Hey guys, I installed Battlefield Bad Company 2 on my laptop. I have the Asus N61VG with Nvidia Geforce GT220M Cuda 1GB Graphics Card.

Now, Im struggling to get a smooth game play, this is the following I have done so far to make BFBC2 run as fast as it can get:

    • Download the latest drivers from Nvidia website
    • Set all the settings to High Performance (all options OFF eg Vertical Sync, AA, etc)
    • Used this guide which is BFBC2 specific, http://www.fragcast.org/?p=433 which really helped me, I could see a huge difference in performance!
Can you suggest anything else I can do?

    I am running Windows 7 64bit.

Overclock the CPU. I hear that this game needs CPU power that's why it recommends a quad.

Overclock your cpu & gpu, if you cant reduce game system demand any further the only thing left is to increase system performance.

Make sure you set in game stuff to "low" I hear it looks about the same but is a lot easier to render.

Try dropping shadow/lighting related settings lower.

ALL my settings are on LOW too.

Any BFBC2 hardcore gamers out there which might know about more tweaking the game settings? :)

Look for gossamer's launcher for BFBC2. It allows access to some settings not available ingame.

On all low settings, 1600x900, my G72 averages 48FPS on a full Atacama Desert map. (Max settings average 27FPS)

I'm not to sure you'll reach perfectly smooth game play, as your 220M is not even half as powerful as a 260m GTX.

Try searching for some tweak options, like myxcon suggested. There might not be a whole lot you can do though. It's a pretty demanding game.

Force everything to use DX9 by editing the settings.ini in the MyDocuments, BFBC2 folder.

Hi Myxcon, thank you I didnt know about that launcher.

I downloaded it, but still, alll the options that Ive changed in the settings.ini file myself with notepad, was all the same on the launcher, only in a GUI :) But thanx anyway, appreciate for replying.

I think that is all I can do for now... I can actually play BFBC2, its not 100% smooth but I would say it is playable.

How do I check my FPS ?

    www.fraps.com

The free version shows your FPS, takes screenshots, and has limited video recording.

Eeeeeek. My FPS are 20! Horrible. lol :) Playable, but not recommended, BFBC2 requires alot of resources!

I thought the GT220M 1GB Cuda was bad, but not this bad lol

I can play Battelfield 2 on all high settings though!

Thanks guys, guess I will have to buy another laptop! hehe ...now only thing I should do is win the lotto... hmmm...

The GT220M 1GB isn't exactly a performer. Err, the CUDA name really doesn't mean anything either.

You know the GT 220M is really a rebadged 9600M GT GDDR3, not the best but not that bad for a laptop still.

Forcing DX9 in the settings.ini file in your BC2 my documents folder should boost your FPS a bit. At least it does for everyone else.

Thats because fraps decreases your performance. Your actual fps should be around 30fps

No it doesn't. Taking video, with FRAPS or any other program, will decrease your FPS.

But running the FPS monitor, even doing a log benchmark, will NOT reduce your in game FPS. Same with the Xfire FPS tool.

    >.> that's 100% correct not why people even think that still. My 9600m gt overclocked to 9700m gt clocks and a 2.6ghz processor really didn't have any problems playing the beta and I heard the performance was increased later on. Try a different driver and overclock your gpu.

What is the best, easiest way to overclock my GPU? There are SO many threads about overclocking, can you direct me in the right direction and be more specific?

Ziddy123 - Yes I have changed the settings, most performance I got was when I changed Direct X to 9, MUCH smoother as it was. :)

Actually its something like a 9600M GS and it doesn't support PhysX unlike 9600M GT...

You can download and use NVDIA system tools 6.05 to overclock GPU... its very simple to do so... but first get the 195.62 drivers.

With Shadow on Medium, texture on Medium and turning off HBAO and with Bloom off in the settings.ini I expect you should have flawless performance.

I was talking to an online buddy first time in a while. Reason, his old laptop crapped out and he bought a new one.

He bought the Asus G72 with the GTX260 with 1600*900 resolution with 6GB of Ram and 500GB of HDD, but he had a spare 500GB so now has 1TB of space. It came with an i7 I believe also.

From Best Buy he paid $1,000.

May want to consider that also.

Asus G73 is your best bet... you can get it for about 1300 pounds without VAT if u order it from online US pc retailer.. like gentechpc.com or xoticpc.com... or if u want it immediately , there this ebay retailer which sells it for 1750 but its X1 version ... if u wait till next week , u can get A1 version which is better since it has blue ray and other freebies... here's the link if u really want it... alternative is Sager NP8690 whcih u can get on kobaltcomputers.co.uk which is about 1300... with VAT i think... these are way better than N61 and should max all games... at full HD res... and both come with ATI 5870...

