Greetings my fellow NBR members and fellow gamers.
I want to personally invite you join, and enjoy a new Mumble server that I have created exclusively for the NBR community.
What is Mumble?
Mumble is a alternative VoIP service just like TeamSpeak and Ventrillo. However when directly comparing these three it is vastly superior in latency and quality, and has many great features to make it more useful.
Here is a youtube video demonstrating the latency difference between these 3 applications. I think the newest version of Mumble maybe even faster than demonstrated here!
This allows real time talking between us and makes things more natural and fluid.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qMfF36NvoJc?fs=1&hl=en_US&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="385" width='480'>
Intended Use
I would like toallow everybody to use the server for both gaming and socializing. I just ask that things be kept respectful I feel the NBR community is good at this do don't make me eat my words!
Use the proper channel for the proper thing.
Getting Mumble
Download the newest 1.2.3 client and install it from here: Mumble
Joining Mumble
Once you have installed the client you can easily join the server by placing this link below in your internet browser or clicking this link.
mumble://nbrchat.servebeer.com/?version=1.2.3
Once you have joined be sure to go into your server tab and add to your favorites.
The server is publicly listed and to prevent random people from joining it is password protected. To get the password simply PM me here on the forums and ask me for the password.
This is my way of keeping track of interest in the server and keeping it clean.
Yes - You may share the server with friends however please police yourselves and let them know they are your guest and not to use the server freely on there own or invite any of there own friends so do not invite people you do not trust 100% to follow these rules.
Important Things to Know (setup steps)
1.) Use the Audio Wizard to setup your speakers & microphone when you first use the client. You can always run it again if needed by looking under the settings tab.
2.) Try to use headphones when possible to prevent speakers from sending reverb into your microphone.
3.) If you are not using headphones, use of Push to Talk key is strongly encouraged. If I hear reverb from your speakers I will mute you until you use push to talk!
4.) Push to talk is good in all situations even when using headphones so you can prevent people from hearing you when you don't want them too (people yelling in background, coughing, etc)
5.) The preset for Medium audio quality is fine and still way better than TS3 or Ventrillo
Cool Things to Know (Awesome Mumble Features)
1.) It has an in-game overlay that shows you who is in your channel and highlights them when they speak so you always know who is talking.
2.) You can configure the overlay in many many ways, from size to position, and even turn it off, or a favorite of mine have it only show people when they talk instead of everybody in the channel.
3.) It supports positional audio for many games. When somebody talks you hear it in your headphones/speakers in direct correlation to there in game position. So if in game they are to your left you would hear it in your left speaker.
4.) It has build in noise filtering, this is one of the main reasons it sounds way better than Ventrillo and TeamSpeak.
5.) It has voice detection so when not using push to talk it knows what is voice and what is noise much better than other programs.
6.) It has Text to Speech for the chat, so what ever is typed in chat is read to speech for you.
7.) You can record conversations with others if you wish on the new 1.2.3PR client version.
8.) It can attenuate the game sounds/music when people speak so you can hear them more clearly (lower the volume of the game)
9.) It is a skin-able interface if you wish.
10.) It supports Avatars and Comments. Avatars show up on the in-game overlay(Id use your NBR Avatar)
11.) +More
So as you can see I am very excited about this. I hope it works out smoothly and we use it properly.
I am very much encouraging those of you who play with me for SC2 Game night and other people in the NBR Steam Gaming Community to make use of it.
Join the NBR Steam Gaming Community Below and be in instant touch with all your other NBR friends. Steam makes a great pre-interface for Mumble.
See a few people online, ask if they want to join, and then go join the Mumble server together and go game!
Steam Community :: Group :: Notebook Review
If you have questions, comments, concerns, suggestions. Feel free to PM me.
The server is in testing phase right now and I am using the 1.2.3PR version so if you find bugs/problems be sure to let me know.

Come over or I'll eat you guys >:[
Tested it with Vicious and yes, it's a really good alternative to teamspeak and ventrilo. Just be sure to throw all your rubbish at Vicious's admin cave and we're all good -
I've used TeamSpeak 2 and 3 for quite some time, and quite a bit of vent as well, and have to say that mumble is worlds better than those.
Quick and easy to setup and bam, I was talking to vicious even though I didn't intend to, but it managed my laptop speakers and headphones from the getgo without any feedback.
Granted he got to hear my two little guys rumbling in the background, but with a little tuning I'm sure I can get it to work without picking up all that. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I want to get in on this. Tossed you a PM, Vicious.
-
I see a forge in mumble! O_O

Glad to see you took my advice ^__^
I'm in class right now, but I'll swing by the server when I get home later. -
Thanks for offering the VOIP

