How big is the difference between NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS V.S. NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT?

Either one will get you through whatever you need ok for the next year or two. Just depends whether you'll have the graphic settings set all the way to high or not. But the 8400M G will do just fine.
-
Pretty big.
16 stream processors vs 32 stream processors
That alone is a big difference. -
It's a big difference, the higher you go up in the chain the closer it becomes. The chain, starting from 8400m GS goes like this. 8400M gs, 8400M GT, 8600M GS, 8600M GT.
-
Actually, there's an 8400M G, which is before the 8400M GS.
The 8400M G has only 8 stream processors. -

If the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS was back up with a Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz/2MB L2Cache) but the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT was back up with a Intel® Core™2 Duo processor T5250 which one should I get?
-
Depends on the RAM of the two systems and what you plan to do with your laptop.
Could you post specs of the two systems you are looking at? -

I personally would go with the dv6500t, because the processor is faster and it's a Santa Rosa chipset, so it should have better battery life.
However, extreme gamers would probably go for the 5920 just for the 8600M GT. -
If you are mainly using it for gaming then I'd go with the 8600M GT. If you don't care about gaming or do VERY little gaming, I'd go with the 8400m gs. But even with moderate gaming, you should notice a huge difference. You can't get the Dell 1520 configured under your budget?

I'm wondering how much would the difference be between the processor speeds?
They r both faster then an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-50 1.6 right? -
However, it's an Intel product vs. an AMD product. I think real-world testing would be a better way to see which is faster.
The T7100 is definitely faster than the TL-50 though. -
The GPU is the bottleneck in most of the games, with an exception of supreme commander, and yes, the intel core duo's outperform the turions. You can check tomshardware for the exact differences. But if you look around the reviews, you can check super pi results for both processors and make a rough guesstimate.

Hmm...besides Gaming what else would need a good graphics card?
-
Watching video? Photo / video editing? I dunno.

If I was gonna use the computer for integrated 3D modeling, animation, effects and rendering, and Architectural stuff would laptop would be more suitable? (yea I know I'm asking a lot of questions, sorry ^^
-
You need 4 things, A fast CPU for compiling stuff, gpu for 3d rendering, 7200k rpm hdd for fast access, and 3gb of ram on windows machine. You can go 4gb if you use linux.

What kind of games are you exactly looking to play? Now and in the future?
-

I'd also be using Maya, Flash, Photoshop type stuff for visual editing and animation -
In regards to the 2d/3d rendering, the 8400 should be fine. In regards to the games, with the 8600m gt you'll be able to have the settings and the resolution much higher than the 8400m GS. I think the 8400 should be able to run those games, but you would probably have to sacrfice quality. oh btw... where can you get that aspire priced so low?

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
ok it just depends. you can make your own decision.
the faster cpu will speed up tasks outside of games. the faster gpu will speed up gaming and any 3d modeling. in my opinion you probably wont notice the cpu speed difference in normal tasks, you probably will notice the gpu in games. -
Well it's my opinion, and I'm more of a gamer/hi-def enthusiast, so I would sacrifice the CPU for the better GPU. A photoshopper, media editor would sacrifice the GPU for the CPU. There's a lot of buzz coming from the launch of the santa rosa platform and the 8x00m nvidia series. This is how I put it, I can always wait a little bit longer for my movie/picture render to finish, but I can never speed up the FPS in a game or turn on more of the eye candy. =).

800 front side bus as opposed to 667. That's it. I guess also full support for intel turbo memory, and 8x00m cards, and intel wireless N.
-
nooo, the 1520 gets extremely expensize fast. it comes standard with a 1.5ghz Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa. So after a 120gb HDD 8600 GS and 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo, its 1274 dollars
-
which makes me want to get the HP. -
Hate to bump a "old" thread, but could a 8400m play STALKER decently? I'm not a big PC gamer at all, I mostly stick to tycoon games, but I wanted to play STALKER, and my other option is a GeForce7500LE on my Desktop, which struglles running HL2
.
-
It's like this in ordered of better performance:
8400M GS
8400M GT
8600M GS
8600M GT
I don't know about the 8400 series, but the 8600M GS corresponds to the GeForce 7600 and the 8600M GT corresponds to the 7900GS. However....that is just theoretical. As of now, they perform worse than their DX9 counterparts .
If you are an avid gamer like me, I'd say go with the 8600M GT. It will allow you play games on medium settings longer than any of the 8400M cards. -
but running a 8600m GT with a 17"(1920x1200) wouldn't be enough would it having buyer's remorse and it hasn't even shipped yet.
-
i wonder if these cards would be powerfull enough to run sc2 in the future
-
-
Alright, thanks alot davron, I was sweating it !
Oh, and the 8400m is better then the 7500LE right? -
-
Hi
In the future, I would like to play games like Halo 3 or GTA 4 on my laptop... Is that possible with the 8400m gs? -
I also think that GTA 4 will not require much, by looking at the trailer. But again, I don't know - check the system requirements. -
I have been busting my brain trying to figure out what video card to purchase.... this thread has helped tremendously... I thank you guys. Now I have a system built and was wondering if you guys can help me in determining its capability. I was thinking of runnng games like civilization or Battle for middle earth at their highest setting and was wondering if this laptop package is enough:
Dell Inspiron 1720
Intel® Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
Size: 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Total: $2,142
In addition...is there a big difference is purchasing an "XPS" model..for gaming in particular... I pretty much have the same thing with an XPS but the XPS is higher in price.. -
well... the 8400gs is a little choppy with halo 2 , so i doubt it could run halo 3 well.
-
halo 3 wont be out for so long...
-
hey..im looking at buying a sony vaio SZ series. this one comes with the 8400M GS GPU with purevideo, with a core 2 duo processor T7100(1.8GHz) n a gig of ram, probably upgrading to 2gigs. im not a serious gamer, but i occasionally do, and i'd like decent graphics to play with. does the system sound alright? btw, how do i know if this system uses this santa rosa chipset? i havent noticed anything on the specs, does this mean it doesnt use santa rosa? thanks for ur help
