Shadow Gate: I've never played any other game that was so boring, and had so many ways to kill you.

Edit: Basewars: Seriously, I don't remember any other baseball game where you could beat up people for getting you out. That game was awesome, I'd still play it if I could find it for an nes emulator.

Baldur's Gate for redefining NPC interactions and... EPIC :)
Company of Heroes for redefining physics in the RTS genre
Dead Space for spicing up the survival horror series.

Every game has roots that can be traced back, so choices should take into account the time the game was created and whether or not it impacted future games in the series.

Homeworld definitely belongs on this list. It is still the only true 3D RTS game out there.

I'm actually posing this one as a question rather than an answer...

Carmageddon? I can't remember any game before it that had the same sort of mechanics...anyone?

Besides that: Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island I know they weren't the first adventure games but god help me if they weren't the funniest

well, if you played Betrayal at Krondor when it was brand new in 1993 like I did (and love RPGs like me...), you'd have thought it was something too. The first RPG i ever played, or saw, that had a real 3D walk around huge outdoor world environment, not just pseudo-3D walking around square by square. Well Ultima Underworld was about a year before, but it wasn't an outside huge world, yet still 3D....

but speaking of that, I'd say Ultima Underworld (1992) should be on the list of original... it plays almost like an old fashion Elder's Scrolls Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion.... 3D RPG where you actually have to swing and hit with weapons and such, not just going off stats and rolls.... for the most part... and was out a few years before the first Elder Scrolls.

They say Wolfenstein 3D popularized first person shoots, as it was probably the first, but 3D RPG hack and slash of Ultima Underworld actually came out a few months before....
