From reading around on the site, I see that it is possible to upgrade laptop graphics if your computer is MXM compatible. Mine appears to be based on the MXM-Upgrade website that someone linked to. Toshiba is absolutely no help here. It appears as though NVidia only sells the chipsets and the OEMs actually build the boards. That being the case is it safe to assume that if Toshiba won't sell me the board I won't be finding it elsewhere?

you looking for board or gpu, specifically?
-
Contact Ice-Tea on these forums, but you might need a motherboard upgrade as well since most 8800m GTX laptops have different motherboards thanks to the new video card.

I'm looking for the board. I have the PM965 chipset and motherboard in the computer and I believe I've seen that board used with the 8800M but I can't say that for 100%. Looking at what Toshiba has on the market currently, I see nothing with anything newer than the 8700M in their lineup so I might be beating a dead horse here. Even the newest SLi models they're selling are dual 8600's.
I'll PM Ice-Tea and see what he thinks, appreciate the help. -

here's his webpage. or i think it's his webpage. nonetheless, some info that will give some insight to mxm.

if there's even a board that will fit the 8800.

That page is where I learned that my computer is indeed MXM compatible.......and you can custom build 8800M-GTX equipped laptops on some of the websites out there (ibuypower.com for instance has the Batallion M570RU with it) so I know the chipset is on mobile cards, my issue is trying to find one with the Toshiba architecture.
Thanks again for the help. -
Its not the mobile chipset that will determine if your notebook has a MXM slot.
The Clevo M570RU (aka. Sager 5793, batallion M570RU, etc.) you were referring to is special.
It is one of two notebook models on the market that were the first to have MXM-IV.... I know, I confirmed it and has Ice-Tea (of MXM-Upgrade) update his site.
The MXM Type IV notebooks can house up to 8800M GTX... and about to support 9800M GTS/GTX when its released this summer.
please read my Clevo Guide to get better informed about Clevo.
(Note: I am working on a new updated guide... sneak peek here)
The Toshiba does NOT seem to have a standard MXM Type... so upgrades are not possible for it. Sorry.
Toshiba notebooks have never really been considered high-end, as well as their designs for future upgrades for videocards.
Clevo has been in the "high-end boutique brand notebook" market for a while now...
- First to put desktop CPU into notebook
- First to put SLI into a notebook (M590K)
- First to put a dual-core CPU into a notebook (D900K... mine)
- First to put a quad-core CPU into a notebook (D901C)
- First to have RAID-5 (3 internal HDD) ..... (D901C)
- First to have a DDR3 notebook ..... (upcoming M860TU - 15.4" w/ Montevina & 9800M) -
Good info to have, thanks.
What I meant was that I know the GPU chipset isn't mated to a specific card but is rather sold to the OEMs who then mount it on a card of their own design physically.
I learned from reading the MXM site how to determine if my Toshiba is PCI express capable and it is. That is why I assumed I should be able to locate a card to upgrade it. Maybe I am reading the MXM website incorrectly?
At any rate, it's running along fine now with the 8700 OC'd so I'm not going to lose any sleep if I can't do it. Was mostly just looking for something to occupy my time out here. -
The Toshiba specs shows that you cannot upgrade to another card since the slot within (if MXM) is not past Type III... which is limited to 35w TDP cards.
And the 8700M is the only one at the moment.
The 8800M cards have a higher TDP and needs at least a MXM Type HE or IV -
Roger, thanks.
