I was wondering what is the main difference between the Quadro series and the Geforce Series?
Also would a NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M be able to compete with a NVIDIA 9600M GT?

I am no expert, but from what I have read in theses forums and what Lenovo has told me, the Quadro Fx series is aimed more at Cad and 3d applications, use the followig Link for a more in depth comparison; http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html

well, i guess the mobile professional graphics thread should be a good thing to read :

and no , the fx 360m is not a real competitor to the 9600m gt. -

So exactly how well could a NVIDIA 9600M GT do CAD?
-
it would be ok,not stunning, but ok.
but once you are working with an opengl based cad modeller or animation on large assemblies program you would need the opengl acceleration of the professional gpu´s.
for starters cards like the fx 560m or the fx 770m would be ok... -
The FX 360M is based on G86 aka 8400M while the 9600M GT is based on the G96, and will generally be well ahead of the former.

So if I wanted to game and do CAD which card would be the best for me?

I think maybe the FX770M can compete with the 9600M? They are said to have identical clock speeds and cores. Not too sure though.
However, I know the Quadro cards do rule for OpenGL applications and 3D design & rendering. As far as games go, I don't know too many people who relate these mid-range cards to gaming.
The FX360M? Doubt it'll be enjoyable. I am however waiting for someone to give us more info on something about being able to switch Quadro to GeForce drivers for gaming and then switching back to pro-work. -
IIRC,
One of the main differences is usually in the driver, their hardware is pretty similar if not identical in many areas. I remember a few people who had ATI Fire GL cards in their thinkpads who had loaded the X1?00 equivalent drivers and were able to get gaming performance. I'm not sure if this is still the case.
