Hi guys im looking at two laptops with pretty much the same config except for the graphics card .. dell offers the GT540 M 2gb .. and hp offers the AMD RADEON HD 6770M (1gb)... i was hoping i cud get some feedback as to which card is better... because on other forums the GT 540M hasnt got great reviews .. saying it wont be able to utilize its 2gb of vram effectively...

The 6770M is 40 to 50 percent faster.

    There's no comparison.

AMD 6770m smokes the gt540m. The gt555m even looses to it, very slightly though.

It would get narrower, if for some reason you wanted to hook up an eyefinity setup or the equivalent with nvidia and then run on 16xx AA then the video memory probably would come into play since 1GB might be a bit cramped for something of that scale. This is all hypothetical though because with either of those GPU's if you tried anything like that on a recent game then you'd be looking at a slideshow.

The GDDR5 memory in the 6770M gives it a considerable advantage, especially when gaming at higher resolutions.

Also, I feel this is comment is important to slip in here. I say this everywhere, but the more people I can prevent from making the screen mistake, the better. If you're buying the XPS 15, you must get the 1920x1080 display upgrade. Do not buy that laptop with the standard 1366x768 screen, since the particular B156XW01 LCD panel they use for the 1366x768 is one of the worst 15-incher screens currently available, while the particular B156HW01-V7 panel they use for the 1920x1080 is the absolute best you can get on a laptop in this class and price range. The XPS 15 is not worth considering unless you get the screen upgrade.

Not only is the quality much better, but having a higher resolution lets you fit significantly more on your screen (read: side-by-side windows are actually possible)

    XPS 15 coupon: 932N$0ZCCHWZB9

I'd also suggest the same upgrade on the HP. There is also a big quality difference (however, the 1366x768 display is not quite as bad, and the 1920x1080 display is not quite as good, though still well above average), and the thing about resolution giving you more screen space applies too.
This is a saved configuration that includes the 1920x1080 display and the 1GB 6770M (do not get 2GB; makes no difference and is a waste of $$$)
Base off of this configuration. You can upgrade other things, just don't change what the graphics card and display are set to.

And use this coupon code: NBQ5286 to shave a huge amount off of the price (more than makes up for the cost of the screen upgrade).

The 6770M owns the GT 540m.

The extra 1Gb of Vram won't get you anything except extra 1 Gb of Vram

A little heads up about the HP dv6/dv7 minor revision, their AMD Graphic cards has gone to the Nvidia's Optimus route and the manual switch has been removed.

Which maybe be a little nuisance with certain opengl based or older games.

Yes AMDs PowerXpress(or BACON) has plenty of issues right now and HP is acting as a test mule for BACON for some reason.

Are you from India cause the 6017tx is available in India only as far as i know. And no the 6017tx has no issues, BACON has not been implemented in the dv6t qe 60xx series, only models that are called 61xx have BACON.

6770m is faster by a decent margin. it is on par with the none gimped 555m (there isnt that many benchmarks but 6770M is faster than 555m in alot of games)

hi! is it HP pavilion dv6-6185ex you are looking right now? coz im looking at the same thing and was wondering if the laptop has any issues...

my wife was about to get Samsung RF511 but upon seeing issues regarding nvidia GT540M with optimus in nvidia forums...we sorta backed out in buying it...

so our 2nd option is getting dv6-6185ex with amd radeon 6770 in it...luckily i found this forum...im not very much of a techy person so i hope you guys can help me decide if HP Pavilion dv6-6185ex is worth buying rather than the Samsung RF511..

suggestions for laptops with same price range is very much appreciated too...as long as they are available in the store where my wife will buy the laptop...

i'll use the laptop mainly for gaming/multimedia/entertainment purposes...

The HP 6185ex will have PowerXpress, AMDs own take on Optimus and it also has issues currently. The biggest issue is that the card is unable to work with OpenGL applications like Photoshop and Minecraft so you are gonna be stuck using the Integrated card for OpenGL applications.

I think the 555m beats the 6770m, but not by a very significant amount.

I'm not sure whether the 555m is intended to compete with the 6770m, but rather the 6850m. The 6770m as OP suggests is the 540m counterpart.

The 6850m (when its not gimped with DDR3) wins that battle by a fair amount.

But the next price range, with the 560m - I think Nvidia wins that battle vs the 6870m.

The 6770m will perform better and give more value for money.
The 540m will probably run cooler than the 6770m.

The 1GB more Vram will not make a difference. I would only go for the nVidia option if I needed PhysX/Cuda.

you got part of that right.

The 6770m is little bit faster than the gt 555m, but not by much.

The 6850 when coupled with the DDR3 is indeed significantly slower, however, you need to overclock both the 6770m and the gt 555m to achieve that performance.

