Hi, I am looking to replace my Dell XPS M170 with an Asus G50VT-A1 or Asus G50V-A1. From what I can tell the only major difference between the two Asus models is the video card. One has the 9700GT 512mb and the newer one with the 9800 GS 512 mb. Is the 9800 worth the extra $300 to $400 more?
thanks

9700M GT = 128-bit memory interface with 32 shaders (mid-range card)
9700M GTS = 256-bit memory interface with 48 shaders (high-end card)
9800M GS = 256-bit memory interface with 64 shaders (high-end card)
so the difference is quite huge from 9700M GT to 9800M GS.
one is mid-range (with 128-bit mem interface) and the other is high-end (with 256-bit mem interface) -
here is the order:

Hmm... doesn't the 9800m GTS have 64 shaders as well? What's the difference between those two? Maybe just clock speeds?
-
yup 9800M GS has lower clock speeds than GTS.
9800M GS:
Core Clock: 530MHz
Memory Clock: 799MHz
Shader Clock: 1325MHz
9800M GTS:
Core Clock: 600MHz
Memory Clock: 800MHz
Shader Clock: 1500MHz -
Hey Gophn, great info on the table. Just wondering, do you the code for the FX 3700M, FX 2700M, FX 1700M, FX 770M and FX 370M (which specific core they are based from?) I speculate the 3700M is just a higher shader 9800M GTX, 2700M should be a 9700M GTS based on the shader count, 1700M should be a 9650M GT since I believe it is a NB9P, 770M should be a 9600M GT, and 370M should be a 9300M GS. Also, is the 9400M G in your table the new integrated graphics used in the MBP?
-
the Quadro 3700M is just a 9800M GTX with 16 more shaders.
and yes, the new MBP's are using the 9400M that is listed. -
Are the other quadros paired with the right geforce?
-
yes.
you can check yourself by look at the shaders and memory interfaces.
-
Thanks a lot, Gophn! Now I'm curious to find out estimated power consumption figures...
edit: point me to your sources! 9700M GS isn't listed on the nVidia site, so can't find the shader info:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html -
9800M GS is not on Nvidia's site yet.
but the 9800M GTS and the 9700M GTS are listed.
there are multiple reviews of the Asus G50VT with 9800M GS out there:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=311122
http://benyouhui.it168.com/thread-827253-1-1.html
GPU-Z in those reviews did not pick up the name correctly (says its a 9800M GT), but the other info seems accurate.
GPU-Z will probably pick up the card correctly in the next update. -
so the difference in memory clock is only 1mhz?
-
No it´s like you see above Core 70 MHz+ on 9800m GTS, Mem +101 and Shaders +175 MHz compared to the 9800m GS. Which by the way is easy to overclock to 9800m GTS levels of performance.
+1 Rep that I can count?
-
So really how likely is it that one would be able to just overclock and not have heat issues if I had a 15.4" laptop and a 9800m GS. I they obviously have the lower clocked card in there because of space and heating.
-
Uh. I asked about the 9700M GS... thanks for the 9800M GS info though.
-
I think you mean 9700M GTS ..... since there no GS.

Got alphabet soup cooking in here.

Maybe the confusion was brought to us courtesy of Best Buy. Their webpage seems to list the 9700M GS as the GPU carried in the Asus G71V-X2 ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9087882&type=product&id=1218018675782).
The G71 comes in various flavors:
-G71V-Q1 (w/ 9700M GT): http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G71V-Q1&Category_Code=AS17
-G71g-A1 (w/ 9800M GS): http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G71G-A1&Category_Code=AS17
-G71g-A2 (w/ 9800M GS): http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G71G-A2&Category_Code=AS17
The "original" Asus G70V holds a 9700M GT: http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=74&l3=763&l4=0&model=2415&modelmenu=2
Best Buy could have made a mistake in their listed specifications or could have gotten a "special" GPU bundled in their notebook (which according to NVidia nomenclature should indicate a performance between the 9650M GT and the 9700M GT).
Hope this helps clear things up a bit!

I don't understand... why are people so wrapped up on rep?
-
it makes your ***** larger
-
You're going to have to edit your table then

oh, well that table does come from Nvidia.
the 9700M GS does not seem to be available in any systems yet.. but I am guessing its slightly slower than the GT.
