Just curious if there are any games you'd say are highly overrated that typically received accolades from everyone else?
I thought about this because I keep trying to get into Batman Arkham Asylum and not sure what I'm missing, but I just can't get into it. It's kinda neat and all, but just kinda, meh.

All Call of Duty games.
Far Cry 1 and 2.
L4D2.
that's what I can think of off the top of my head. -
Black ops
Black ops
and Black ops. -
call of duty - since 4
Crysis 2
L4d 1 (2nd one was actually good imo)
Far Cry 2: Grand Prix Africa
SC2 -
-
But a few for my list:
SC2 (I know a lot of people are going to hate on me for this one, but SC was my favorite game, and still probably has the most play time of any game for me. The fact that it took 15 years to develop and the way the ruined battle.net made this game just feel average to me. I actually had more fun playing the campaign than multiplayer, which is how it should never be for me personally.)
COD MW2, COD Black OPS
Any poorly optimized console port
Assassins Creed
Supreme commander/ Supreme commander 2
Any GTA game -
Left for Dead 2, didnt play the first one, but the second was total tosh if you ask me.
Modern Warfare 2 was totally overrated as well. Plot was crap, too much unbelievable Hollywood shmuck added to it.
Didn't like the plot to Black Ops either... suffered from the same Hollywood shmaltz as MW2.
I did enjoy W@W and MW1 though.
Myst, never understood all the hype with that game back in the day (was the best selling PC game of all time for a while). Thought it was bloody awful and boring. Much preferred my LucasArts adventure games. -
WOW! I would have spent 100€ in that game. Seriously, it feels so grandious, badbutt, epic... Simply amazing!
Also, I loved the score, because the author wrote the score for Inception, which is full of win -
Assassin Creed games, L4D 1 and 2, and Fallout 3
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
StarCraft 2: It is StarCraft 1 with better graphics. The game gets tedious and so repetitive. It is all just memorizing and spamming metabuilds and micros. I don't that kind of playing style fun. StarCraft 1 was fun cause it was innovative at the time, but SC 2 brought nothing new or unique to the playing field 12 year later.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2: A simple rip-off of MW 2 in the campaign and the MP is so dumbed down, it feels like a CoD 5+ Clone. I only play MP Conquest for the sake of continuing to play the classic Battlefield that I came to know and love (BF2 and before). Everything else about this game is garbage. Vietnam is fun if you find the right servers...
CoD MW2 and Black Ops: Simply bas-arized FPS game series that was made for the console peasants and horribly ported and optimized for the PC market. The gameplay was atrocious and the FPS playing structure was so elementary, no wonder everyone who play those have no social skills or classy behavior when working as a team. It is pathetic. Plus they still overcharge you for the game. No thanks.
Supreme Commander 1/2: Overly hyped but the gameplay for an RTS was dead awful.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Dead boring, ugly graphics, and tedious. This game only survived to today's era thanks to a good modding community. Play it vanilla and you find yourself wanting to do something else other than waste time to keep playing.
However, I do like L4D2 a lot. I find zombie mashing in a parody setting is amusing. However, it does get repetitive and boring if you keep playing it daily and the community can act or have a bunch of 13 year old ingrates that can really infuriate you and cause you to rage so hard that you want to blow up Valve's servers and go insane... -
), but come on. If nothing else I was excited about the campaign and that has become boring and tedious even rather quickly. I was looking forward to a long and engaging campaign. It is long, and after the initial wow factor of the story, ability to buy upgrades and units, etc, it isn't that fun. Just more of the same.

Assassins Creed - Went straight to the bin after 30mins play
Oblivion
Far Cry2
Tom Clancy Hawk
Devil May Cry series
Fear2 - simply can't get into it .. 1st one was brilliant
The Witcher
Bad Company 2
Probably more but can't remember -
It seems like I used to put more time into the older games. I'm not sure if it's because they were just built to be enjoyable for longer periods of time, I had a longer attention span, or if I just didn't have to money for different games. I just know that between SC, D2, and WC3 I've got more play time than all the MMOs I've ever played combined. -
-
1) Halo
2) COD after COD 2
3) Psychonauts and i'm a bug Tim Schafer fan, way back with Grim Fandango and Monkey Island.
4) God of War series -
-
a PS3 game, but Resistance 2. The game is terrible.Period.
-
God of war is something else , best hack n slash i've ever played , considering getting a ps3 just for that -
SC2
Black Ops
Crysis 2 -
I liked playing assassin's creed 2. And L4d2 is boring if you only play levels from easy to advanced. the real fun comes from versus or expert campaigns with your friends (sometimes pubs can also be fun).
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Far Cry 2
Modern Warfare 2
Crysis 2 < #1 Overrated. Console port. Crytek = Sellouts. -
And if you think normal campaign is boring, then stop only playing at Normal difficulties. Try Realism Expert mode.
Also it isn't quite a good comparison if you got killingfloor for $5. L4D2 goes for $4.99 sale quite often.
Anyway back to topic.
Can't think of a specific title now. There are a few games I played fit in the "Most Overrated" category. Usually I just forget the names. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
-
Supreme Commander = 86%
Supreme Commander 2 = 77%
Do you know what overrated means? -

