    NVIDIA GT 650M

For discussing the NVIDIA GT 650M.

Here are several benchmarks run on my new laptop which comes with the NVIDIA GT 650M. Hopefully, this will give anyone interested, a rough idea on the capabilities of this new GPU.

I intend to update these benchmarks as time goes on with additional games and with new drivers. Feel free to share your own scores with everyone :)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DETAILS

This GPU is based on Kepler, NVIDIA's latest architecture. This means with the advent of driver support, this GPU is capable of new Kepler-exclusive features such as Adaptive V-Sync, TXAA, DX11.1 etc.

The card also makes use of the Turbo Boost feature of Kepler. The card runs at a base rate of 835MHz but often dynamically overclocks itself to 950MHz, providing temperatures are not too high (i.e. laptop must have an efficient cooling system).

can you run 3dmark06 and post a screenshot of the cpu score and gpu score and sm3 sm2 score all in one screenshot. Also run 3dmark vantage and 3dmark11.

Also do you have a power consumption reader, if so can you tell me what watts it takes like lets say batman arkham city demo does it take 80w's on everything maxed out without aa hopefully at 40-60fps.

Oh, this uploaded without me knowing and before it was ready! Must of pressed 'submit' by mistake! Ooops :/

Yes, I have included some synthetic benchmarks to the list :)

Batman Arkham City is coming soon, I actually own the full game on Steam but I have to download it first and my internet isn't very fast so it takes a while!

Your OEM driver is not generic, it's just a older driver. If you want, I can make you a modded INF for the 301.42 driver with all the OEM settings retained. You have to send me the current INF for your GPU.

Thanks! How do I give you that INF? Where is it located?

It got a score of 3066. According to the website that corresponds to: 'Fairly High Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to a higher resolution depending on performance.'

Go here C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer2\Display.Driver.0 and copy the "nvxx.inf" file to a zip file, and post it here.
The installer directory might have a different number in your case. Pick the one with the highest number, if you have multiple installer directories.

I need the hardware ID of your GPU too. I am seeing multiple 650M's in the INF.

Edit: Never mind, they all have the same settings. I would make a modded INF soon.

Edit: Here you go, download the 301.42 driver, and copy/ replace the the attached "nvsm" inf file in the "Display.Driver" folder of the driver package (extract the driver with 7-zip or by running the installer).
Run the setup, choose custom install and check perform clean installation and ignore the Windows security warning to install the driver. The 301.42 driver already has the settings for your GPU, I just included the GPU strings in the INF.

    Supported Samsung GPU's by my modded INF: 610M, 630M, 640M and 650M.

It wouldn't allow me to run it at that resolution, I couldn't change it from the default. Score = 12676, SM2.0 score = 5393, HDR/SM3.0 score = 5633

    Thanks! :D

Is it safe to install? No risk of damage is there? The last thing I want to do is damage my brand new GPU!

Nothing is safe.. but again nothing should happen, several 650M users have installed this driver and it's has just improved benchmarks :) laptopvideo2go.com is very professional and the current driver has been tested several times

I confirm that 301.42 drivers improve benchmarks and allows to overclock my 650M GT 1GBB GDDR5. Works like a charm with the modded inf.

Now i get 13600 pts at 1366*768 in 3D06 despite cpu turbo being locked on my Clevo (my 2720qm cpu score is only 4200 instead of 5000+). I should have hit the 14000 with cpu turbo i guess...

Overclocked at max with NvidiaInspector (best tool ever) so +135 mhz on core.

    Core : 835mhz to 970mhz (16% OC)
    memory : 2000mhz to 2500mhz

Got 14600 in 3D06 so only 1000 pts more. Didn't tried 3D11 to see if OC makes a bigger difference though.

hmm, if it was at 1280x1024 your gpu would be just around 2.25x faster I would say. I plan to get one if I can get a really good deal. Anyway driver san francisco runs at 33fps on high at 1280x800 so my computer is still doing the business.

You should play 90% of games on high at 60fps at 720p. My gpu runs pes 2012 fifa 11 at 60fps trackmania at over 60fps on high etc dirt 3 on high at 35fps arkham city at 38 fps on high arkham asylum similar so gt 650m will run anything on high at 60fps and even some on ultra with dx11 at 60fps.

I'm having a problem with downloading the 301.42 driver for my 650m. Every time I try to download it tells me that it cannot detect the correct graphic hardware. Help? Anyone?
You'll have to excuse me seeing as I'm a bit new to laptop gaming.
ALSO NOTE I HAVE AN HP LAPTOP (Not sure if this effects anything)

Your GPU is not supported by the 301.42 driver. You need a modded INF, or wait until the next driver release.

Thanks a ton! I downloaded it and it worked like a charm.
My only problem is that whenever I run 3Dmark11 it puts it in a smaller resolution. My resolution is 1600x900 and it runs it at 1280x720.
Before I downloaded 301.42, the 3Dmark11 tests took up my whole screen.
Is this a problem or is this normal?
    Thanks.

It will still run it 1280x720, but I believe there is an option in 3DMark11 to run it centered or full screen. If it goes full screen it will just stretch the image to fit.