Thank you Sean and Ziddy. Il have a look into what u mentioned. For the time being Id have to stick out with my N61, trying to sell it at the moment to a friend or so :) Thanx guys.

EDIT: Downloading Nvidia System Tools to overclock now to see if I could actually see a difference...

SEAN, I have overclocked a little bit. Havent done 3D Mark Benchmark, but in my Windows Experience Score thingie, I had 5.3. Now I have 5.7.

I tested BFBC2, but still FPS is the same, might be slightly faster but you can hardly see any difference. :(

Oh well, now I have tested everyhing I can - I guess its time to buy something new! Anyone interested in buying my laptop in the UK? :) lol

WEI is quite useless... u have to look at a proffesional benchmark like 3D Mark Vantage or 3DMark 06... my WEI score for gaming is 2.6 but still my GPU isn't crap.. i still got 5K 3D Mark 06 score... which is what u wouldn't get with 2.6 WEI...

Now for selling it , u can try on ebay or notebookreview.com marketplace...

My WEI score is 5.6 because I have the fastest HDD possible for a laptop. I have to spend lots more to increase it to get an SSD. WEI is a weird way to calculate a computer's hardware.

Hi Guys! Im back, I took my Asus N61V back to the shop, as the owner was very professional and polite, he let me just pay a bit extra, and gave me a brand new Asus N61J with the i7-CPU, ATI HD 5730 1GB and a big 640GB hard drive. The screen looks sooo nice, and this baby also supports USB 3.0 :)

Ok, now Im back at the start again.

ATI graphics drivers 1) Where do I get the latest graphics drivers? I clicked on ATI link (Check for driver updates) and they took me to the Asus support website. I am use to Nvidia website for nvidia cards, is there something similiar for ATI Radeon?

    2) Can I overclock as well (as easy as the Nvidia system tools). I wont yet, first gonna run BFBC2 and see what I get, still busy installing now!

    3) I know its prob not important but my Windows Score on Vista is 5.9 now standard.

EDIT: I found one... ! :) Any other you can suggest or know of? 1) http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5944505&postcount=270

The ATI site has drivers, but I checked for mobility radeon drivers and they don't have anything for the 5xxx series so I'd get them from Asus support site.

For overclocking, I have ATI overdrive for my 4xxx series desktop radeon, so I'm guessing their is something similar for the mobility radeon. I wouldn't think you'd need to overclock much. Very nice laptop (res is a bit low for my taste :p).

If it doesn't run BC2 steady at higher settings, something isn't right!

Get the latest ATI drivers here: http://sites.amd.com/us/underground/tips/Pages/catalyst-10-3-preview.aspx (newer than the ASUS ones)

For overclocking, look at this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-GPU-Clock-Tool-v0.9.26.0-For-HD-5870-download-2383.html

5.9 is the max with spinning drives. Look at the sub-scores (as little as they're relatively worth). For example, my machine has a 6.8 in everything except the hard drive score, so mine also has an overall of 5.9 but I'd wager that it's a little bit faster than the Asus you've got ;)

Hi guys! I am well impressed indeed! :) I havent checked my FPS yet, but gameplay is MUUUUCH smoother! I played BFBC2 on Med settings, without any changing anything in the settings.ini file. And that is great! Il post the FPS as soon as I get the chance.

What Ive done now is copy and paste my old BFBC2 folder, so Im playing with the settings of my previous setup, and its SUPER FAST! :) Im even playing better now and improving my stats, and its much more fun! :)

I think the i7 Core processor plays a huge role in my performance too.

also the 5730 is way faster... anyways what is the native resolution of N61J?

Also if u can , try getting it swapped for Asus G73 and pay more cash... it would 5 times better.

1366x768 screen resolution. I miss the 1680 res from my previous G50, but I guess its nothing too serious :)

Nah, the G73 is double the price lol If I had the money I would defintely get it, but I am happy with my N61J :)

Hey guys! Lol I dont think I ever have swopped so many laptops at one stage.

As you know I bought the Asus N61VQ, then took it back, upgraded to the Asus N61JQ-JX021V, very happy with it, but discovered a dead pixel on my screen! Oh no, Asus! Didnt expect that!

But all well, Im taking it back next week, for a swop, but the guy said if he has the Asus N61JQ-JX021V in stock, I can always just pay in a little bit more and he could give me that 17" version :) I would love the screen resolution more cos it goes up to 1600x900 and also it has a 1TB hdd (not that big differenece from my 640GB I have now).

    Currently have this laptop: http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=N61JQ-JX021V
Maybe have this one soon: http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=N71JQ-TY013V

Just thought Id share with you guys :)
