Try to find 186.42 one's - they're a few days older than those, but seem to give best performance - including me

    Hello all

Sitting with a problem here. Running XP Home on an Acer 5684WLMI with GeForce Go 7600 graphics card. I followed Chaz uprading Graphics Driver guide and still no luck. 186.81 keeps failing on install. It gives me this message:

    Help please

It shouldn't be like this but I had same problem with 186.82. Load an older (or your current) driver if you've uninstalled it. Go to device manager and choose update driver, then have disk method. Browse to the new driver folder until you get to the .inf file. Click ok, an continue that way. See if this helps.

BTW, .82 is a much better driver than .81 IMO. Others on here seem to agree.

The models of N50's that had better CPU in them, like P8600 recieved only ~100 pts more in 3Dmark06 so the CPU isn't that much of a factor here

Yep! The processor play a low factor in 3DMark06.
If I have 9650M GT(no matter ddr2 or 3), I will overclock like crazy!!! LOL.
DDR2 is the bottleneck! 1000-1500points(3Dmark06) vanished with DDR2 instead of DDR3.

Unless someone proves that 186.82 is tangibly better than 186.81 I'm going to stick with .81 since it's coming straight from Nvidia itself.

Isn't that clear 186.82 is better than 186.81?
A lot of people(check this topic) have report 186.82 or 186.42 is better here.
Moreover, 186.82 is from Nvidia too and it is WHQL certified(Microsoft tested).

186.42 are the best :) I notice better performance even in games, not only in benches :)
I got Zallman 2000NC collerpad so I was thinking about OC'ing by 10 % or so, I also plan to do the cheap ad easy controlled air flow mod to that pad to make it blow into the vents with with bigger force

how do you install the .cab in your computer?? i tried uninstall my current nvidia software, unpack the .cab file and tried used the setup option, but no luck so far.

I had to install the nvidia driver from the nvidia website in order to return my configuration to normal...

You need to unpack .cab just like any other compressed directory. Use 7zip or similar to unpack it.

    186.81 doesn't support the 7 Series. Try 186.82 instead.

I don't understand why so many in this thread are judging the new Nvidia drivers performance based on 3Dmark scores. 3DMark is synthetic and they can tailor it to gain more points with certain drivers. What really matters is real life gaming performance. You could get a lower 3DMark score but still get much better gaming performance.

True.....but there is usually a rough correlation so a 3DMark06 will probably mean better performance. It is never guaranteed the the odds are decent

the clocks on my 260m are fine with the 186.82. I reinstalled vista and was idling at 60-65C w/ the 186.31(I think? I know it was .31) switched over to 186.82 and am idling at 46C

Maybe the 186.31 gives you wrong/unstable PowerMizer setting. This can cause the clockspeed to raise or stay at maximal while idling. Thus, the temperature of the GPU increased.
46C(idle) is a super low temperature for a GPU! Cheer!!! I wish I can have that temperature too.

So how do I install these?? I uninstalled my previous Nvidia drivers, downloaded and unpacked the CAB file, but when I run the setup.exe, it stops before the installation could begin with the error message:

    What could be the problem?

Copy the relevant file with your GPU within a folder of the root back to the root of the driver folder.

Your card probably gets hot a lot due to the powermizer bug some have been experiencing from this where it no longer downclocks after intensive use. Try 186.81.

downloaded and tried to install. It extracted many files and like 4 application files. none would run except for the main driver one.

Still have no powermizer or Nvidia Control Panel. How Do I get those?

This is on a brand new laptop. Asus G60 just bought tonight.

It is usual for a high-end GPU like yours to heat-up to 8XC during gaming.
I see no danger at all.

How did you guys unistall the old driver in order to install a new one?
Is it by selecting NVIDIA DRIVERS? Its a bit big, 3.45GB, so I'm not sure yet...
Because I want to unistall it and do a clean install.

And have anyone tried the 186.82 on a GTX260M or an Asus G51VX yet who can share some thoughts??

    1. Uninstall via control panel (the 3.45GB is incorrect size ignore it)
    2. Restart to Safe Mode
    3. CCleaner, and Driver Remover tool (Forget the name of it)
    4. Restart (with networks off so Windows update doesn't get smart and install some lame version for you) - can also do this in safe mode too.
    5. Install/Restart once more.

That's my usual method, works well I find.

Guys, I can't install 186.81, it says The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit.

I'd like to try 186.81 before going to 186.82.

I didn't install any GPU driver, just installed Windows 7 and I stoped it from updating the graphics card for itself.

    Oh sorry, it's a GXT 260M.

The laptop is P7908u, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits.

I don't know what to do, I want to try this one before 186.82 because of the temperature issues people here have reported. Have just installed Windows 7 without any GPU driver (using none actually) just to get straight to 186.81, but I can't install it.

Did you properly uninstall your previous driver before trying installing the new one? Btw, forget about the 32 bit drivers since your OS is 64 bit.
