How big is the gap between these two CPUs when it comes to gaming? Is it significant?
Would one feed a 4850 better than the other?

I dont' think you would see any noticable difference between the two. some say the higher l2 cache in the p9500 will be a benefit.
-
For gaming, it's very unlikely that it matters. And since one is around $300 more, that's the answer.

If one is around $300 more, then somebody is making a killing by ripping you off. At xoticpc and similar sites, the cost to upgrade from the P8600 to the P9600 (2.66GHz, better than the P9500 by 133MHz) is only $165. If you're going from the P8600 to the P9500, it should be even less.
As to whether it is worth it... what kind of games do you want to play? Most are currently GPU-bound, but some (like GTA4) require a decent processor and since the console CPUs are far closer to today's high-end CPUs than their GPUs are to today's high-end GPUs, there's a chance that their number will increase. The P9500 has double the cache and 6% more clock speed. Unless you know you're using an application that benefits from a lot of cache, I wouldn't bother unless the price increase is fairly small (i.e. less than 10%). -
I would most likely be playing Cod4 and SC2/Darkfall when they come out.

i'll just say i'm glad i upgraded my stock p8400 to a t9600...but that is a much more significant upgrade...
