I know this is something that could theoretically be googled but I haven't found any reviews that put them head to head. All I know is that a system with a 2gb version of the 540 costs over $300 more than a system with 525. Is the performance and future proofing from the 540?

Both GPUs (GT525M and GT540M) are based on the same chip, only the frequencies changes and probably you can achieve with a GT525M the same frequencies of a GT540M. 300$ for this upgrade only sounds a bit absurd.
Speaking about the GT555M: it's based on another chip who can provide up to 30% more performance (compared to the GT540M)so a price gap of 300$ could be tolerable (you should have to check also if the GT555M has GDDR5 or DDR3).
