Decent, but that is definitely not the best deal he can get. It's huge too. Try asking him to fill the form on the "What Laptop Should I get" section of the forums.

For an 18.4", it is a not a really subtle graphics card choice for the money he is paying. There are a few 17.3" machines that carries a better GPU for the price.

Examples: Envy 17 w/6850M , HP Pavilion DV7 w/ 6770M, MSI GX780R or ASUS G74 with 560M. All have better GPU's for around the same $1500 USD he is looking at (or around you know...).

    My $0.02 to you... :)

I have the 555M and love it. If you don't mind overclocking when you are going to game, its a great card for what it is. Runs very cool and never has crashed on me regardless of how long I have played on it.

It's safe to say that for the money I spent for my XPS ($1600) that you can get a better deal with a more powerful card.

Regardless, I am very happy with my system and the 555M in general.

Hmz, but thats the crippled version with a 128bit mem bus, it will certainly struggle at 1080p.

Going down to 17.3" and getting over twice the performance makes sense. You wont even have to sacrifice resolution.

You can always hook it up to an external monitor at home.

If your friend complains, slap him.

I got the GT445 (almost the same card) and untill now, it works superb, BUT, my screen resolution is 1600*900 not FHD. It depends on the kind of game he plays. On Red Faction Guerrilla I have to almost disable AA... Hydrophobia plays great on max settings... I mostly don't play newer games, mostly because the prices ;)

I'm finding the Alienware M14x has the best bang for buck GT 555m since it's the 24 ROP 192-bit bus version compared with the 16 ROP 128-bit bus version on everything else. Unfortunately for whatever reason Alienware decided to use GDDR3 instead of GDDR5 which would have helped quite a bit too, but it is what it is.

And lol of the image with the touchpad removed. What's up with that? LOL.

8951G touchpad is removable and works as a remote control.

Yep... and would be better if trackpad is like the one from the Apple laptops. Two things I miss the most from using my MBP are trackpad and iPhoto.

Wow, in my opinion that laptop is a horrible deal.

You can get an Alienware m17x R3 with insanely more powerful graphics for a couple hundred more, or an 8170 Sager with insanely more powerful graphics for a couple hundred more (or just simply better graphics for about the same price), or an Asus G73-/4, etc.

There's no way in hell I'd pay that much money for an Acer with a crippled version of the 555m which is already a "bleh" card.

    To me, that's just ludicrous.

m17x R3 base config starts at $1499 and has 460m graphics.... As just one example.

Please, do all laptop enthusiasts on this site a favor and rethink your options. If your budget is $1500 there are PLENTY of other options that are much better performing and will get you a much higher quality machine than an Acer.

IMO, if you're spending north of $600 for an Acer you're doing it wrong.

    5400RPM HDD as well?

I can't believe my eyes. That laptop seriously is a rip off. And it's an Acer.

I think you will find there are plenty of good value acer machines, I don't think this is one of them but your comments are sweeping and uninformed.

This machine is not for gamers, it's for people who want a large machine for multimedia and only want moderate to light gaming performance (and so spending extra on the graphics is silly).

That's why we are trying to persuade him on to something else.

Oh and when my HD5870 arrives, I'll enjoy having similar performance to your NP8130 at a fraction of the price ;)

Acer can be good value. But $1500 for those specs is a bit high IMHO, but not horrible.
