Which one is better for both high end gaming and Engineering software?
the
NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3600M
or
NVIDIA 8800M GTX
AND what is the ADVANTAGE of the NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3600M over the 8800M GTX?
-
The FX3600m is based on the 8800M GTS. Its gaming performance will be somewhat poorer than the 8800M GTX. It may outperform the 8800M GTX in certain applications due to the Quadro optimized drivers.
-
FX 3600M is based on 8800m GTS, which is approximately 15-25% cut of 8800m GTX. I think FX 3600M has better 3d-model rendering.
-
^^^ what they said.
The Quadro's are great for both gaming (equivalent to their Geforce brother) and great for 3D editing (which Geforce can do, but not as well in OpenGL apps) -
3D Studio Max 2k9 supports DirectX rendering (DX9 and DX10), so it works well with the 8800m GTX. Maya 2k9 doesn't support DirectX (not that I could find), so enabling high detail rendering will yield low frame rates. Maya uses OpenGL.

I know that certain 3D apps, like SolidWorks, requires a Quadro or FireGL card... no way to really get around that if you have a Geforce or Radeon.

i was running solidworks on a 9600xt on my soon to be replaced desktop. I don't think "requires" is quite accurate, though I would imagine there is a performance gain.
-
are you serious? I cannot even run those applications with a Geforce card? I thought they are just not optimized for 3d rendering apps, but they are not supported at all?
-
I mean for professional use, SolidWorks will be better with a OpenGL videocard (Quadro or FireGL).... for multiple windows open.
you can only do a single window if you are using a consumer level card... which is not efficient when you are doing multiple 3D edits. -
@Brendon, it is not required to run solidworks, but is required to run certain features, ie "realview"
-
You can run those apps, but it won't run as well or have certain features that a OpenGL tweaked card (Quadro or FireGL) can do.
Most apps will let you use a consumer level card, but some (like SolidWorks) will want an OpenGL card (Quadro/FireGL)
Here is a SolidWorks requirements page:
