I'm hoping to get 2 years of decent gaming and all-around performance out of my current notebook (see sig). But I was wondering, what components and specs are going to be important for your future-purchases? (we're talking 2 years from now and beyond)

    Mine must include:

-160GB minimum SSD (NO MORE ROTATING HDs!)
    -LED backlit display
-Mobile Core i7 is still probably going to be the top echelon at that point, so that too.
-Whatever graphics card is the best for a 15" at the time (probably an ATI 6xxx series, the way Nvidia is failing at the moment)
    -Li-Polymer battery?

    Mobile Core i7 cpu
Forget HDD's ofc. SSD's ftw with SATA III interface
Forget about LED backlit and OLED, transparent amorphous oxide semiconductors thin film display ftw
Li-polymer batteries are the evolution of Li-ion ones though not much of improvements unless fuel cell will be used
    ATI 6xxx / Ndivia 4xx with mxm3.0
    DDR4 in 2012
    usb 3.0
    expresscard 2.0
    esata III
    wirelessHD
    802.11n @600mbps
    bluetooth 3.0

    LED, RGB, or AMOLED display
    MXM 3.0 Type B GPU

What I really want is for a laptop to be upgradable for the future, not necessarily have future-proof components. I feel that manufacturers should strive to make laptops as close to the upgradability of desktops as possible, where I can get the new standard of USB, Bluetooth, Expresscard, GPUs, etc. without buying a new PC.

I would be willing to pay extra for upgrading a GPU in a laptop vs. a desktop but not to buy an entirely new computer.

For instance I purchase a desktop replacement laptop and it has a mobile ATI Radeon HD4850 in it. I would like to be able to upgrade it to a mobile HD5850 when they come out.

I want laptops to be more modular, maybe not all laptops, maybe just a few models or DYI kits.

2 years from now the i7 cpu is going to be mainstream, so I wouldn't call that "maximum performance". 2 years changes a lot so we are just going to call out things that might not even come out or even come out earlier, etc.

The 8 core processors will be either recently out, or almost ready to be out in 2 years.

Can "non-invasive" and "neural surgery" be used in the same sentence?

Why has no one mentioned lots and lots of copper.

To be honest, I'd be unrealistic and hope we could get something of mid-range if not beginning high end(note, not maximum) performance in terms of CPU, GPU and still get more than 4h of battery life.

With switchable graphics and those new downclocking CPUs, it could be possible(or not).

I'm with Signal2Noise with his suggestion, unfortunately that belongs in the realm of wildest conjecture and science fiction for the time being.

On the most realistic side, a 15" gaming laptop with a GPU that competes with desktop equivalents would be a good start. A decent i7 CPU and SSD drives with 300GB storage and above would do me nicely.

The end of a seperate CPU and GPU, in other words the one 'chip' that does all the work. For example, GPUs can be used for HD video decoding now and do a better job of it than CPUS. Therefore the move to a CPU, that is more like the currently accepted GPU is likely.
