I'm still trying to figure out what the best GPU Apple might supply in the up-coming Montevina MacBook Pro is.

I was wondering if anyone knew or could make a good guess as to the Mobility HD 3850s TDP and heat waste etc. Would it be unreasonable to expect such a card in the new MBP?

A lot of people are saying all we'll get is a 9600M, but considering I'm paying $3k for a 17" computer, I feel that a 9600M is quite frankly an insult, but I'm finding it hard to figure out if there are any other possibilities.

Doesn't Apple usually put a mid level card in their notebooks?

Right now the only mid level card they could use better than the current 8600M DDR3 is the 9600M, which is ooooh, what, 5% better?

Some are speculating Apple will have to go with a better card this time around. The new cases will be redesigned so possibly the cooling could be better.

Is the Mobility 3850 even a hot card? Hotter than a 9650M GS?

My friends MacBook Pro "has" an 8800GT, so he told me and I'm not sure I believe that!

Not sure about the 3850, I hear it's not very powerful more midranged, your best bet would be to google some benchmarks and then decide.

The MacBook pros don't have anything better than an 8600M GT with 512mb vram.

If the 3850 is midrange, any chance of it fitting in a MBP?

your friends macbook pro does not have an 8800GT.

apple has always used mid level cards in their notebooks.

Without a redesign, I can only see them moving to a HD3650 or just sticking with the 8600GT.

Not by very much, especially the 8600M GT GDDR3 already in the MBP.

I was just confirming, but to be honest its a shame they charge 2k for a mid level graphics driven rig. For that price an 8800 anything or 8700 sli should be the starter cards. But then again buying an Apple is buying the name and not a price/performance ratio.

Imagine the price/performance ratio when you're buying the $3k 17" with the same card then :(

Have you ever SEEN the MBP chassis? There just isn't ROOM! The thing is rail thin considering the specs and it weighs very little compared to other 15.4 inch notebooks.

I'd LOVE a better GPU in my MBP, but barring some insanely advanced cooling system yet to be disclosed, it just isn't going to happen.

It's thinner than the MacBook in fact.

Yep, Apple's high end, professional notebook is thinner than it's low end consumer one.

    Sense: this makes none.

The difference is the Pro also commands a much better premium. Compared to its counterparts, it's slim and light for its size, making the price premium more worthwhile.

The 13.3 Macbook is heavy and relatively large for its size, you're basically paying for the OS/apple brand name.

And like how Stormeffect said, the MBP runs relatively hot as it is, putting a better card probably wouldn't help matters.

I am guessing that Apple will use an ATI graphics module since it is using the 55nm process and which will run a little cooler than any of the Nvida cards. I am guessing they will use the Mobility 3870. God Bless :)

The 9600M GT which everyone is saying will be in the next MBPs are 65nm, does that mean they will be hotter than the 55nm HD 3850/3870?

I would LOVE a HD 3850/3870, I couldn't be HAPPIER with those cards. Somebody burst my bubble; are they really possible?

It depends but probably, the 8700M GT runs hotter than the 8800M GTX IIRC

    Everyone wants thin and light...

Somehow a darth vader in the ocean comes to mind....no wait thats just Apple charging $2k+ for what you can get for $1k or sometimes less.

Wow... in that case.. Surely the 9600M GT is actually quite a long shot.

Sorry to bump but I'd be really interested to know if the 3850 really should run cooler than the 9600M GT.

I need to make an educated guess on whether or not to wait for the new MBPs as I have only a short time to buy a computer, and it relies now mostly on the GPU.