I don't understand how you can say the 6770m is better than the 555m or vice-versa. They both win their fair share of battles. Inter-architectural battles isn't a quantifiable matter.

because I take into account the different versions of the gt 555m, simple as that. And as I said its a slight win.

and it wouldnt make any sense to have to competing companies if you cant say which is better or not, there wouldnt be a decision based on performance, only on price, thus it would lead to a no win situation, and you cant have that in games of either kind

Of course there is, that's the ENTIRE concept behind competition, because there's no definitive answer. If one company is clearly better than another, then one will be going out of business shortly.

6770m is better than a GT 540m, but I don't think it takes the cake from the 555m. Or vice-versa. The GDDR5 version withstanding, because that one blows.

have yet to see the performance of the GDDR5 version, not the gimped 96 core, but the full 144 core. Currently as it stands the 6770m is indeed faster, not by much.

and thats not the concept of competition. You are forgetting the basic price and quantity curve.

Competition by definition involves some sort of equality. The LA Lakers vs your high school team isn't a "competition". Apple vs IBM is competition.

For the longest time (since... Prescott?), AMD wasn't Intel's competition, until very recently, but that's yet to be determined.

you are just missing this. what you said is hardly the economic definition of competition

    and this
    [IMG]

not to mention other decision making curves as well.

but to give you a break, competition involves specific notions of the product in the buyers eyes, it doesnt matter if bugatti or ferrari are trying to make the best car. What it matters is for the group of people that are interested in buying those cars what purchase satisfy them most.

competition is defined by the price and the niche market, and in there enter several subsets that alter the decision making process, performance, expected returns, appreciation, and several others.

Competition is mainly a thing that is subjective to the buyer that we are trying to conquer with our product, it doesnt matter if ours is better or not. What matters is the subset of itens that take part on the decision making process.

This is on the perspective of the buyers.

For the perspective of the companies, you need to see what you need to get your product to deliver the necessary value for the costumer, so that it perceives as the best return possible. It doesnt matter if your is faster, it doesnt matter if your price is fairer, it doesnt matter for a lot a of people those things, you can see on graph 2 a normal distribution, and the top of it is where the companies try to insert their products, for that market.

Thus competition is merely the art of prospecting what your consumer wants and delivering them. The value of the products is not the price tag, but the satisfaction of the consumer.

Since AMD delivered very budget friendly options, and still delivers them, I dont see why they dont compete with intel. They do at the lower thier range of budget. and they are them good at it, their revenue on cpu sales only rose with the phenom II line, not to mention the athlon II line.

The companies dont have to have any kind of equality, only their products need to be in the same niche, thats the only requirement for competing teams.

A clear cut example, when you go to market, there are 2 cheeses for you to choose from for your burgers this evening, cheddar cheese (horrible thing) or formaggio ircano, for you the former would be better, however if you do a salad the latter would be more adequate, or to plain eat it with some olive oil and italian bread, or even tastier roman bread

See 2 types of the same things, however different uses and prices led your choices. they dont compete with each other

Thanks for the unnecessary economics lecture (notice it's the first use of the word "economic" anywhere). Good thing what we're discussing completely neglects the notion of cost, therefore the entire "economics" approach falls flat on its face. There's no consideration for cost here, which is what "economics" is based on. Just performance.

The question isn't a matter of what's more economical, which AMD/ATI cards have proven to be, but a matter of what's "better"? Could there be a more subjective word? It's what's "faster". However, conflicts arise from differing architecture, which results in discrepancies in the ultimate determinant of performance: the benchmarks, be it synthetic or real world. As aforementioned, 6770m bags a few wins over the 555m, and vice-versa.

Anyway, continue. But you need a new argument.

If you ignore 3dmark benchmarks and look at gaming, I would say the 555m is slightly better than the 6770m. This is especially true when most implementations of the 6770m use dynamic switching, which comes at a slight performance cost and no overclockability.

Notebookcheck's benchmarks, at the highest settings the 6770m does better, but at slightly reduced settings at which a player is most likely to play at, the 555m has an edge.

But since XPS 17 comes with a 555m and Envy 17 comes with a 6850m, I think those were the cards meant to compete with each other.

The AMD 6770m wins for sure when it comes to 3dmark benchmarks.

But when it comes to actual games I think the 555m wins.

Have you seen the reports of the M14x owner's lounge? You can compile all of them, but I guarantee you won't come up with anything half convincing to rank the 6770m above the 555m.

Which you say in a GT540 comparison thread...

The only reason why the GTX555m was brought in, is that there are two variants. One is a GT540m with GDDR5 attached (not enough to overcome it's ROP deficiency), one is a cut down GTX560m with DDR3. The m14x has the faster of the two. Which doesn't matter, since we are talking about a HP Pavillion laptop, and for that matter, that's the reason for the OP to even ask the question :p

And looking at the post history of this thread, it seems you were the only one to bring up the M14x's unique (since even Clevo/Sager doesn't have it) GTX555m.

    MSI GX680 is the model.

It's an MXM-B card with some of the memory chips missing and the core cut down. A 128bit GTX560M but with some shaders and ROPs turned off too.
