My friends:
Dell E1705 Inspiron
2GB of RAM
Vista 32 bit
Intel C2D 2.16GHz
100GB HD
Nvidia 7900GS or GT?
Resolution 1440 by 900
Mine:
Sager N2090
4GB of RAM
Vista 64 bit
Intel C2D 2.4GHz
160HD
Nvidia 8600GT
Resolution: 1650 by 1050
I guess what this really comes down to is the video card and resolution. Both are good computers but when it comes to performance which one is it? Is the 8600 better even with the higher resolution? Also the more RAM does make a difference I believe.

The 8600GT comes very close to the 7900GS in terms of power, overall, I would say your computer has a slight edge, a very slight edge.
-
8600 GT pwns the crap out of the 7900gs. maybe not in 3dmark but in real life situations it does.
-
Yeah, yours is a slight bit better, mainly because of the RAM. But you also have the DX10 hardware card. Either way, they are both good computers. And your friend would have a 7900GS by the way.
-
-
Seriously the 8600GT is a midrange card that's close but won't pwn the 7900. Maybe when we get some DX10 going but right now it won't be pwning anything.
Your laptop has a faster Proc and more RAM. Your's has the edge. -
If your a gamer maybe his, if a GT yes, yours is next Gen but you have a 600 series he has a 900 series. But overall yours is a better computer IMO. Also you might be able to upgrade later and really kick his a**. It is really hard having the best computer on the planet ( and very expensive) I stopped 5 years ago, I just could not keep up.
-
Yeah hopefully I could upgrade the 8600 when things change. I've heard people say stuff all over the charts about if the 8600 is better than the 7900. Mostly I hear that the 8600 kicks butt and is considered a high performance card.

LBThorn here is a link to the best comparison site on the Web!

I know people bash benchmarks and I understand that, but it is all we have sometimes. If he has GS you guys are neck and neck, I bet on some games you are better some him. I would take yours at this point in time over his! -
-
yours is better cuz he has a dell.
-
Anyways, in terms of raw power I'd say that your friend has you beat by a couple hundred points in 3DMark06. I say this because both your bottlenecks is most likely your video card. I don't think having more than 2 gig's of ram and any processor over a t7300/7200 (for the 4 MB of cache) really helps you out too much but it definitely doesn't hurt. You didn't list how fast the hdd's are which could have an effect on load times.
However, you have the advantage of having a DX10 card and your laptop is smaller (15.4 inch vs. 17 inch) with a higher res screen. I think having a 64 bit OS kinda hurts you though (compatibility issues with drivers, software, etc.)...
Still they're both nice laptops, but yours is more "future-proof" while sacrificing very little in comparison. -
-
Exactly! I don't know why people make a sole decision based on the site. It's way of on some cards. -
In real life gaming the Go 7900GS = 8600M GT, you cannot compare the NB8P against the G71M in 3DMark, both are completely different processors and the NB8x is optimized for 3DMark. I'd say you have the slight edge because of RAM and processor.... but only slight, could be canceled out if you have a 5400RPM HDD and him a 7200RPM HDD. You have the slight edge with the 8600M GT for future games (OpenGL 2.1, Direct3D 10) -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
lol. people always say the 8 series is optimized for 3dmark.
its not like the 7 series isn't. its just that the 8 series is putting out more 3dmarks.
forever i tell people to take 3dmark scores with a grain of salt, at most.
measuring 3dmarks across generations of tech? for shame!
don't say the 8 series is better than the 7 series BECAUSE of 3dmarks! prove it with real benchmarks!
don't say the 8 series inflates 3dmark scores! they are only meant for comparison within individual gen's of tech!! -

With a slight overclock of your 8600GT it can be equal to the 7900GS and even more powerful.
Of course you must accept the risks associated with overclocking. -
You have a 15" computer, he has a 17" brick. You got the edge
-
-
Actually, stock 7900GS is still faster than the 8600M GT DDR3. The 8600M actually got owned by the 7900GS in real life benchies than in 3dmark. But i do expect it to change in the future coz programmers will program it to suit stream proccessing of the new cards.
-
the only time the 7900 GS will win is when the game is set on higher resolutions
*seems like everyone has the 8600GT.... doesnt make it special anymore lol -

The 7900GS in a Dell clocked 300 more points in 3dmark06 than the 8600M GT in my Zepto review machine. Also Notebookcheck lists the 7900GS at 200-300 3dmarks higher than an 8600M GT. Notebookcheck may not be very reliable but it's figures on this match the real life benches set my NBR reviews.
There is no way an 8600M GT 'pwns' a 7900GS, not by a long shot. About the same maybe. Also as your 8600M GT is outputting to a higher res screen the 7900GS will beat you easily on fps.
As your cpu is a bit faster you might win, but performance also depends on the speed of both hard disks. 7200 or 5400, and who made them? For example Seagate destroys Fujitsu in benches.
4GB ram wins over 2GB in the latest games but anything pre- BF2 it won't really make any difference.
Why not try both running 3dmark06 after a fresh boot? Also try comparing max and min fps at identical settings in a game such as BF2142 or Oblivion. Anything other than real life tests is largely speculation, because two identically specced laptops made by different companies can perform very differently. -
Its a GS, Dell doesnt put in the 7900GT's, you would have to get the 7950GTX, with the XPS M1710.
My friends comp vs. Mine