I'd submit Halo as been the most overrated. -
Fallout New Vegas. After 20 hours of play I just got bored and ended up replaying Fallout 3. This isn't to say New Vegas is awful, but it just didn't have the "feel" of Fallout 3. Didn't help that New Vegas was a mess for about a month.(Lag spikes, etc.)
Minesweeper is a joke. No campaign or anything... -
Call of Duty is pretty miserable. I just played Black Ops, and I almost wish I hadn't. I was raging over college rejections so I was okay with it, but then I got pretty sick of just walking around and shooting a ton of enemies who didn't know how to put up a fight. I put it on Hardened, but I don't think Veteran would've been any different. MW2 was basically the same game, with a different story. Everything is still walk around, shoot, walk more, keep shooting, etc. Oh not to mention the graphics look like crap.
-
Black ops, and it's my only CoD title, pretty much means I'll never buy a cod again.
There were probably some old console titles I can't remember now too, but generally my pc games are pretty good.
Winner for most underrated game I have is STALKER soc/pripyat - with the complete mod/patch the game looks better than crysis and most of it is really well done. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
In its defense, BethSoft did have advanced graphics in terms of hardware power goes back then, but how they implemented them on the screen was god awful and by looking at Fallout 3 and New Vegas, it really did not age well at all...
However, that was the least of its issues... -
You guys are gonna hate me for this...
Half Life series...
I just found it very boring as the game would just drag on and on.. Not to mention the silent protagonist. -
I never get HL series. lol -
I think most of you that hate L4D 1/2 fail to realize that this is not a singleplayer game, LOL. You are meant to play with friends online. The game is almost completely a MP game.... how do people not recognize this?
it's like trying to play CSS singleplayer with bots... " oh man this sucks". Yeah no sh*t Sherlock. -

i felt super mario galaxy 2 was overrated. it was fun, but wasn't at all perfect. LOZ twilight princess was also over rated. it was just mediocre. in my opinion, definitely was a step back in the console franchise.
anyways, i feel halo 3 is the most over rated game. it scored mid 9's and wasn't all that great. -
Pretty much anything Bioware makes. Not like the games are bad, but... eh.
Bioshock 1 & 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2
Any game whose story branches into "hundreds of possibilities." Sigh... -
Homefront.
Overrated and overhyped. Finished single player in 3 hours, played 10 minutes of multiplayer, uninstall. -
Halo series for sure, the poster child for generic, cookie cutter, bland console FPS's, and the crowned king of what is wrong with FPS games today. How can the button mashers not tell they are paying for the same game five times? Are they really that blind? Gears of Snore, boring, pointless, completely ludicrous characters, look like some sort of cyberpunk mutant future clowns. A whole game about hiding behind chest high walls? Seriously Epic? Far Cry 2, what they said was coming turned out to not be what we received I will forever regret buying that at release.
-
Hmm...lemme see...
Any CoD after the first one; 2 isn't that bad, 4 and above is overrated, Black Cocks, I mean Ops is the worst
Crysis 2; After finish playing it, uninstalling it, don't bother with it anymore. Its basically CoD: stupid heavy script. There isn't any freedom, just 'Go here through there' crap. Annoying. For the record, I play the first and Warhead at least 5 times on Delta because its so much fun replaying it from different path, and different tactics.
Tom Clancy H.A.W.X; I'm a big fan of Ace Combat series and hoping this will be AC for PC but turns out its a load of crap. Just massive hype -
Chess - the board is way too small and there's only 6 types of units. Support is non-existent - for thousands of years nobody has bothered to fix the exploit where one could do a checkmate in like 3 moves.
-
for me: fallout 3 and oblivion. i know many of you will want to kill me for that. but im a big dude... so bring it. anywho. i just dont get bethesda games. they arent fun for me.
also: far cry 2 and the original crysis
i think i just dont like most open world games. -
Halo. Babby's first FPS.
-
For the PC, the most overrated game would probably be Bioshock for me. Good game, but it wasn't System Shock or System Shock 2. I guess it was rated fine on its own merits, but I was disappointed by the 'spiritual successor' to System Shock. And the fiction just didn't seem to fit. I had a hard time suspending disbelief. -
In my opinion Dragon Age I and II sucked
