Just so you know. The Witcher developers are so fantastic that you dont need to buy a new version of it for the Enhanced Edition. They released the patches to upgrade it to the enhanced version for free!
Im just trying to save you some cash

May I recommend Guild Wars Trilogy. all three games out now on steam! Very affordable :)

Guild Wars is an online action Strategy RPG with a persistent towns and outposts, as well as hardcore balanced pvp, and instanced missions. It touches lightly on some MMO elements but looses many of the boring conventions like grinding, slow lvl pace, long travel times, time sinks(just takes hours to get anything done) and so on.
It also has no monthly fee despite getting regular updates from the developerment team.

It's a fantastic game and I cant recommend it enough. The single-player can either be played alone with NPC companions or with friends should you choose.
Its 4 years old but there are still many players in the game(they just got past 6 million sold).

As for free games that are worth trying: (search google for download links but fileplanet.com , filefront.com and hellsgamer.com has quite a few)

-Americas Army 3 < military made realistic shooter. fun.

    - Dragonica < uber cute 2D side scrolling MMO. This one is polished and very high quality. it feels like a super mario MMO.

    - S4 League < korean funny manga shooter. you play in arenas with others. you make a character and fight like a regular shooter but you can run on walls and all kinds of crazy acrobatics.

If you are looking for a World of Warcraft without subscription there are some games but off somewhat lower quality(being free has it's price) : neosteam and runes of magic and 4 story.

you can upgrade to the enhanced version for free. Go to the witcher site and download the update. the new character voices, updates, lower loading times and much more is really worth it. its a much better game after this patch.

you have to register the game which takes a little bit of time but its well worth it.(registering it means you confirm you have an original bought game and not pirated).

    Prototype.

I started off trying to be all proper, civilized, strategic, and avoid undue attention. That lasted a whole 5 minutes. kickage is the only way to go. :)

COUNTER STRIKE!! If you can't get Counter Strike 1.6, which costs like $10, get Counter Strike Source.
