Is this card based off the 8600M GS or 8600 M GT?

8600GT. Somebody over at Thinkpad Forums says their T61p scored a 3.7k in 3DMark06.

Its actually a higher end model than the 8600M GT. The 570M has more capabilities and better 3D performance than the 8600M GT card. It has opengl 2.1 too.

Neither. The Quadro was not modeled after the 8x00 cards. The Quadro was developed before the 8x00 series cards.

No matter what, the Quadro series was developed for professional use. It's going to be much better than a 8600m GT on tasks like AutoCAD or modeling, but it won't perform as good in games. Decide what you're going to use the computer for and then choose the GFX card appropriately.
