Sager NP6165 / Clevo W150ER - XOTIC PC - Sager 15.6" Laptop
It comes with a 1920x1080 screen and the 650M GDDR5. I question as to whether the 650M could handle gaming at those resolutions? -
I doubt it. nVIDIA listed 660m as the minimum to enjoy new games at 1080p with a decent FPS on their slides:
Less demanding games like CoD:MWF3 can be played at 1080p with all on max though.

With all of these numbers... (and sometimes its the more numbers the more difficult the decesion ;p) I am beginning to question slightly what the advantage of going with a Kepler 650M is if the two notebooks in question sport either a 650M Kepler, or a 670M Fermi...
One likes to invest in the new technology, but the price difference is give or take $100 and the 670M outperforms on every level.
(Notebooks are the 6135 and the 9130)
Again thanks for all the info and graphs, im sure you know how hard a decesion this is, as silly as that sounds. -
No, that's not true according to notebookcheck.net:
nVIDIA GeForceGT 650M
"Performance
The gaming performance of the GeForce GT 650M equipped with DDR3 graphics memory lies somewhere in the former 2011 high-end category between the GeForce GTX 460M and GTX 560M. The performance is exceptionally good in shader-heavy DirectX 11 games and benchmarks. However, the 128-Bit memory interface can be a bottleneck if DDR3 graphics memory is employed. Despite the slower core clock of only 735 MHz, the GDDR5-version of the card should be much faster. Demanding games of 2011 like Battlefield 3 will be playable in 1366x768 and medium or high settings. Less demanding games, such as Modern Warfare 3, are easily playable with maxed out settings and 1080p resolution".
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M
Performance
Thanks to the GDDR5-VRAM, the gaming performance of the GeForce GTX 660M is well ahead of the GT 650M DDR3 and on par with the AMD Radeon HD 6950M. Even the older high-end Fermi-GPU GTX 570M is only slightly faster. Therefore, current games as of 2011 should usually run fluently in 1080p resolution and high details. Only a few very demanding games, such as Metro 2033 or Crysis 2, may need reduced graphical settings for smoother gameplay.
However, it doesn't mention the GT 650M GDDR5 version, but I doubt it will be as close to 660M as you say. That would make no sense at all. I will not be entirely sure before we have some official benchmarks, but that's what I think with the current info. -

I would normally agree with you. But NVIDIA has had no issue releasing 5+ versions of the power-sipping 555M to meet OEM needs that cover a broad range of performance metrics. The same thing could happen with the Mid-End 650M. Its right at that Threshold for TDP for a lot of different machines and price points. -
Nvidia does have a GDDR5 version of 650
-
@ TheBluePill
I didn't take that into consideration, but it is a good point.
@ Silverfern
Yes, I know that the GDDR5 version of GT650 exist, I meant that notebookcheck.net didn't mention it in direct comparison with the GTX 660 -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The MSI GE series use the 650 GDDR5.
-
But what about its advantage over the 670M? I think its accurate to say that the 670M outperforms the 650M, but they are priced relatively the same... With that said, im just having a hard time seeing the reason to go with the 650M if it is getting outperformed by a rebadged 5xx card for the same price and possibly a little more power-hungry.
-
-
-
I just cant see why they would release a less powerhungry lesser performing card for a similiar price.

Greater performance in smaller, lighter, cooler packages.
So here a 650 is top dog and will command top price. -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Wait, where are they the same price?
-
The cheaper of the two (6165) is a pound lighter and runs the same innards aside from the 650M in stead of the 670M,
The 9130 is therefore a pound heavier, comes with a heavier PSU brick, but runs the 670M. Aside from that the differences are.... I do not know... so... yes the price difference might be directly related to the GPU. But is it really worth it!!!
Edit: Sure would be nice to get some actual pictures of the 6165. I think the onkyo speakers is also driving the price up for the 9130 model. -
what other notebooks have gt 650m/gtx 660m

Paper specs will tell you that they're the same chips. They differ only in that the 650M will run at 735mhz (core) & 900mhz (ram) and the 660M will run at 835mhz (core) & 1000mhz (ram). There's no magic trick at work. The GK 107 chips used for the GTX 660M are probably higher grade though ; this'll translate in better OCing performance at same voltage / more undervolting potential / etc.
However at stock frequencies we should expect the 660M to be roughly 15% faster (835/735 rounded up), period. -
Yes, I know, but I was talking of a performance comparison... I would love some real world tests, as numbers seldom show the whole picture.

