I’m trying to make a final decision on buying a Dell laptop right now. I’m primarily using it for internet access, photoshop, illustrator, Rhino3D, and potentially solidworks at some point. I won’t be doing any gaming on it, and I’m trying to determine which card would be better for a CAD and 3D modeling standpoint. I want to stress that I don’t expect this to perform like a dedicated workstation laptop like an M65, I just want something that might be somewhat usable for 3D programs.
I’m between purchasing a Vostros 1400 with a 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS card, or a Latitude 620 with a 512MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache card. I’ve searched on the Quadro NVS card on this site, and most opinions are that it is more suited for Business aps and 2D CAD, and NOT good for gaming. I also read that it is equivalent to an Nvidia GeForce 7400.
My question then, is will the NVS be better suited for 3D aps, or would the GeForce 8400 be a better choice? I know that neither of these are an Open GL and are not optimized for 3D, I’m just trying to see if I can find a card that will “get by”. If I really NEED a dedicated 3D comp with a true GL card at some point I’ll buy that. Right now I’d be using this laptop purely to experiment with the software.

Both will be about equal for modeling. I would go with the Latitude just because it is a better laptop than the vostro.
NVIDIA® GeForce? 8400M GS or NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M for 3D modeling?
