AMD have fixed most of their latency and pacing issues. Now they just need to get Enduro working properly. :p

Really? I was under the impression that the driver containing the fixes has not been finalized yet and is set to be released later this year. Also, to truly solve the problem they would need to implement hardware frame metering like Nvidia does. Since this issue is so new and AMD has only been aware of it for less than a year, I don't expect AMD GPU's to have the hardware solution for at least two more generations, based on the average development cycle of a new GPU architecture.

Maybe we're interpreting the numbers differently, but I'm still seeing a huge disparity in frame time variance between SLI and Crossfire in those reviews you linked, especially in the games where AMD struggle, and it does not paint AMD in a favorable light at all. The single GPU stuff doesn't really matter because that's not where the problem is. Besides the Tom's review and the PCPer article, the other ones used FRAPS and not even FCAT or some other capture-based testing method, so they're completely worthless as far as this is concerned. AMD has publicly stated that they will be releasing the prototype driver which addresses the frame pacing issues on July 31st so this is definitely far from over. PCPer took the driver for a spin back in April when they reviewed the 7990 and it looked extremely promising but not quite at the level of the GTX 690.

There's a threshhold, in most cases they're below 20ms which is completely imperceptible. There are probably same number of games that nVidia struggles with that AMD does. nVidia tends to be tighter but still have issues.

I don't think you're understanding what Frame Rating is. At the high frame rates that the Crossfire 7970 is pumping out, a variance of 15 ms means runts or entire frames being dropped. In many cases, the observed performance of a dual 7970 is no better than a single 7970, perhaps even worse because of the wild fluctuations. See the Sleeping Dogs graphs for an extreme example. There is absolutely zero performance gain with CrossFire. All the testing done by PCPer show Nvidia to be better, sometimes significantly so, in all games.

If this wasn't a big deal, AMD wouldn't be scrambling to get a fix out ASAP and CrossFire owners wouldn't be all up in an uproar. This is a huge deal. At the moment, it means someone spending $1000 for a 7990 is getting no real improvement over someone who spent less than half of that for a 7970.

Very nice bench there HaloGod2012. What sort of temps are you getting?

@Octiceps - I don't know why you have such a hard time with the fact AMD have made great strides addressing frame metering? I know you hold Ryan's review in high regard so you should hear what he says on his guess appearance on the Wan show :)

I watched the WAN Show last week. It was awful with all the technical difficulties but I heard what Ryan said. The new driver brings about a huge improvement (still not quite as good as SLI though) and he said that he can finally start recommending AMD CrossFire configurations like the 7990. At the same time, there are still limitations that need to be addressed such as Eyefinity, 4K displays, DX9 games, and tri-fire and quad-fire setups. It's still a work in progress and the end-solution is hardware frame metering like what Nvidia has, which should hopefully appear in Radeon GPU's a few generations from now, but the early results are promising.
