Hello everybody :hi2:. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that I have just started a fresh 2013 play-through of modded Morrowind. I'm using a ton of mods, most notably the Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul 3.0, which actually makes this "old" game look up to par with other games released in 2013! Using a bunch of gameplay tweaks as well. The game is a blast so far and I've recorded a few episodes of my gameplay and posted it to Youtube! Subscribe to my channel and follow along as we explore Morrowind together. :D

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwcXWd4ZP2w

Have any of you guys played Morrowind (modded or otherwise)? It really is a fantastic game. Highly recommended!

P.S. I'm playing on an Alienware M17X R4 with the 7970m slightly overclocked (925/1400). Also playing with the fantastic Logitech G700 Gaming Mouse.

By the time you've finished playing all the great mods for Morrowind, and Oblivion, and Skyrim...you'll either be really old or dead. :D

Very true! There's so many. So little time, lol.

Awesome! Glad someone else here played it. It really is an awesome game and playing the modded version is pretty fresh, too.

Heh I got into the Elder Scrolls series in Oblivion and I've been hooked since. That said - I'm waiting for Skywind to finish up before I play Morrowind. I've been waiting sooo long thus far, what's another year or two?

I loved Morrowind, playing Oblivion was quite the let down though, for me it wasn't nearly as good ... Skyrim was nice though .

Great video - which needs mod did you use? Is it a good one?

I've had Morrowind in my Steam library for a while and tried it briefly but haven't taken the time to research which mods to install for a complete playthrough. Not sure if my laptop can handle MGSO with decent frame rate, but I'd like to install some gameplay mods, better textures and perhaps some additional quest mods.

Hi moviemarketing! Thanks for the comment!

Which Needs mod? I believe you are asking me about the "Necessities Of Morrowind" mod. That's the mod that adds the necessary sleep, eating, drinking and fatigue tweaks. Is that what you meant? If so, I think it's great! Just make sure to double the day duration when prompted in the configuration process or else it might become a bit overwhelming with all the eating and sleeping you'll need to do.

Your laptop may be able to handle MGSO 3.0, but not maxed out. I have most settings maxed and I get framerate in the teens sometimes in large cities (I'm using a 7970m). It's not choppy, but it's not 60 FPS smooth, either.

If you check out my Youtube channel there is a video there that shows most of the mods I'm currently using. Some of them may be of interest to you.

Here's a video for all of you to check out. Just a quick one to show off a little view that I just discovered, as well as show some off some rain (I was having problems with invisible rain in my playthrough!). Enjoy!

But in Morrowind, doesn't your character walk so SLOW and there's no fast travel? - Tedious to play then!

I cheated on my character to make him go fast.

Yes, the movement speed is extremely slow, but I find that it makes for a good experience regardless. I personally like the slowed down pace of Morrowind. It's just a slower more methodical experience overall, which is cool!

There is fast travel, via the Mage's Guild, Silt Strider and Mark and Recall spells. I think it's better than flat out fast travel because it's more strategic. You have to plan your courses carefully and use your options wisely!

God I loved Morrowind! It is the first Elder Scrolls game I ever played and what got me so hooked on the series in the first place. I actually discovered the game by accident years ago. It was before I was into PC gaming at all so I played it on my xbox. I was at Gamestop one day looking at the used games and picked up the "Game of the year addition" (includes both expansions) on a whim (and it was cheap) and that pretty much took up my entire life for the next 6 months or so after that..lol. I have literally put over 600+ hours into the game, I have not tried it on PC yet although I easily have another 600+ hours in heavily modded Skyrim.

Where is the best place for mods for Morrowind? Is it still the Nexus? This thread has just re-sparked my interest and I do believe I will now be going to purchase morrowind on steam and start a modded playthrough. Recommended mods?

Thanks for this thread!! I am actually getting very exited to go replay it now :)

P.S. yes, walking is slow at first but once you level up your acrobatics a bit (which is very easy because as long as you are moving and jumping its going up) it starts to move much faster. Just jump everywhere you go and it levels in no time. :) Also, I must agree with OP, while this game doesnt have the traditional fast travel that Oblivion and Skyrim had I really enjoyed the methods of thavel in this game. Once you start learning the levitate, speed, and jump spells you can literally jump over mountain and run/jump/levitate across the entire map in a matter of minutes...so much fun!!! One of my biggest disapointments was when I first discovered that there were no more silk striders in Oblivion..haha

    Nice post, Mike13!

Your first experience with Morrowind is very similar to mine, in fact. My dad purchased the game from a yard sale for $5. He liked RPGs and knew I did as well. We didn't know anything else about the game then. But when we placed that disc in our Xbox and turned it on for the first time, we were completely blown away! Needless to say, Morrowind is still both of ours favorite game all these years later! Just an amazing experience back then, and still is today.

