NVIDIA GeForce/Quadro/ION v259.47 WHQL Drivers Released (MS Update)

New NVIDIA graphics drivers from Microsoft Update have been posted! These packages include the NV_WHQL.inf file, which includes native support for all desktop and notebook GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, and 400 series GPUs (and the Quadro equivalents).

* Note: These driver packages do not include an HDMI audio driver, nor do they include PhysX System Software. Use v258.96 WHQL drivers for the latest certified HDMI audio driver and visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_system_software.html for the latest version of the PhysX System Software.*

Version 259.47 is the first release observed to add support for the mainstream GeForce 400 series!

These are MSWHQL drivers from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Much like OEMs, Microsoft maintains their own line of NVIDIA drivers with a global INF that supports many GPUs, both mobile and desktop.

From what I understand, the 259.xx series may actually represent the 260.xx series that was planned for beta release at some point this week. It actually is a bit surprising we are seeing a 259.xx MSWHQL before an official NVIDIA beta release, though both ASUS and Clevo have released 259.xx drivers prior to this release.

Edit: Actually, it appears the beta scheduled for release this week was postponed until Monday, so it's unlikely that this driver is based on the same branch.

So, my GPP(w/ 259) was 8C cooler than with 258, and My 3dmark06 score went up 117 points! I also noticed my fans ran much higher.

While those benchmarks are certainly interesting, I would *really* like to know how the driver affects your Windows Experience Index? After all, the WEI is a perfectly valid and meaningful benchmark.

This driver broke the brightness control in my Vaio FZ with 8400M GT. The display brightness control disappeared from the power options and the Windows Mobility center.

 

Hahaha, please don't! I was just being facetious. The benchmarks you already provided are more than sufficient, while the WEI is unlikely to change. The WEI is a very rough estimate of performance and generally unreliable as a benchmark, so I thought I would "yank your chain", so to speak, for humor.

I actually find these drivers more reliable than 257.41, which would not permit an HDMI connection with my notebook. I have yet to perform any real benchmarks, but so far, they work as they should.

 

Oh My Graphics and Gaming score went up though

 

Once again, initial performance was enough to make me seriously consider these. SC2 ran great for several hours...unfortunately that was sandwiched between total lock-ups runing IE. only once before but 4 times since. Every set of 2xx.xx drivers has had some sort of lock-up/fail with my 8800 GTS. Too bad, because 3dMark and in game performance was much improved. I really wanted to like these drivers. Sticking with 197.45....still.

 

Right after I installed these, I went to Google Chrome and my laptop froze and I had to hold down the power button. It hasn't happened since, but I wonder what caused it?

 

I also ended up uninstalling these after experiencing freezes during youtube videos every few seconds. This was in IE and Firefox.


Edit: The freezing during youtube videos still occurs with older Drivers such as 198.05 so maybe it is related to something else. More likely it is caused by the recent flash update.

The freezing of youtube videos is also occuring on my desktop that as an IGP now and that was also after the recent flash 10.1 update. Disabling hardware acceleration for youtube movies seems to have fixed the issue mostly.

 

I dunno if this is the right place to ask this question .... but does anybody know if Microsoft happen to release similar drivers to ATI GPUs as well ?

 

There is a problem with this driver!! After i installed this gpu driver from MS, my laptop cannot play any videos in youtube anymore. So, I changed back to nvidia's 258.96. Now, everything works fine as usual even when hardware acceraltion is on.

 

Can anyone with the freezing issue point out any specific video that produces this behavior? I am running the 259.41 drivers with the latest version of Adobe Flash (v10.1.82.76), and I cannot reproduce this behavior.

For anyone interested, the beta driver from NVIDIA postponed until yesterday has been further postponed until later on in the week. Some key issues are expected to be resolved with the next release, so stay tuned.

As far as I know, Microsoft only releases updated drivers regularly for NVIDIA cards. ATI/AMD (DAAMIT, though soon to be just DAM... er AMD) has a history for a poor driver release schedule and offering limited support for their mobility products (especially those with graphics switching capability). ATI has maintained a fairly good reputation for their hardware, but if one aspect has always marred their name, it's driver support. However, since they have modified their schedule to release once a month for both desktop and mobility hardware, this may soon change.

