I find this forum very useful but I've run in to a problem I can't seem to fix.
I have an HP dv6-3131tx laptop, when I first got it (2011ish), my gaming performance was really good, a stable 60fps each game I played. Lately, I've been experiencing pretty poor gaming performance.
Eg. Fifa 13
I get 60fps but I slowly drop down to 30fps which is barely playable.
I've overclocked my GPU to 600/750 and I still experience really bad FPS, I've tried every other 'method' but I can't fix my problem.
Bear in mind, I have switchable graphics, Intel Graphics + ATI Radeon HD 5650.
Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.![]()

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Could be a number of reasons - wrong graphics card, lappy is on energy saving plan, too much dust -> overheat, etc.
What have you attempted doing so far? -
My battery power plan is on High Performance and my laptop never overheats, but does get quite hot. I do have a cooling pad so it is quite odd how it gets that hot. I have checked that my laptop fan speed is only at 30% and came to the conclusion that it is meant to be at that speed, correct me if I'm wrong.
All I've done is overclock my GPU as well downloading the 13.3 Catalyst Driver from leshcatlabs.net. It could be the wrong driver because I'm clueless about which one to install, if this is the case, please send me the link for the correct driver.
Thanks for the reply

Right now I go with overheating as said above. The cause? Well that is the question. As said dust is a good place to start. Are fans working? Has Thermal Compound broke down? GPU could be failing. DeLL and HP had that issue in the past. Two materials did not expand/contract nicely and created micro cracks. I just had an Asus G73 GPU fail I suspect this.
So install an app to monitor GPU temps, run the game once it starts to slow down see what temps were. -

Uhmmm, if you don't know which driver to DL, why do you overclock?
It could still be dust. Even if you have a cooling pad, dust inside your lappy could clog the openings making it harder to cool your lappy. -
and your cpu/gpu temperatures are????
when was the last time you cleaned your fans and vents out??? -
I've just tested it, it was around 70C before hand but rose to 90C when it started getting laggy. Because of these temperatures, I turned off my laptop and cleaned the vents using a pump it found as I don't have a can of air in the house. Yet to test it after cleaning out the vents, so I will post my temperatures next.

Get a can of pressurized air, get some high quality thermal interface (Let's say Prolimatech PK series).
Open it up, clean it following available internet instructions for bare die cleaning, apply new TIM, blow the vents/coolers with the compressed air, reassemble, enjoy your "like-new" performance.
If the fan doesn't spin, get a new one.
Pretty much it. -
I don't think I can access my fan. Even if I unscrew all the screws at the bottom of my laptop. :/
EDIT: My laptop fan is louder than before, is that a good sign? -
Cleaner fans produce a bit louder noise from what I know. Just try it. Also, if your problem hasn't gone away, try stock-clocking your GPU and see if it happens. When my GPU crashed with an overclock, it'd run at around 1/2 to 1/3 of stock clocks until I restarted my PC. AMD cards obviously behave differently, but it's something to try.

Alright thanks, I'll try stock clocking my GPU.
