The 8700m GT is roughly a 8600-GT (desktop). So then you have your conversion to SLI. You should remember that there are very few games that can take full advantage of SLI. Many games 'designed' for SLI will give you ~1.3x-1.5x performance, instead of the 2x intended performance.

What do you think I will be able to play on a:

    Dell XPS M1730
    17" WUXGA Screen
Dual SLI 256MB Nvidia Geforce 8700 GT
    Core 2 Duo T7500
    320GB HDD

Any game now. As long as you keep at 1400x900 I have read even crysis can run on high. If you have the option instead of SLI 8700m, go for a 8800m. It is more power and you quit the bet of SLI.

Look for a review of a Toshiba with SLI 8700m, made by Chaz. There he reviews more than 6 (modern) games and his conclusion (which I do agree) is that SLI is a risky bet performance-wise. You will most of the time get stuck with the performance of a single card, but paid for two.

Okay, I have a budget of 20k and just asking if this was any good because I'm in a competition were you can win one, so if I don't win I was woundering if I should buy, because I'm gonna buy a good laptop anyway. Already got a Toshiba A200-1V0 that I am using for sorting out working issues etc. :)
And I'm pretty comfortable with Toshiba so ok, thanks will check that one out.

    i bouth a second 8700GT 3 weeks ago!
At the begging sli was very bad because of vista!
Now with 174.16 driver sli is very stable and i can handle hellgate london,cod4,UT3 1490x900 in very high! Temperatures are very good comparing to the 7950 gtx!
    Im waiting for SP1 now!!

You shoud save some money SLI 8700 is not that expensive. :)

When sli set up is common among even the poorest gamers. However, we should head there soon, since even now some mid end rigs now have sli set up (desktop). For laptops, it might take another couple years before any standard performance laptop (excluding gaming laptops, obviously some already has the options) will be equipped with SLI. imo, the chance of they inventing dual core GPUs is higher than the idea of having sli becoming mainstream, due to the cost, needs, and the performance issues of sli, they are probably just better off engineering dual core gpus instead of fiddling with the uncertainty of sli set ups.

Will do, but I will wait until Mars 15th when the winners will be announced on the competiton and if I buy one now, OFCOURSE i will win the laptop then.
So I will wait until Mars 15th even if I won't win in the end.

man with that budget i'd get a Suzuki Hayabusa and an m17x maxxed out and still have enough money left over for a uber gaming desktop....i mean seriously i wouldn't even recommend sager right now.
alienware are supposed to be coming out with a special curved monitor, so why not go ahead and get that too with the leftover...

@Meemat- rofl at your comment...good ol' fashioned duck tape eh? never fails...

sli will probably never be common practice. Its popularity has remained relatively consistent in the past few years. if anything 2 GPU's on one die like the 9800GTX may be popular but the single card solution is still prefered by even the performance enthusiast community.

ah...well still...quite a lot..and now i would recommend the sager maxed out with SLi 8800GTX. but still wait a little bit for the m17x and see how that stacks up.

SLi comes into play if you plan on playing games at higher than 1920 resolution on an external monitor. A single card like the 8800GTX should do fine with most games at 1920 at max anyways, however with SLi you'll obviously see some improvement otherwise nvidia wouldn't have bothered with it.
