Nuke Steam and all the game files.
Then reinstall/re-download.
Also try updating your graphics drivers. -

Exit steam, wait a few seconds, and then start steam up again, once steam is started give it a few seconds and then try launching CS:S.

I have compleatly whiped everything, and reinstalled, reupdated, And NOTHING! I swear sometimes i wish i had never been introduced to the game.
-
try right clicking cs:s in steam, goto properties, set launch options and type in "add -dxlevel 81" without the "s i had a similar problem but that seems to have fixed it,
only problem is cs:s always starts at 800x600 resolution, but it works fine once you change it again -

over four months now and I cant play HL2 or any HL2 mods.
Im getting a C++ visual runtime error. Three STEAM reinstalls later. -
I mean this is really showing me the reliability in steam, if they can not fix this error. Would updating Dx to Dx 10.0 help? I mean i LOVE THIS GAME, i play it all the time with my college friends (HUGE LAN PARTY!!!!) but with this screwing up like this.... I mean really!

Faulty driver install? Have you tried reinstalling an older driver package? Try posting your dxdiag, that might help as well.
@usapatriot: Visual C++ Runtime error usually mean you're missing some C++ libraries. Here's a link to VC++ libraries:

I might be wrong though, but installing it won't hurt -

I'm downloading Visual C++ now, but I think I tried that once and it didn't help.

Tried it, did not work. -
OW, I think I know what the problem might be. Try uninstalling ATI Tray Tools. It might be causing this problem. A few days ago I installed ATI Try Tools and a few programs like Office 2007, Microsoft Live Messenger, and Windows Sidebar stopped functioning for some reason. It seems some Windows applications stopped responding (for me at least) after I installed Try Tools. Uninstall it and delete all its folders, along with the logs. If you find that ATI Tray Tools is the cause, then use Powerstrip for overclocking instead.

Ok cheeseman ill try that
Thanks! -

i would reinstall the whole windows, then download all .net updates, and then finally install the latest ati drivers.
best to have it all clean -
Ive done that. But i dont really understand about .net stuff. I have .net framework installed, but i still get a MOM.EXE error sometimes.
