Looking at buying a budget notebook, for some games like CS: GO at lower settings.

Have come across Nvidia 920MX, but have seen 940MX is noticeably better, however I need help with comparing Radeon with Nvidia. So I've heard that R7 is the competitor for 940MX, but need people's opinions on which would be the slightly better one! (If you have recommendations for laptops within $1200AUD, that'd be awesome too!)

Here is one I'm currently looking at:
    Dell Inspiron 15-5000 (15.6")
    core i5 7200U processor
256gb SSD (have a spare 1TB HDD to put in)
    AMD Radeon R7 M445 - 4GB graphics processor
    FHD: 1920x1080

    Thanks!!

The 940MX would be about 10% faster if using GDDR5 memory. If the 940MX uses GDDR3, then they'd be pretty similar. Though both are absolutely horrible for anything at 1080p.

I would advice you to wait for MX 150 (GT 1030 Mobile version) enabled laptops. They will be cheap and offer way more performance than a 940 or an R7.

Considering the performance gap, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a price spike as well. He could just as well look at the Dell 5576 and get a RX 460/560 desktop card in that.

Hopefully this laptop has GDDR5, as the 940MX with it scores 40-50% higher than the DDR3 version.

Look at the some Notebookcheck benches, and find the ones with the same CPUs, but different memory.

    Time Spy - (6500U) DDR3 = 457, GDDR5 = 641 = 40.25% faster

    Fire Strike - (7500U) DDR3 = 1750, GDDR5 = 2294 = 31% faster

    Cloud Gate - (6500U) DDR3 = 8519, GDDR5 = 13459 = 58%

    Ice Storm Unlimited - (6500U) DDR3 = 123440, GDDR5 = 148959 = 20.67% faster

    ...and it's ddr3

Unless you have proof that NBC used overclocked values, I'm just going to assume that you want to paint the GPU you own in the best light possible, facts be damned.

What? That can in no way be true. Best I can give is 20%.
If it's really true, then the GTX 950M should be almost on par with the GDDR5 940MX.