 

Well, i used driver sweeper to clean then install the driver from ms. After that, IE8, firefox, chrome, opera could not play any videos from youtube. It said the flash crashed... So I am really not sure what is wrong with the driver.

 

Good thing about this drivers is that they downclock fine on Asus GTX260m on 2d/idle unlike the last MS Update release, the downside is the score is similar to all 25X.XX losing around 300points on 3dmark vs 198.05, so ill pass on this, but my faith on MS Update drivers is back, so looking forward to the new releases

I had no issues with this drivers with the reported flash 10.1 + youtube, all seems fine.

 

If those lost points in 3dmark amount to lost performance in gaming then I can understand why you would not use them otherwise I don't understand.

 

You guys should wait for the 260.XX series, they should be better and will have support for older games too.

 

Well everybody test their own way, all the games i play are DX9, where i still find 3dmark as decent benchmark, i probably should test it more in the games i play, but atm testing 1 or 2 drives a week + installing and redoing the screen calibration routine isnt that fun, so if a driver is behaving better on 3dmark06 ill test it in games.

 

I just watched a YouTube(CJ Dippa) video in Chrome, with the 259 driver.

 

I just tested the new driver with MW2, and I can say it makes my Macbook run MUCH cooler. Instead of the GPU getting into the mid 90C's, it hit a max of 84C, and the case feels much cooler. This is after 40 minutes of game play.

Its one of 2 things:

1. it just makes the GPU run cooler.

2. It makes the fans run faster sooner.

 

No, it was just because you had no run the WEI properly before you re-ran it with new drivers.

A graphic driver only one version newer cant possibly change that score, its way too basic.

 

I had run WEI with 258, then after I updated the driver, it was in gray and I re-ran it.

i'm happy with 195.62.. works perfectly for me.. GPU stays cold and i get CPU acclerated flash videos.

 

I can't say that I agree with your logic. What good is a component that spends most of its time on idle? If you're not gaming, what else is your GPU good for? Rendering the desktop? Folding@Home?

Personally, at the cost of elevated temps, I will take the hardware acceleration of the newer drivers any day (maintaining that the driver lends itself to stability). The GPU is far more efficient for such purposes than the CPU, and I would rather add value to the GPU by accelerating everyday tasks as often as possible. Assuming the component is designed correctly, it should become obsolete before it fails, so why not take advantage of an existing feature?

 

I am really confused to keep this driver or go back to Nvidia one??

 

I just re-installed Windows 7 and the 259 drivers, here's a screen shot of 3dmark06:


I also found out, while my Macbook's CPU hits 97C its only until the fans ramp up(about 15 seconds)to 4500rpm-5500rpm, then they go down to the 80C's.

 

Microsoft pulled this driver with the NV_WHQL inf off the update catalog.

 

With these drivers my nvidia card downclocks itself during 3dmark 06 test even if temps are normal (around 67º C). I can't get it working at full speed.

 

How comes the download link still works then?

 

The download links might be active, but there no listings for this driver with the NV_WHQL inf currently.

 

These drivers don't do much for me, same 3dmark06 score (actually ~200 points less) and same temps.

The original CAB links that I provided still contain the NV_WHQL.inf file. It's just that the Microsoft Update Catalog is no longer showing these links based on the results being provided. Instead, the Catalog is providing re-uploaded versions of 259.47, this time without NV_WHQL.inf.

You can run setup.exe to install the drivers. You may remove UpdatusUser by following the instructions from the link you provided to the NVIDIA forums, but it isn't necessary.

 

Ok removed the update user and service daemon associated
by running the setup.exe on install shield folder with /uninst switch.

 

If anyone needs the drivers, but can't download them, just ask me and I'll upload then. I have both 32 and 64 bit.

 

This driver revision causes my system to randomly freeze, anywhere between 5 minutes and an hour after a reboot while just browsing the web, writing an e-mail, etc... It only seems to happen when it is not running full out. I have yet to have it freeze while I am pushing it to its limit while gaming, even after an hour or two, which seems very odd.

I have no problems with the 258.96 verde version off of nvidia.com.
