So my 6800go finally died after 4 years of honorable service in my Asus Z81. Problem is Asus doesn't offer it anymore and I can't find it anywhere.
Part # I need is NV42M MXM Type-3
The only other part # I am finding out there is the NV41M MXM Type-3, which I think they may have called the Ultra.
So, will the NV41M work in place of my NV42M?? They look similar to me, unless the pics I am seeing are generic.
And save all your "just get a new laptop" posts, my Z81 is family, I love this rig and the 6800 works just fine for me, and should be cheap to replace if I can just find one.
Thanks in advance.![]()

I realize you really like this laptop, but this card, which would indeed have to be the 6800 Ultra, could be atleast $400 because it is rare and is not made anymore. Try ebay, but honestly, I think you would be better offer investing that $400 into a new laptop, it would be cheaper in the long run.
Im not really a pro when it comes to MXM, but there might be newer cards, like the 8600m GT which would be almost equal, that could work, or a 7950GTX, something along those lines.
edit:
quick ebay search found me this, with the same part number as the one in your asus, for only $50. I bought the X7800 for my laptop from that exact store, and highly recommend it. It is refurbed, but is only $50, so its not a huge investment.
2nd edit!: after looking at it more i think that is just the chipset, and not the whole card. ask on ebay if your interested. -
Well, you could use this time to experiment a little seeing that your card is MXM-III. If you enter Alienware M9700 or M9750 on ebay, you should see some MXM-III versions of the nVidia GeForce 7900 GS and the 7950 GTX. Physically it should fit, but I don't know if it will post anything. This beats looking for a rare archaic GPU worth $400. There's also the ATi Mobility Radeon 3870, which is more powerful than the 7900GS or the GTX and also DirectX 10.1 capable, but it's not up on ebay yet. It should be soon though...

Dang, that card can cost $400 bucks?!
I thought with it being an older technology card it would be cheap. Now, I haven't found the NV42M I need, but I DID find this NV41M Here for $149.00. Its made for the Alienware m5700.

So thats why I need to know if I can use the NV41M in place of the NV42M that I need. Because if it will work for sure, than I don't think $149 is too bad.... -
Well, according to MXM Upgrade they have successfully upgraded the 6800 to the Mobility x1800. Its a direct fit for MXM type-III. Appears to be about a 35% upgrade in speed/power. Anyone have any experience with this card?

Would the mobo accept the new card?
-
Good question, according to MXM Upgrade they performed the swap, but I don't know if they needed any modifications or not. Both the 6800 and the x1800 appear to be MXM type-III cards, so I'm thinking it should snap right into the PCI-E slot and then screw down?? I hope?? This may be my only savior, lol.
-
well try it out, in theory it should work
-
I'm gonna try it, looks like its my only option and if it works then I get a little bit better card. I just hope going to a faster card doesn't make it too hot inside my 15.4". I willing to bet that x1800 is made for a larger, like 17" rigs.

if i remember correctly, the X1800 was in the old macbook pros which have pretty bad cooling
