    Hey guys,

just re-installed neverwinternights after a long while and i instantly fell in love with the game play and story of this game, graphics still look good after so many years......but alot of you will know this already......so why the topic? Well baldarsgate was the first real rpg i played on the pc and it was simply brilliant, a classic in its own right.....so then does NWN stack up against baldarsgate i see simularities between the too........

which of these two deserves the title of a classic, which did you most enjoy....

im looking forward to running through NWN with my friend in co-op mode....

I would disagree. NWN was a good game, but not a classic close to the level of Baldur's Gate.

There wasn't the charisma (from the NPC's both playable and non-playable) that you felt. You didn't empathize with the antagonists and the story just wasn't as epic. Each NPC in Baldur's gate had an extensive backstory and personality. In NWN you got a couple lines from the NPC you chose on the final level.

Maybe the expansions made NWN much better, but I never bothered with them.

Plus it didn't have Boo! Space Hamsters FTW!

The expansions ramped the game up several orders of magnitude in epicness. NWN + expansions is a completely new animal. I still don't know how it stacks up to Baldur's Gate, though, as I've never played that.

The original campaign of NWN was not very good and the fact that it was Bioware's first game following Baldur's Gate 2 made it look even worse. The expansions were better -- Hordes of the Underdark was of the same quality as Throne of Bhaal (although it was a good deal shorter).

However, what really made NWN great were the mods. There is something on the order of 1000 of them out there and they come in all varieties, ranging from a few hours of play to campaigns that are longer than the official expansions. As with most things in the world, 90% of them are probably not worth it, but that still leaves around 100 that are pretty awesome. The NWNVault (place where they're stored) has a rating system which does a decent job of ranking them.

i think they tried to do too much with NWN. the expansions and community mods were pretty good but by then a lot of other quality titles were already out in the market. maybe they tried to make a game with extensive community support like the original half life but yeah i liked NWN 2 a lot more. i would consider it a classic simply because there aren't nearly enough quality RPG's consistently coming out for the PC to say otherwise. when i first played fallout 1 i sure as hell didnt think it would end up being considered one of best rpgs of all time but when looking back and comparing it to more recent RPG's i would say without doubt it's a PC classic.

i think BioWare is heading in the right direction with games like Mass Effect where it's evident their efforts went into the game itself and not the be-all toolset they had for original NWN.

But the greatest charm of NWN (and NWN2 for that matter) is the toolset. Have you ever had the chance to play in a persistent world?

i like the toolset and the community mods but i'd rather have a really good game isntead if i had to choose. maybe it's my personal bias against tile based toolsets. would be nice to have both though..

I was very disappointed with NWN. It was too much style over substance. NWN2 was a bit better and Storm of Zehir recaptured some of Baldur's Gate\IWD. Dragon Age looks like it will be the best of both worlds.

Style over substance? You mean the customization of the characters was not enough? Or is it story-wise where it was not so good? Personally I think the expansions gave the game a big new breath, especially when telling the story, which the original game lacked a bit.

I was a DM of a server running a heavily modified version of Nordock, so yer i'd say the game was pretty good :p. One thing i did note is iv'e never finished the single player campaign as i found it quite boring, but find a good server with a good mod and active DMs and the game really comes into its own.

Just to show you the scope of the game and toolset its actually being used to teach kids maths.

No it wasn't. Like the previous poster says, the original game was boring, especially compared to BG2. They were too bothered about making it 3d and not concentrating on the gameplay. NWN was a good game, but not a classic like BG2.

I personally think Bioware is headed in the right direction by "Going Back" to what an RPG should be !

    Dragon Age:Origins !

The Baldurs Gate series is probably stronger on storyline and plot, but 3rd edition rules for NWN aren't half bad and the sheer number of modules, mods and other free downloadable content makes the first NWN trilogy a great series in its own right.

I did not buy NWN2 for two reasons, one was the extremely high system requirements for the time which went against a purchase and the gameplay changes which others in the NWN community disliked compared to the original.

of course NWN is a classic... sure baldurs gate was good.. but ahts only a classic to some people because its old to them. I still play some real RPG classics that were very old when BG first came out :p (and love them)

well thats true but i think baldarsgate took the gender in a different direction, im mean there where some great rpg's around before it but where they gender defining rpg's?
Games that stood out above the rest, games that people aways go back to and say well it wasnt as good as say xxxx now that was a really good rpg.......

hmmm i agree with you, not everyone likes baldarsgate when i first brought it i put it in and then took it out half an hr later.....didnt play it until 2years later and then i really saw what a masterpiece it was, and then to back that up with baldarsgate2 which was equally as good if not better was huge.

i think you meant to say genre lol. i agree on the part where you have go back and play the game again to fully appreciate how good it is. i think it's especially true older games like bg when 2d gaming was at its peak.

I would put both of them in the classics, BG in the first gen and NWN in the second generation classics.
