Is actually an older game. I've been playing "The Suffering" and it's supplanted Doom 3 as the scariest, creepiest game I've ever played. The graphics are most definitely not up to par with today's standards, but the setting, storyline, monsters, and overall gruesome nature of this game really grabs you by the throat. If you're looking for something a little different in an FPS, you oughtta give "The Suffering" a try. The sequel is coming out, later this year, so the fright is just gonna get worse.

I've played The Suffereing, pretty creepy. You may also want to try "Fear". It's a new game being released. Tried the demo and it's pretty creepy as well, especially when a shadow passes by and you waste a round because you're jumpy.

The demo to F.E.A.R. is well worth the download. The visual effects are amazing and it is quite creepy!

    Hi

    I too also recommend F.E.A.R

Where Doom 3 provided ample opportunities to jump out of your skin, F.E.A.R provides an altogether more malevolent and uneasy atmosphere. Not one to be easily unsettled, F.E.A.R does a pretty good job of geting the old ticker racing, especially walking down that corridor with the blood ceiling...

I agree on F.E.A.R. Honestly, I was disappointed by how "scary" Doom3 was - it's scares relied on the fact that you couldn't ever see a friggin' thing. Cheap scares like you get in movies. As Jim said - the atmosphere is what's unsettling in F.E.A.R. It's good.

A buddy who just played the demo said it reminded him of the Suffering, so there's a double recommendation. :)

Am I the only one that wasn't impressed by the F.E.A.R. demo? As someone who liked Doom 3's atmosphere I'm sure it's going to be a "wtf" moment when I say...I thought F.E.A.R. was really lacking in actual creativity. Even the title grates on me. As someone who watches a LOT of horror films (particularly Asian ones), F.E.A.R. struck me as an amalgam of horror cliches coupled with Soldier of Fortune II.

I've been becoming of the opinion that there's a real dearth of imagination in shooters as of late and I have yet to be really impressed by anything released since Unreal Tournament 2004.

I tried the F.E.A.R. demo, but was kinda disappointed by it. It felt more like a standard combat game than something unique with a supernatural twist. Of course, it was only a demo. I think it was intended more to show off elements of the game's A.I. and hi-end graphics rather than focus on the scary aspects of the game. The only creepy part was the end where you walked back and forth through that hallway with the blood-stained walls and that little girl walking on the ceiling. I still have high hopes for F.E.A.R., but the demo just didn't "hook" me like I thought it might.

I agree, Pulp. F.E.A.R.'s concept is not creative, nor is Doom 3's or most anything out recently. That aside, I was very impressed with the attention to detail in both models, environments and animations. The atmosphere worked for me better than Doom 3s.

Slightly off-topic, the most creative shooter that I've played recently was Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. Good fun in that game, but I don't believe it's on the PC at this point.

Until console shooters standardize using keyboard and mouse, I'm never going to be able to believe in the idea of shooters on the console. I still remember playing Halo PC and thinking "this is the best you can do on a console? Are you serious?"

As for the atmosphere in F.E.A.R., I just couldn't get into it. Part of it because its performance was miserable on the X600, and part of it because the environment was just too generic.

Blood on the ceiling was a nice touch, though.

I don't care much for FPS games on consoles either, but Oddworld was a little different. Maybe it was just more giving in its control or just wacky enough in the weapons that I didn't mind it so much. It's the only one I've played with much satisfaction.

Performance on the FEAR demo does suck terribly. Running on my desktop with an X800XL looked very good, but I still had to turn off a lot of performance options that I don't normally need to. Beautifully destructible environments. It's nice, after a firefight, to see all the chunks missing from the walls, rather than basic sprites.

F.E.A.R. is sweet. I really like the action. It is really raw and unpolished, which is why it seems so realistic at times. I watched a demo of this game last year, and it was pretty creepy back then. Especially the weird scene with that little kid. Just seemed odd to me.

The concept is pretty cool too. Like the x-files with bigger guns and more blood.

I bet Fear will be pretty good. i mean, it may not, bt until you all p;lay it, be nice, it could be the scariest game ever, and it may not. Alot depends on how the player views it. I know alot of people that played doom 3 and were trying to not enjoy it so they didnt and now say it isnt scary, but it is scary, maybe not for the whole 24 hours, but it was. So, there it is. Here is hoping Fear is very scary

I bought the gold pack for half life 2 looking forward to a really great game (and it is) but I still haven't finished it... Infact i haven't played it for nearly a year (I've been playing CS:S) mostly because I scared myself reading about all the scary crap you have to go through in the Ravenholm level...

I hate zombies... I hate the idea of things biting me... I hate big spiders... I hate things that look like they died but then come back to life to stab you in the back (aka zombies again)...

It makes me feel like I haven't gotten the whole of the game... but I don't think I really have to (i read the strat guide like 5 times *i was banned from playing the game until i finished my college applications, but by the time that happened I had gotten over my COMPLETE AND UTTER OBSESSION with the game... so I have stopped...

Maybe I should cheat and level skip to get to the last few street and tower fighting points of the game...

Man talking about this is getting me creeped out again... I can watch movies like Kill Bill *except for the cutting of the achillies tendon part and the foot squashing the eyeball part... two more of my phobias* but things where there is a ton of suspence just about kill me...