In my opinion these are all pretty huge, the asus g55, msi gaming series, lenovo y580 and samsung series gaming series are all heavy and huge.. I highly doubt we will see the 660m in sub 15 inch notebooks.. I think it certainly requires good cooling
Also the afaik the MSI G60 and G70 feature a 650m GDDR5, atleast from cebit announcements -

There's talk of the up-coming 11" Clevo being equipped with the GT 650M (AND Optimus).
Discussion and speculation here.
But that's beyond the remit of this thread, which is to discuss where the GTX 660M might be found. Which is anything 15.6" or larger, so far. M14x? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
With the low res screen it's likely paired with DDR3.
-
TheBluePill Notebook Nobel Laureate
Getting a 660M in a 11" would be tough.. But, i think if a company was serious about it, they could probably engineer something to work.. Might be loud and a little heavy for an 11".. but i think it could be done.
-
-
Agreed. I'm most curious about the 660m in the m14x. So far nobody seems to know either the TDP of the 660m, or where the info on thermal profile and power consumption will be released first.
As soon as we get that information, it will be pretty easy to see if the gtx 660m is feasible within the existing m14x chassis (assuming no major design changes in the chassis and the m14x r2 follows the m17x r4) or if its totally out of the question.
I would have thought that info would be available by now, considering its necessary information for manufacturers to design their laptops. -
Helllo. I am usually use only Photosho and some other Photo editing software with GL suport. Does CUDA technology make difference for me, or it not my case?

GTX 660M is a 75W GPU. Not a 45W GPU.

Nvidia can go %¤#!## themselves. Seriously this is some BS Nvidia.
GTX 560M is ALSO a 75W GPU. 660M is somewhere between 10-15% faster than 560M.
10-15% increase with same power consumption. I would have applaud you if the 660M was a 45W. But not this. So much for your glorious Kepler. WTH
Atleast the GT 650M is doing great against GT555M so a nice upgrade there but you were too cheap to make a new GPU with more cores with the 660M wasn`t you? You just had to take the cheap and lazy route and just slap on a few megahertz to the cores, just like all the other lazy rebrands you are known for?
Its not even competing against the 560M. Its just sitting there, like a cheap rebrand, like the 670M is to 570M. And now you are going to demand a premium for it over the 560M. What about all the new notebooks that get the "Exciting and brand new Kepler", like the G55 from Asus. "Yes finally its here" thinks one of the G53 owners when they just recieved the brand new G55 they ordered online. But sadly their joy is crushed when they see the disappointing performance increase they paid a premium for.
Well done Nvidia, Well done -
ya thats rediculous. 660m is not worth it at all then. 650m ddr5 better :S

I can't wait for Nissangtr to see this thread and comment.

TDP != power consumption

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!

So utterly sick. Its not like they are even trying for bloody sakes
@Mr MM: I know
I won`t be buying it since we have so many other cheap and good alternatives. I just feel bad for the people jumping on the "OMG the 600 series is here, time to upgrade!". They are tricked and deceived by Nvidia. Especially with 660M. Its the bloody same GPU as 650M, and frankly, performance wise, almost the same as 560M. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah, asus gave up being competitive some time back.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It could be a case of changed turbo thresholds on the chips.
And no it does not = power consumption, this has been shown. -
Keep in mind the 660M's TDP is likely with the GPU boost factored in...
...I hope. -
And yes I`m angry because not only doesn`t Nvidia give a damn, it could mean that its not much room for other Kepler GPUs I had in mind. Not until they have mastered the new architecture and come up with something equivalent to the 480M to 485M we saw.
And no I`m not going to buy the 7970M which I still don`t believe for a second is the 7870. Its a 100W GPU, to hot for my comfort. I would be all over it if it was a 65W like rumored. Instead I am now left with absolutely NOTHING now that AMD only have 100W GCN and Nvidia isn`t even trying with mobile Kepler, atleast not for us who want something between 650M and 7970M. And I was ready to buy a new notebook now on monday, after the launch of Ivy Bridge.
Poof, there goes that plan flying away... -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
there is only one guy that uses TDP = power consumption, NVIDIA
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
-
TDP measurements or TDP specs from the hardware manufacturers isn`t even available for public...
@Meaker: Ok, breath in, breath out, ok all done now. Sorry about my rants
Sorry, thought you meant/I saw, 7870. Yes, I will await 7870M or whatever is taking over for the 570M. But it means more waiting. Darn it -
-
Well for those who are wondering
650m is faster than 560m
it got +10.000 vatange score (which is higher than 560m)
MSI Global ? News
660m is 650m with slight overclock only
Basically you either get tiny laptop with 650m or wait for 680m
Because 650m/670m/675m ARE a total joke lol
However 680m should perform really good when it's out since what they pulled with 650m is quite good for a 40watt GPU -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's not even something to joke about really.....