I would recommend using the MGSO 3.0 mod to make the game high resolution and in HD. After that it's up to you what you want to do. I'd also recommend Less Generic NPCs which is AMAZING! It basically gives a large amount of NPCs brand new dialog, quests and that sort of thing. Absolutely phenomenal mod.

Lastly, if you want to check out mods I'm using to get some ideas, check out this video here > Morrowind Mods I'm Using For My "A Trip To (Modded) Morrowind" Play-through - YouTube . It's a 6 minute video showing most of the mods I'm using in my current playthrough of Morrowind on Youtube. If you have any questions about any of them, feel free to ask, either in this thread, or you can leave a comment on Youtube, etc. I'll be happy to help.

And to everyone else, here is a "montage of fail" where I die horribly a bunch of times. It's kind of funny. I actually do succeed after a bunch of attempts when I start making some strategic adjustments. Enjoy! A Trip To (Modded) Morrowind: Part 13 - A Montage Of Fail - Gameplay Commentary - YouTube

Quick question to anyone interested enough to answer it.

Can you look at that video I just posted and tell me if it's "washed out" or "overexposed" on your screen? I've been having issues setting the gamma correctly so it looks good on most screens. On my screen they look great but I would like other opinions please. Thanks!

Give it a go, with the right set of mods Morrowind is surprisingly as addictive as when it was first released. And the fact that there's no way to fast travel and you have to rely on directions makes you feel like a tracker :)

You can also avoid using fast travel in Skyrim, but it's just not the same thing. Morrowind feels more vast, has so much more quests and feels much more like a RPG. You actually have to do quite a few quests in order to reach the guild/house's mastery, not like in Skyrim where in a 8 relatively quick quests you're all of a sudden the archmage. Heck, even Oblivion was better in that regard, where you actually had to break a little sweat in order to advance in your guild.

Regarding the character's walking speed - I agree, it's annoying, that's why I just started a Khajiit warrior in Morrowind because of their speed benefit, and I've having a blast. I forgot how fun this thing was.

Edit: oh, man, I just checked in the wiki - there are 34 different quests in Morrinwd's Mage's Guild alone! 32 in the Fighter's Guild, 30 in the Thieves Guild! Then there are the Blades, Census and Excise, Dark Brotherhood, East Empire Company, Imperial Cult, Imperial Knights, Imperial Legions, Talos Cult, Ashlanders, Camonna Tong, Tribunal Temple, Twin Lamps, 3 great houses and 3 different vampire clans, all with their own respective quests, each one of them at least the size of the quest line in Skyrim's Mages Guild. This thing is massive!

And there's even a table there that shows that completing a quest in one faction or guild can alter the reaction of opposing guilds or factions, accordingly, or improve the reaction of factions that agree with them:
    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Factions

The people who made Skyrim should really be ashamed of themselves when comparing these numbers.

Anyway, I really have some catching up to do :)

to be fair they didnt have to voice all the dialogue in Morrowind... that requires a LOT of time and effort all things considered.

but yea i do agree skyrim feels a bit cut back... its much more Morrowind esque in its design language then oblivion was though. Also i absolutely LOVE some of the dwemer ruins in skyrim.

I understand what you mean, but still, 8 quests from a complete nobody to the frickin' archmage? Really?

And while from those 3 games, I liked Oblivion the least as well, it had a good amount of quests, fully voiced, too.

In Morrowind they also had a minimum skill/attribute requirement to enlist or advance in a certain guild, so you had to actually work for it. In Skyrim I can be a two-handed axe wielding barbarian and still be the archmage in a few easy steps. That's just not right and it cheapens the whole experience, IMO.

Skyrim is awesome, the best of the series when it comes to pure gameplay mechanics, but they are beginning to take steps in the wrong direction in that regard and it worries me.

well it looks like the next big thing will be a MMO so il be curious how that turns out. I'm personally not big on MMOs but the idea of having all of the various previous continents wrapped into one game sounds cool.

The MMO has nothing to do with Bethesda, it is created by ZeniMax Online Studios, a different company altogether, and most of the hands-on previews claim it is dull and uninspired, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

After trying WoW with all of its expansions, the two Guild Wars, Star Wars the Old Republic and Eve Online and hated them all, playing them for a few hours and then never touching them again, I think it is safe to say that I'm not into MMOs and probably never will be, so I'll pass on this boring abomination altogether.

MMO's aren't my cup of tea either, but I absolutely love PlanetSide 2 when it's working, which it isn't half the time, and the other half it's working but with extremely low FPS. The concept is brilliant but the execution is horrible. The game is just utterly broken.

If anyone is interested, I explore some of the mod "Less Generic NPCs" in my latest episodes of my Morrowind playthrough. What does this mean? If you like dialog and lore, you will love this mod. It gives all the NPCs new, interesting things to talk about and discuss, and even starts some new quests. If you're into seeing that sort of thing you might like the newest episodes on my channel. There will also be more action-oriented episodes, it won't be all talking to NPCs, so hopefully I will strike a good balance between the 2.

Enjoy! And let me know what you think of the videos!
