I am about to purchase the Asus V2s (for portability and mid-range performance), which comes with the 8600 gs. I haven't played games seriously in years, but the last games I remember liking were:

    Knights of the Old Republic
    Half-Life
    Rome: Total War
    Starcraft (back in the day)

Any suggestions for a few must-have games from the past few years that I should get?

    Deus Ex - 1999
    Homeworld - 1999
    Homeworld 2 - 2003
    Call of Duty - 2003
IL2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles (if you like WW2 flightsims)

Deus Ex is incredible. No other way to describe it.

RTS: ive only played Supreme Commander and its fun
    MMORPG: WoW, City of Heroes/Villians

I just updated my comp also and Battlefield 2142 is a lot of fun, i still love Counter-Strike.

Good to see someone with at least half of a brain! Older games have a certain charm to them underneath the not-so-flashy graphics.

They tend to have better stories. And Then there's the entire Adventure genre that barely exists anymore. I still hold that Curse of monkey Island (monkey island III) is the funniest game I've played.
Add Grim Fandango (1998) to that list.

Ha, that's too funny! I thought I was old by putting Starcraft in my list. Though, I still remember playing King's Quest when I was in grade school...

Great list from everyone so far. Now I've just got to pick 2 or 3 of them. I mostly like RTS or FPS games, but I don't need to have the latest and greatest.

Monkey Island 1 and 2 were so ****ing awesome! It sucked that I couldn't play them anymore because we got a new computer with a 3.5" floppy drive and the games were on 5.25" floppy. LOL

    Anyways, Half-Life 2 is a must.

Duke Nukem 3D =. It is still a amazing experience! Dont Forget Dark Reign! I think that game was better and more balanced than starcraft. SC2 will be better though =)

I doubt it. Duke Nukem 3D >>>>> Crysis. DN3D was something completely new: you could interact with lots more than earlier, you could move in more directions (up), you could blow up oh so many things. What will crysis bring that's bleeding edge? DX10? They won't be the first...

I dunno...the real time weapons mod looks really sweet! But Duke Nukem Forever is gonna have a lot of pressure living up to its predecessor. Its going to be competing against games like Crysis 2 and Farcry 2.

3DRealms are planning the sequel of Duke Nukem forever. But honestly, I think people will be waiting forever for "forever". It's gonna be released when PS5 or PS6 is released. At the earliest.

I wasn't saying Crysis will be as evolutionary as DN 3D was, just that people will be saying the same thing about the requirements way back when...

Did anyone here play Stunts? It was an application that ran in DOS. It was a car racing game by Broderbund published in 1990, the year in which I was born. I think it's safe to say it was the first video game I've ever played. I loved it then and just recently downloaded it and installed it. I still love it now.

But yeah, I played it all the time when I was a kid. Real fun.

    HELLO KITTY!

I'd say get The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion for that matter. Get Morrowind GOTY and wait for Oblivion GOTY and you'll be set with hours and hours of gameplay.

    Doom 3 and Quake 4.

But in my opinion you already have the only game you'll ever need. Starcraft :).

I know this will be blasphemous to many of you, and likely get me flamed, but I never liked Starcraft. It just wasn't fun. I much prefer Warcraft II or Warcraft III. And I definitly prefer the Heroes of might and magic series,

I can understand that, as Starcraft takes alot of thinking, especially online.

But none the less, to each his own!

Personally Starcraft and Half-Life in my opinion are the two best games ever made. Simply because it kept me playing it no matter what. Theres so many damn good games out there but i always end up still playing either starcraft of a half life based mod.

    Consistency.

I agree with Komosomol. I classify a good game as entertaining until you finish it but a great game is a game that you play even after you've finished it. Starcraft and Diablo II kept me playing like a MAD MAN!
