Come on, I know 3dmark06 is just a benchmark but those low numbers gotta mean something, right?

9700M GT and 180.43 (latest) drivers

If you were running the demo version and didn't change any options, it looks like you have an issue with your drivers underclocking during intensive use (possibly a heat issue) or you had something in the background interfering. Try restarting your computer, checking the task manager for 5 minutes then start the bench again. Good luck

Are you in power saving mode? Download GPUz or rivatuner and check the monitor to make sure clocks are optimal. A 9700 GT should be getting 6k+

    Nope, High Performance.

The only things in the background were a paused Dreamscene, two firefox tabs and avast.

My GPU is idle at 50 degrees celsius....

    Try reinstalling your driver.

But umm, does the performance of your GPU falter? If not, then there really isn't much relevance to the 3dmark score and you shouldn't really worry too much.

3dmark score is just a rough benchmark for cards, but actual performance tests are far more conclusive. If the GPU performs as it should, then this is most likely just a driver issue and not due to the GPU.

Here, i downloaded 177.79, disabled every possible process until I was only using 1GB of RAM and i re-ran it.

Its good, but not on-par with the G50V with T9400 and 9700M GT..

    Oh well.

There is no DDR2 version of the 9700M GT. They are all 512MB GDDR3.

I dunno, they highest I've ever got is 5680.

That was with stock drivers too.

well, lots of laptops have 9600M cards and their scores can vary from 4000 to 5800.

The 180.43 drivers are supposed to be optimized for DX10. I haven't noticed any FPS drops in DX9 games myself, but it is possible that this driver just doesn't fly well with 3dmark06 as that is DX9, no? So, I wouldn't be worried about it actually. Since you've gotten' higher before this is probably the case.

i'm using DOX's 180.43 driver and have achieved higher 3DMark06 scores than any other driver i've tried. so i don't think it is driver incompatibility with 3DMark. have you oc'd you gpu too much perhaps? but in any case drivers usually aren't to make benchmarks faster, they are to make actual games and software run smoother. so if games are running great i wouldn't worry about it.
