Outcry over removal of dedicated server support can't stop latest Call of Duty installment from a faster start than original Modern Warfare.
Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 faced its share of prelaunch controversy. Above and beyond a contentious level in the game's campaign mode, many PC players were particularly peeved with the game's lack of dedicated server support.
While boycotts were threatened and more than 220,000 gamers signed a petition asking developer Infinity Ward to reconsider dedicated servers, sales of the PC edition of the game don't appear to have been affected greatly. In a post on the developer's official forums, community manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling revealed that, "The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in its [sic] first week. Making it the most successful PC version."
The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 is by no means the only one outperforming previous installments. Activision estimated that across platforms, the game brought in $550 million worldwide in its first five days of release, outpacing previous blockbuster games like Grand Theft Auto IV, films like The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, or the book release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I thought this was really funny. Activision managed to come out on top despite all the whining and crying of PC gamers.

That's because the whiners are in the severe minority, we already knew this though...
-
I wouldn't call over 200,000 a severe minority but ok.
-
I'm sure quite a few of those 200,000 got the game anyways. The petition was not a threat to boycott, but a request for IW to add dedicated servers. I signed with the intention of getting game regardless, and I'm sure a lot of others did as well.
The whiners were widespread, but the actual people who boycotted were the "severe minority." -
It is just first week sales. I bet MW1 will still have higher sales in LTD compared to MW2.
-
Yeah, and it's not 'crying' and 'whining' when there's legitimate reason for complaint. Time for me to put on my PC-elitist hat, but Call of Duty as it existed with dedicated servers, was just plain better! Don't want to echo every other thought on the topic, but why make a rub-it-in-your-face thread on this? Annoying. If I'm a whiner than you're a n00b, fair?

You guys who did not stick to your words are noobs.

thats good news. MW2 reinvented video games so they really deserve all that $$. I just like MW2 sooo much. Its such a good game and I love MW2 community even more!! just epic. Epic game. Simply stunning. Better than Windows!!! go buy it!! pay $60 for it!! if not than you re a looser. lol
EDIT:
really, plz go buy it!! support IW. its the only PC developer that listens to PC players. I love how MW2 graphics are just soooo much better than COD1!! its better than what Valve did!! Valve sucks. They dont care about PC gamers!! all they care about is PS3!! I wish HL2 wasnt a port from a PS3 to PC!! thats whats good about IW. They make PC versions especially better, its not like its a port from a console without dedicated servers, right!? -
Your post is one of the ridiculous I have ever read on this website in my almost 5 years of being here. I hope to god you are joking and being sarcastic.
Valve places the PS3 on the backburner, they are one of the few developers that still places a priority on the PC. Infinity Ward is the EXACT opposite of them. Valve doesn't care for the PS3 at all, EA ported The Orange Box to the PS3 and it was a less than stellar port.
Would you like to explain why the PC version for instance didn't get the Hardended and Prestige editions of the game with your claim that Infinity Ward strongly supports the PC? Why dedicated servers were taken away? Why the game retails for $60 when even future PC titles are coming out for $50?
IW didn't add anything extra to the PC version unlike Capcom for instance which adds new features to its games ported to the PC like Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, etc.
Your post is completely wrong. -
