also had issues with the Catalyst Control Center - froze up my notebook every time I opened it, and I had to restart.

I rolled back to the 5.11's, they are very stable. :)

i think the CCC will only work correctly with .net 1.1 i had .net 2.0 and i went back to 1.1 and ccc opened, even though it kind of justs all together, why the hell does it take so long to open!!!!

yes circa86 is correct, as I mentioned before you need .NET framework 1.1 to have CCC running correctly.

.net 2.0 is not an update for .net 1.1 and it is not backwards compatible.

Yes, Microsoft stinks my hairless bum, but what can we do.

.net stinks anyway shampoo, i don't know why people like those slow, memory eating script languages.. i always prefer writing applications in ansi c..
anyway, i've found the 5.12 drivers to be very buggy, for example i wasn't able to over/underclock my x700.. if you are interested read the story here: http://www.thegamebooks.com/x700:-overclocking-incompatability?-t26.html

Some people have trouble running it on Framework 1.1, but I run it on 2.0 just fine without having 1.1 installed.
Secondly, dutty: .NET is not a script language. If you prefer to write in ANSI C, you are using more of a script language, considering ANSI C is sequential, while .NET is object oriented. It runs just as fast as on my computer as any other program, so I have no idea why people call .NET slow. Memory consuming? Not really, CCC uses about 9megs when idle (not loaded, no Task bar icon.)

.NET 2.0 is not 100% backward compatible. Applications written requiring .NET 1.x might not work well. I know. But...

I agree with Waeggles. I have 1.1, and 2.0b installed (job requirement, testing purposes, programming, and for example NHC beta 03 needs 2.0). I have had no issues with CCC in 5.12 (especially liked powerplay modded 5.12, dutty would know that ;) ), but had with ATT ( I use it for heavy overclocking) and 5.12. I also noticed washed out colours (somebody mentioned that as well).
I'm back to 5.11, but I wouldn't say that ALL that trouble was caused because of .NET framework. What do you say about multithreading optimizations in our beloved 5.12? Dual core support? On your notebook? I say there is plenty room for new drivers/CCC to fail performing well on our notebooks .NET framework put aside.

I hate CCC too, I just find it too childish. Give me driver with CP only or ATT at most, I can live with it. But colorful slow aplication that looks attractive...to whom? No thanks. 64 MB disk space (well at least it says so) for installation? No thanks, it is not worth it. Why must I download whole driver with CCC anyway? For desktops you can download only driver (12MB). ATT can handle other settings for example.
Well that is my opinion anyway.

5.11 isn't so bad isn't it? STABLE - that is the word. (not for horses though :D )

At Driverheaven.net, I see that there is a download link for the ATI X700 driver but there are 2 of them that I don't know which one to get.

One has ATI Catalyst 5.11 (classic) and the other one has ATI Catalyst 5.11 (CCC). What is the difference between "classic" and "CCC"?

I have the laptop with the ATI X700 graphic card.

Are Omega drivers better or Catalyst?

    to Vancomycin
CCC is Catalyst Control Center - colourful application that needs .NET framework to run. You can set many things in it (D3D, Opengl, Video...). Some people hate it, some like it. Your choice.

    to MrSquirrel
I used do use Omegas before Ati released mobility Catalyst. Now I use the latter. Some say Omega is better, some Catalyst (in terms of compatibility and speed). I think it is more of a personal preference.

The gap between Omega and the Offical Catalysts in terms of performance has been decreasing with each version being released. I always test both of them, and latest few versions (Since 5.10 or so) they have been pretty much on par. I used to swear by Omega's, but now I always end up using the Official ones.

The thing about Omega drivers is that with the performance "boost" come changes in the IQ (image quality).

Sometimes the IQ is a step above Ati's Catalyst drivers, but at a cost.

Plus IQ really depends on the person. Some might prefer driver sets that make images seem brighter in color intensity and such, some might say otherwise.

I like drivers from the maker of the cards like Ati or Nvidia over third-party drivers. Their optimizations seem to be a placebo.

My advice to you is TRY BOTH.

    Cheers,
    Mike
