Ok so its not just the wolves. It happens with deer and occasionally rats. Whenever one is near I get significant frame lag. I am able to handle combat with humanoids just fine. I my FPS was fine in the sewers or whatever their called and its fine when I'm just walking around outside. But then my FPS will drop into the teens and I'll look behind me and there will be a wolf. My specs are
Compal HEL-80
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ghz
2gb Corsair ram
Nvidia 7600 go at 350/350 (stock underclocking)
I have turned all my settings pretty much all the way down and am playing at 1200X800. I have updated drivers to the latest versions. I am willing to bump up the clocks on my graphics card if I have to. I heard that Oblivion partially supported multi-threading, how would I go about turning this on?
Thanks for the help

I suggest you do a quick search through the Oblivion thread we have going here. You can search for "wolves" in the thread itself. I have seen some settings and patches that can be applied to help with these issues. I'm sorry I don't know more but I don't play Oblivion.
Here's the Oblivion thread:

Well I searched around and found some interesting threads. One led me to role back my drivers to 91.31 or somewhere around in there. Another let me to turn the number of frames rendered ahead down to 0 in coolbits. I saw no effect from either of these tweaks. Just for drill I turned everything down as low as it could go. 640X480 small textures lowest possible view distances and the like. I was getting 60-70 fps (lol) but as soo as I got near one of those @#$% deer I was back down around 7fps! I was dumbfounded. I will continue to look for a fix but if anyone has any suggestions please don't hesitate to post them.

its becasue you laptop doesn't have hardware sound, even on my laptop with top specs it happens to me! its really annoying, but i think the only way to fix it is to get a sound card.
-
it doesnt requires as much GPU power and yet gives you a good visual quality -
with a 7600, even underclocked , he should be able to play without going oldblivion
your problem is dumbfounding.
maybe you should try re installing? -
I'll back up my saves and reinstall tomorrow. For now I have put a cap on my view distance which nets me an average of 30 FPS which is fine. It still drops into the single digits when I get close to a deer though. My soultion for this is the immediate extermination of all wildlife. When my fps starts to drop I know one is nearby and I quickly remove it from long range.
Even though you say I shouldn't have to, I'm going to look into oldblivion and see what its all about. Thanks for the help.

I know I read a fix in that Oblivion thread though, so in your spare time, you may want to open the thread and then "search this thread" for wolf.
Here's the post I was talking about; didn't take very much effort to find:

I'm sure too it's the sound which causes that effect. tomorrow i'll have some time to give you the instructions what to do
-
Before you try out the fix and go about disabling sounds and editing ini files, turn off the in game sound first and see if you have the problem still. Hopefully Oblivion doesn't try to load the sound files if you turn sound off, but then again Bethesda isn't known for efficient coding.

I turned the sound off but I don't think it had any effect. GG bethesda. I am now using oldblivion until I can find that quiet footsteps mod and see if it has any effect.

Wow... sorry for double post. Delete please...

I hate to be crazy, but... Try a texture replacement.
I'm serious, use Qarls Texture replacement 2.0 (Just don't add parallax mapping), it can also replace the wolves texture... -

If you're using the Adrenaline Oblivion mod then that might explain why you're getting severe framerate drops when wildlife is nearby. If you're not using it, then don't install it, it'll make your problem worse-probably.
My new laptop hates the wolves in oblivion?