Added a few more game channels, and also added more directories.
Now instead of just a single generic chat channel for a game say Team Fortress 2. Every game now has at least one sub channel called "Freelance Team" this is the channel you would join to talk to your team in game.
So keep in mind when you double click on a main channel you join the main channel not the sub channel within it.
The main channel can be used incase more than one group is playing the same game or like a planning room before you go off onto a team.
Other games like Starcraft 2 have more sub channels. I have NBR SC2 Game Night and inside there is "Team A" and "Team B" this way when we do our 3v3 or 4v4 all NBR member games on Friday nights we can talk to our own team and not be talking to the opposing team.
This may be a bit more competitive than it needs to be, but I wanted the option to be there. -
oh wow this is awesome.
Thanks vicious -

Hey guys,
I have a great new idea for you to make use of in Mumble.
Scene had his steam ID profile link as his comment in Mumble, it auto generates a url.
I saw this and now I am doing it myself, this is a really great way to share your Steam ID with other Mumble users and allow them to add you as a friend.
Also do not forget you can set Avatars in Mumble.
I'd recommend using your NBR name & Avatar so everybody knows who you are!
BTW tonight is SC2 Gaming Night, see you in Mumble. Get it installed if you do not have it and set it up. -
i dont have an avatar here lol
-
Don't worry about that I don't even use my NBR avatar in Mumble
-
get in the mumble peoples
-
Can you make an LoL channel if we can get a few more players in here?
-
You'll have to kneel and then tell him your request. This must be done after watching technoviking dance for 6 hours straight and then dance to techno music for 12 hours straight as a ritual though.
oh hey aren't you the one who kept on talking about LoL in mumble last night? ._. -
I'm the BC2 channel now. Get in here!

Updated the URL join links in the first post. I think you should join with authentication of 1.2.3 now so all options will be enabled.

Great job as always vicious.
I may be failing because I just got up from a nap and am a bit delirious, how do I add the server as a favourite? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Once you have connected, just go to the servers tab, click add new and it will auto populate with the current server info, so just save it.
-
Do people use this as a chat as well?? I am not looking for speech (lacking a mic) but it would be cool to have an IRC chat or like.
-
It does have text chat (with text-to-speech).
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
yes
some people use the chat more than voice as it has a chat window and automatically translates text to speech if you have it enabled.
in game though you cant typebut for those occasions you can still listen to others to help coordinate your team.
A cheap $3 mic will do you just fine BTW from walmart.
Chat is not quite like IRC, we tried IRC before a few times and it usually dies out slowly from lack of users and uses. -

Thanks for this one Vicious. I was on for a bit last night trying it out, it's pretty easy to use. I do see it popping up more and more around the place, so I guess it's good to get used to it. Ended up chatting with a user named Bearclaw (hey dude!), and turns out he's a student at the University I work at! small world!

Bearclaw shall now be stalked silently by AlyH

Security staff against the claws of a bear
Yeah i can see who'll win
We have people hanging around now though
-
hummm... so I registered my user name to the server over the break at home while I was on my netbook. I created a certificate and transfered my info over to my home computer just now and now I keep getting the following error when trying to connect:
"Wrong password for registered users, please try again." ... is there a different password once you register or something? -
I haven't tried to connect in about a week, and now I'm getting this error as well.
-
There's a password for the nbr mumble server
PM Vicious for it.
-
-
Not sure. I can still logon just fine o_o It should be the password from after the giveaway
-
So after a bit more poking around, it has to be the IP. I can log on using the same password if I change my name to another name, i.e. not the name I registered with from home. I'm assuming Vicious has access to the registered users info, maybe he can update my profile. I'll PM him..
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Gotta save your certificate if you want to use the same name between computers.
I will remove your registration so you can register again.
> There is a new password that I put in place after the giveaway
> You must have the newest 1.2.3 client also (should ask you to update if you have an older one) -

Just a bump I still host this and its open 24/7 a couple of us get on almost every night and chat for a bit (late night crew) I have not been on the last few nights cause I am too sick to talk and been pretty busy but invitation is always open for new people.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
for great justice, a bump.
-
I'm not sure if I registered or not the last time I was there, but I think you'll have to unregister me if I did, since I reinstalled Windows, and apparently Mumble views that as a new IP. I also PM'ed you for the new password.
-
Mumble is a little too tight with users, not a bad thing, but inconvinient to some point. To be able to use the same name in my server I had to import the certificate so I can have it in my desktop/laptop. Its kinda cool that my name won't be used by anyone.... But for new users not knowing the certificate deal is inconvinient.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Thats how it is for registered users, nothing I can do about that (no setting to change)
You can log on with a different name though.
Even I as the owner do not use the same certificate on both of my computers. I use "ViciousXUSMC" on my desktop and "ViciousXUSMC-G73" for my laptop. -
You can delete his certificate, at least that's what I do with user that reformated and didn't back up their old certificate.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah I can delete if somebody asks me too. Already did that once before.
I mean there is no setting I can change to not require a certificate for a registered user. -

Just to let you guys know I use the official 1.2.3 client now. I just updated the main post that was a bit old saying to use the 1.2.3PR (pre release) client.
