Here is my Benchmark test of GTA IV on my computer... If you look at Video memory usage it is 99%... What is the problem here? Should I overclock my GPU? Or try an unofficial-optimized driver?
    I use 179.48 official...

    Average FPS: 29.11
    Duration: 37.40 sec
    CPU Usage: 92%

    Render Quality: Highest
    Reflection Resolution: Very High
    Water Quality: Very High
    Shadow Quality: Very High
    View Distance: 24
    Detail Distance: 100
    Definition: Off
    VSync: Off

As far as i know Video Memory usage is related to resolution and texture quality (maybe other things as well i know in LED for example if you set Triple Buffering for VSync it says it requires more memory). Anyway overclocking will not help only reducing the resolution and/or other IQ settings

A driver won't change how much memory your card has, or how much the game needs. It is what it is.

You should still try out one of the 180 series drivers though.

    Thanks I try one out...

    EDIT:
I get 29.28 with same settings... Optimized driver doesn't help at all ;)...
    I stay with official 179.48

I use the DOX 185.85 driver on my card, and I must say I am really impressed with it's performance on the games I played so far, give it a try...

It's at 99% because those settings require 928 MB of memory and you have 1 GB. I know that's only 93%, but it's never exact anyway. The PC port of GTA 4 has many detractors for many reasons, but the one reason I fault it most for is the amount of VRAM it requires. It's not going to change, so if you aren't happy with framerates, drop a setting. Personally, I think it still looks great at medium texture quality, which free up a LOT of memory... plus you can go ahead and bump up to native res (if you aren't already there).

If you don't experience missing textures or other graphic related abnormalities, I wouldn't worry about it.

However, you will gain performance with only a little less eye candy if you change some of those Highest and Very High settings, to High. Those are the settings that are taking up so much more GPU memory too.

Even high end desktops, I would never recommend setting detail distance at 100, you won't notice too much if you set that to a lot lower and you will gain performance.

The fps you get in game is always lower than the benchmark too.

You should try Try Dox optimised 180.84, no other drivers give me such good performance in GTA IV (+10fps) but of course, it might be different for you.

You guys are trying to help him with a problem that doesn't exist.

When you run a game, your video card is going to run at max capacity in order to improve performance.

I.e. when you play an old game like Counter-Strike, your FPS is like 500. That's because your vid card will always work to its max potential.

Guys, 99% is where it should be at. If it were 80% or something then you might have a problem.

Your fps is better than mine. I'm running at 18.75 fps. My laptop has an Nvidia 9600M GT. I set my settings down pretty low to help raise my fps. To me it still looks good on low settings. Have you updated your driver? I updated mine and it raise my fps a little. I'm just grateful I can play this game.

True, about the CS thing. But that's not the issue.

Running counter-strike on a good GPU will get high FPS, but your video memory usage still wouldn't be very high. CS's texture's aren't at a very high resolution and won't use much of the memory.

    lol man I just remembered

Did you play the console version? I got the PS3 version and believe me from what I've seen you should be very happy with your FPS in GTA IV...

When it comes to benchmarks we seem to forget the core idea of games: playability

Yes I have played it on Xbox 360 and must agree there. PC version is much better if your system can handle it. :D
