    Heh? That cracked me up.

Well, I am glad I have lived mostly in countries where the legal system is compassionate, humane, and *intelligent* enough to make distinctions within the umbrella context of 'illegal acts', and define and distinguish crimes in terms of their scale and damage to the fabric of society and order.

This is why in the civil world, an illegal immigrant--who has comitted an illegal act--is *NOT* seen in the same light as a rapist or a killer--who has also. . . done something illegal.

Yes, piracy is illegal. Let's rejoice, because thankfully, we don't live in a world where cases are closed on such a redundant, superficial note. We did once; I think we called that time the dark ages. . . or was it the prelude to civilization? Eh. I get the two mixed up.

Anyway, damn those pirates. . . Modern Warefare 2 would've sold 50 million by today had it not been for those scum-sucking, rich, well-off theives. Now the poor game is only topping charts and leading the sales. What a shame.

Seriously though, why do people even bother with this?

    Note:
GTA 4 was a far cry from being a mere port. The PC version is an absolutely different experience to the low-mid setting console counterpart. If only the other ports went that far to scale and take advantage of PC hardware. Of course, GTA 4 had bugs and other issues, which a lot of PC exclusives have as well - this I won't argue. However, one can pick better names when pointing out bad ports. Much better names.

Someone brought up a good point earlier. Why pay for this? I say, why even waste money on a PC? A 'thief' would actually save more money getting a single console and buying the real games without having to worry about drivers or hardware compatibility. Yes, less money being spent! SUPER SERIAL! Of course, this couldn't possibly be the reason why we're getting poor console ports, or why developers and consumers seem to favour the consoles, because even though it makes quite a bit of sense, it completely undermines all that anti-piracy angst in this thread.

I am not what you know of networking but check out tunngle. You set up a lan game and have other players connect to it by setting up a vpn. (using tunngle)

Not really as he makes a good point which the President of Stardock has confirmed. Just because a game is pirated doesn't mean it's a loss sale. Just because someone decided to pirate doesn't mean he or she had full intentions of buying the game in the first place. As Stardock's president said regarding piracy most pirates steal just to steal and would never buy the product even if was 25 cents.

What the previous poster said is along the lines of Stardock's president who said concentrate more on those that intend to buy your product and give them more incentive to buy more. Stardock is famous for free routine updates which enhance the game to it's paying customers.

So while Activision looks at the millions of non paying customers the previous poster makes a valid point. "The game is white hot" regarding sales and will sell millions more whether you factor the pirates or not. ;)

I didnt vote for neither option because no company deserves to be pirated and also IW did this to itself in the first place. IWNET really does fail especally to those who dont live in the US. The main problem is the amount of cheaters in MW2 which is a huge number of them who contiunes to cheat. Come on depending on a single AC system like VAC to ban them is the stupidest thing ever. Without dedicated servers and server admins to ban them they can basically take over and ruins everyone game since VAC takes a very long time to detect a cheater. Btw its easy to pirate MW2 and play multiplayer also but im not gonna to tell you but there is way and btw most of the cheaters on MW2 are the ones who pirated the game so they really have nothing to lose and they can just make new steam accounts again and again and cheat again so its not worth the $60 bucks in my opinion.

Also Dedicated servers + punkbuster + server admins in COD4 = WIN and just based on experience COD4 is hard to pirate because you cant play multiplayer but you can play on cracked servers but they are full of cheaters so i went out to buy the game and loved every single bit of it and so worth the money. The question is why didnt they stick to that same system in MW2 in the first place if they just do that then all of us PC gamers would be happy and btw even console games get pirated as well so why we loyal PC gamers have to suffer, and piracy isnt a big issue as they making it sound

Maybe from a legal or moral standpoint it can be looked at like that, but from a sales standpoint, piracy doesn't impact sales very much. Most people that pirated a game wouldn't buy it if they didn't anyway, besides a few. It's the same the other way around, most pirates will just keep the game they have, besides a few who will buy it. So, piracy doesn't impact sales much, and can actually get the company more sales.

Um, that is exactly what I said in my post. I DON'T assume pirates will buy the game - I was questioning other users that stated that a large percentage of pirates turn around and buy the game, thus helping sales. I don't think that's true.

Again, I agree. But my point is just because you don't have enough money to buy something doesn't mean that stealing, pirating, etc is justified.

    1. Life is about choices - you have a limited amount of money to spend on things so obviously you can't buy everything you want. Not having enough money doesn't justify pirating games.

    2. Companies don't lose money due to illegal downloads. Many of those people have no intention of paying for the game, even if it was impossible to download illegally. If IW spent $100 million on more anti-piracy measures, they would probably not have gotten a return on it.

I don't think anybody was comparing piracy to something as extreme as murder. Of course the law has varying degrees of punishment based on the crime. Anyways, that is a political topic and is therefore prohibited by the forum rules, so please don't bring it up again.

I definitely agree with this statement, but it's not consistent with what you posted earlier. Piracy may not affect sales much, but that still doesn't justify it (or make it legally acceptable).

This is old and not as graphical as "Don't Copy that 2", but gets the point across
about the evils of communism and free software, I meant piracy.

I bought it today after trading it in along with my junk Xbox 360. I think it's awesome on the PC, at least as good if not better because of the keyboard and mouse on the PC.

    @rodknee
Who says the that someone who pirates a game wouldn't buy it if it wasn't possible to illegaly download it. I for example used to spend an average of 40 € every month on movies (like 5 € per movie), since I got an external hard drive and discovered utorrent...that budget is going straight to my Kobaltlaptop savingfund (need 2800€ for one with 2 ghz corei 7 to kick al those alienware owners buts)
I'm just saying, when you want something and there's no other way, then you'll buy it. If there is another free way, it would be contradictory to our selfish psychology not to get it. As the NBR mod said, not having enough money doesn't justify pirating, but it IS a reason why people are downloading illegaly.

can it get an admin to edit the poll, since another admin obviously edited it from the original meaning, can some one replace the first option the "they deserve..." to "They deserve to lose the money" or something like that, in its current state it does not adequately represent the original meaning of the poll.
    Thanks

omg, 4.1 million? didn't they sell 4.6 million on xbox360? so i guess there are still loads of PC gamers around. but then i wonder how many of those 4.1 million is from regions the the game is not released in.

Agreed, punkbuster in my eyes is completely useless, a waste of hard drive space :p even that little file it is!

It just causes grief among the games, and will sometimes kick you mid game for the sake of it xD or tell you to go update....which when you do doesnt work anyway!

And getting it on 7 was a nightmare for me!

And besides, thats what IW get for calling us gamers "a loud minority"

And guys i live in the UK, i cant even play call of duty mw2 on the xbox online, that to me is a rather large waste of money.

the 'free' market works wonders for the real market.

piracy does not only include PC software - you would be astonished by the amount of console piracy.

people don't like developing PC games because it is more difficult to build and maintain. piracy is an excuse. if you have a good product, it will sell...

If you're not on dial-up internet with a locked-down router and ten firewalls, multiplayer works just fine. I'm on a pretty mediocre DSL 256kbps connection, connected via 802.11g wireless on a router at the other end of the house, and I get steady connections in MW2 more often than not.