I uninstalled Steam while forgetting to back up game data first (doh!) and only half the games were backed up on an external hard disk (luckily all the save files were though - phew). So the reason for the delay in updated benchmarks on modded 301.42 driver is because my download speeds are pitifully slow at a maximum of 1.2mb/sec when I'm lucky. So it's taking a while to get these games downloaded again - especially Arkham City at a whopping 16GB!!!

Also I intend to use fraps to benchmark actual gameplay in these games already benchmarked and others such as Skyrim, Serious Sam 3, RAGE, Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2 etc.

I also intend to write a review of the actual laptop itself. So far I'm very pleased with it!

Hey Cakefish, thanks for all the good work on the benchmarks that you've done. I'm on the verge of buying the samsung laptop that you've used for these benchmarks and I have a few questions about the gt 650m and i5 3210m:

    1. is there any CPU bottlenecking at 1366x768 or lower resolutions that you can detect?
    2. does the i5 3210 balance well with the gt 650m? (related to the first question really).
    3. How hot does the gt 650m/i5 3210m get during average gaming sessions (of 1-3 hours) ?
    4. what is the build quality of the laptop like?

    1) Nope, I haven't. In games, performance always improves when I overclock the GPU, hence the i5-3210M is definitely not bottlenecking the 650M :)

    2) I think so, an i7 for this GPU doesn't make sense unless you need the extra speed for other tasks besides gaming. Only a tiny minority of PC games are CPU dependant. This CPU is definitely powerful enough not to bottleneck the 650M.

    3) Absolute max I have recorded is 78 degrees while testing Furmark which is the most intensive application you're gonna find. In actual games it hovers in the high 60's, occasionally hitting 70. The laptop chasis itself stays cool however, during gaming sessions (see below).

    4) I'm content with the build quality. I've come from a Sony VAIO E series and I can safely say that this has comparable quality. The fan however, is much quieter and the laptop's keyboard/palmrest stays surprisingly cool during heavy loads. It looks attractive in my opinion (I have the silver one) and has really fantastic speaker system for a laptop with the integrated subwoofer. The keyboard and trackpad are perfect, can't complain about any aspect on this regard, they are responsive, smooth and comfortable to use. Battery life is also far, far superior to my old VAIO, due to more efficient Ivy Bridge/Kepler parts and Optimus.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other news I will get around to adding more games to the list tomorrow based on 301.42 driver as well as overclocking results - they look promising!

Thanks for the excellent reply. I've been ruminating over this issue for a while now. I would imagine that the performance of the GT 650m will improve when official drivers come out as well, which means that we have yet to see the full potential of this card!

Apparently ivy bridge processors run a bit hotter when overclocked although I it seems that this would be less of a problem with a dual core compared to a quad core.

I'd be interested to read any review you create in the future although I most likely would have bought the laptop by then; with your good feedback tipping me over the edge.

Anyway keep up the good work!

The I7 makes a difference in specific games in which the CPU plays a factor due to coding. Example Skyrim, Arma2, DOW2, etc.. Again it depends on how the game is coded. Its not as simple as a statement that an I7 will not increase performance in ANY game vs the I5.

Although some games can benefit from a quad i7, it does not mean that they are not fully playable with great frame rates with settings the 650m can handle. Of your list of games, the only game I would be concerned about is arma2 (havent tested it on a dualcore, but will shortly to test your theory).

Skyrim, DOW2, SC2, BF3, Shogun2 (all cpu heavy games) all play perfectly on an i5

Just to put in my .02 here.

    Got a HP dv6t 7000 series with an i7-3610QM and the GT 650M GDDR5 (2GB).

I currently have installed on my machine Sniper Elite V2, Skyrim, MW3 and NFS The Run.

If you guys need benchmarks, I can throw in my specs. I currently have 301.42 installed, but I'm using the .inf from laptopvideo2go, would I be losing out on something when I use it instead of what coolguy posted?

I also use MSI Afterburner to overclock..didn't try finding out the threshold but I currently have it set at 825/915(boost) core and 2200Mhz Mem. It averages around 75C when running, with ambient temps in my room reaching ~27C. (triend all max on both one time--artifacted a bit so I got scared and put it down lol)

One thing I notice though--I use MSI Afterburner's built-in Rivatuner OSD, and I sometimes see that the mem core drops to ~800mhz while gaming, kinda like it throttles down. Does it, or does the memory speed not need to be up 100% all the time?

PS, thanks CakeFish. Great post. :D

Yes the HP pavillion 7000 looks interesting although I'm based in the UK and I don't know what the shipping arrangements would be (if there are any at all).

Games/applications are increasingly utilising more cores albeit very slowly and I bet we'll start to see very well optimised games when quad cores become standard issue in computers.

The alienware m14x r2 utilises an 15-3210m which I find quite interesting - any thoughts on this?

I got the 7000 series basically because I need the quad config for video editing and gfx. But yeah, I'd probably think only games like GTAIV can utilize an ounce of quad powers. It doesn't start to get CPU intensive unless you play RTS games.

Also, I think the custom builds are available only in the US. Unless you have a relative who can send it over for you. I got this one during the PC show in Singapore last weekend. :D

Hey, i've been following this thread mainly for a decent driver. i waited till today for the Beta which would work with the GT650m from nvidia but it doesn't. I think we'll need a modded INF again =s

    Yeah just noticed that.

Just found out that NVIDIA apparently don't support Optimus laptops with driver updates which is a joke because the vast majority of new laptops have Optimus :(
