    http://www.ultrasharpware.com/blog/2007/05/26/nvidia-demo-human-head/:
NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 Ultra demo “Human Head” delivers a startling leap forward in realism for real-time characters. A new sum-of-Guassians formulation of subsurface scattering within a multi-layered skin model coupled with the blazing shading performance of GeForce 8800 Ultra enables rendering of realistic human skin at a level never before seen in real-time.

To evaluate the complex skin shader and HDR lighting, “Human Head” computes 17 offscreen textures every frame totaling over 40 Million pixels, each shaded with lengthy pixel shaders. That’s more than 1.2 billion pixels every second! 4096 x 4096 color and normal textures provide photo-realistic detail even at extremely close ranges. All this shading and texture processing requires both a level of shader performance and memory bandwidth unavailable until now thanks to GeForce 8800 Ultra.

Minimum system requirements: GeForce 8800 Ultra with 256 Mb, Windows XP, ForceWare 97.44, 512 Mb RAM.

Download demo here, or watch the video here (20,45Mb), if you don’t have a 8800 Ultra card.

Downloading it anyway to see if its marketing hoo-hah :p Although there could be some sort of check to rig the vid so it won't run on anything but this card, but I doubt it. Back in 10 :D

Edit: blond moment :p (sorry Jess :D)

Yea, I'll see if it runs on my 8800GTX.

That video is pretty amazing though, that is for sure!

UPDATE: It run on my 8800GTX just fine. So anyone with an 8800GTX variation should have no issues running it. I would imagine the other 8800 series cards would be fine too.

Check it out, rendered the head in Chrome. It is pretty cool!

It runs on my 320 GTS, I've also heard that it runs fairly well on a 7800GTX.

Awesome! Hopefully Elder Scrolls 5 will use this kind of tech, instead of the weird, alien look that Oblivion had.

Man, why does Nvidia get all the cool demos? :(
*can't wait until he gets his 8700M GT, just so he can see the tech demos* :p

That demo is amazing. It's hard to believe how far we've gotten in graphics power. Granted, it helps that his eyes are closed and he has no hair (hair and eyes are notoriously difficult to render realistically), but the skin is still extremely impressive. It'll probably be a few more years before we see this kind of detail in actual games, although as good as the heads in Crysis look, who knows?

I don't like it... Shure it looks nice, but it will never be used in actual gameplay since as they stated, it's extremely demanding. I don't even think that an 8800Ultra could even smoothly render a couple of full people using this tech. Most of the nice tech seen in the Nvidia demos were never used when they were exclusive to nvidia. I think that the SMOKE demo will probebly be used in actual games, but not this, atleast not for a few years. Oh and the Nvidia smoke demo runs great on my ATI x1600 :)

In my opinion, new tech like Tessellation, will be adopted much faster than something that requires a massive amount of memory just to render a single skinhead. Although VERY nice, it's somewhat impractical right now.

Agreed, but it is still pretty amazing that a card can render that in real time. Just shows how far GPU's have come over the years.

A few years ago, they were showing off HDR lighting, and people said "yeah, very nice, but we'll never be able to use this in games".

Yes, it's a tech demo, and no, a GF8 card can't pull stuff like this off in a game.
But the fact that it can be done in realtime with one single model today means that it can be done on multiple models at the same time next year. And maybe the year after, it can be done pretty much freely in games.

It should run, maybe a little choppy. Give it a shot and let us know.

    Well said.

Looks very nice that a card that can do real time rendering and still stay smooth. Hopefully i can get a new desktop, with 2 8800 GTX. Might be soon

I think Jalf really hit the nail on the head.

This is really impressive, and considering my 8800GTS seemed to run it perfectly, I could see the next line of nvidia cards later this year, 9x00 series running a full person or more.
Perhaps that's just wishful thinking /shrug.

im downloading it to run on a 256meg 8600m gt ;)

ill let you know how it turns out.

    edit:

it runs on the 8600m gt at a few frames per second @ 1440x900. it looks really advanced and the lighting is scarily realistic.

Right about when this gets mainstream would be a good time to actually enforce "mature" videogame ratings

except the downloaded file doesn't have just an exe program or anything like that. it has several folders. Including: audio, bin, models, shaders, textures, and ui. But in none of them is there an executable file or anything like that.
