Sweet, got my beta key. Signed up for this a while back, but never heard anything from them since.

Downloading now and it's about 1.5GB.
Is this public beta? Can we post screenshots/footages?

You don't need to pay. There's a "no thanks" button after registering and you still get a key.

Been playing for the past couple hours; Thanks for the heads up. It runs really well on my 7805U. I'm going to go into the terms and see if I can make a review, if not I'll probably still make a review but more on the down-low.

One of the issues I keep having is that it'll crash when heading to the safehouse.

Usually beta's are pretty open, its the Alpha's that typically have huge NDA's associated with them. Like the current WoW Cataclsm alpha and all the leaks that got shut down.

Actually it's more like Split Second and Blur than NFS Shift. Which kinda sucks. The power-ups are kiddish and being able to destroy the environment to wreck other racers is a copy cat off Split Second.

The cars handle way too arcadey for my tastes. They are way more arcade-like than other NFS games and as far as I can tell you can't tune your car.

If anything this game needs to be more like Shift. Realistic street + tracking racing in an NFS game would be boss.

I played about an hour this morning, so here are some first impressions:

*You need an EA account to log in and play the beta, so in theory, you can download and play on any computer with that same account

*The beta is quite solid, I haven't run into any technical problems or glitches. However, it does have performance issues, frame rate sometimes drops for no apparent reason; it seems like frame rate is capped at 30FPS (probably for balance); it's still in beta, so expect some performance improvement at official launch

*The game plays and feels exactly like NFS: Most Wanted, which is a great news to people who hated ProStreet or Shift. And if you are into serious sim racing, then forget about NFS: World, because it's really cater toward to the arcade racing crowd.

*UI is really clean and sleek, you can move around/enlarge world map and chat box anywhere on the screen.

*There are cops roaming around the map and they behave exactly the same way as they did in NFS: Most Wanted, they will ram you, road block you, spike strip you until you are caught

*Graphics isn't quite impressive, it's on par with NFS: Most Wanted, feels outdated

*There are many powers to unlock and use during race, besides the infamous Nitrous boost, like emergency evade, which blows cop cars away from you if you are getting boxed.

Bottom line - it's NFS: Most Wanted at its core, with MMO element added

Im sorry but how could they have copied an idea from a game that was just released half a month ago. And really the idea of using the environment to kill another car/racer is not a "new" concept by any means.

Need For Speed: World Review [Written Portion]

Need For Speed: World is a solid and seemingly simplistic MMO Racing Game and since grabbing my invite from Fileplanet. I have put countless hours into a game that feels like a thrilling buzz until you comedown and realize that it wasn't worth the effort. NFS: World has the lack of depth and storyline that is seen throughout most MMORG, or MMOG in general, but what had me taken-back was the simplistic number of options. Some people may enjoy a game where there are only eight menus through out the entire exploration view but to me it felt like there was a lack of ways for the user to interface with their character and/or car. The UI felt sleek but dumbed down, the best way I could describe it would be that it was made by people who expected their target audience to be 10 and under.

Gameplay: NFS: World takes elements from its bigger brothers. The most notable is Most Wanted. Which defines the way you interact with objects, other vehicles, and police in game. A variety of power-ups are available to you during every aspect of gameplay. There are four power up menus that are catered to the three different in game modes. As you increase in level you will be able to unlock more cars and abilities. The abilities are specialized for each different mode but leave much to be desired after a certain level.

Racing and Pursuit: While the game play feels solid and polished. Racing is more equivalent to throwing darts sideways and hoping they will turn left. Even on cars with greater handling going at moderate speeds the racing feels either dull or like continuous kicks to the stomach. My subject view of this is that it is not so bad; I enjoy sharp turn racing; but seasoned vets of racing simulations will find this game to flamboyant and undesirable. That and the limited amount of races even for higher levels will turn some players off the game.

I'm a guy who likes to break the law by driving recklessly and as such most of my the time I've spent in game has been in Pursuit. You start pursuit mode by ramming into the back of a police vehicle, from what I've gathered there is pretty much a free rein on what you're allowed to run into as long as you don't hit a cop and influence a chase. When pursuit mode begins you're in heat level 1 until you disable two cops are cause $25 thousand dollars of damage. You can rack up more reputation points by getting to higher heat levels. The most cops chasing you the higher your payout will be. The more cops you disable the higher your reputation will be. You can also tag a police car by bumping into it. The more cops you tag the higher both your rep and payout will become. When you reach heat level 3 you will start to notice barricade. You have to choices here that is to either try and avoid the barricade or pile drive your way through a cop car. If I had to give you a tip it would be to always keep a bunch of Juggernaut power-ups. It will allow you to ram right through them.

During my time with these modes I've learned that one to three of the AI cars will actually be somewhat intelligent. They will take back-roads, cut you off in traffic, and do whatever is necessary to catch you or beat you. You should definitely watch out for these cars because they will also teach you things if you pay attention.

Exploration and Multiplayer: The first thing I do when I get an open world racing game is to go around the world and find little tricks that will help me in the long run. For this game I didn't feel the need to because all the beginning races were in a tiny section on the map. I went through that section a dozen times and still missed some of the secret pathways; don't be afraid to run into stuff that looks like it might be breakable. That being said there is no real selling point to exploration mode. Besides the limited interaction with friends and the chaos rampages you can go on by crashing into AI cars.

Sadly I've not been able to experience a real multiplayer race. Every time I try to join one it always disconnects me during the loading menu. I can say that the other elements of multiplayer are much like they are in every MMO game I've played. You have a chat menu at the bottom of the screen, when right clicking on another person's car you have the ability to bring of up their user profile or add them as a friend. I would have liked to see a more unique arcade racing menu where you can bump into the back of their cars to submit a one of one sprint challenge, or right click to challenge them on a set course. Sadly the interaction between you and your friends will feel like nothing more than chatting.

Customization: To me the biggest part of a racing game is customization. I play horrid racing games for the ability to customize every aspect of my car, and here is where NFS: World has been the biggest letdown. When a free MMORG [Project Torque] can out-do you in customization you know that you have a horrible system. NFS: World provides users with the ability to paint and add decals to their cars. That is where the system ends. There are no modifications to the parts a car can use, there are no body-kits, just paint and decals.

The saving grace here is that they allow you to paint every piece of your car separately. Which means that a player's car can still feel unique.

I believe I said it best when I said this game was dumbed down and simplistic. The condensed game play and Direct X 9 graphics makes this feel like just another wretched online racing game.

    Game Play: 5
    Graphics: 6
    Customization: 4
    Storyline: N/A
    Features: 4
    Total: 19/50 D-

Replay Value: Beta Game [Always Replayed]

Racing is way too easy. I don't even have to break for anything less than a 60 degree turn (maybe more). Like others have mentioned, it's a little too arcade-y. I also don't like how races are started. Often you'll see a bunch of cars in the same spot, merged together, waiting for the race, in the middle of the road. Also experienced a ton of pop outs/ins.

Yeah, I was kinda annoyed by that fact that a car could take a 90-degree turn at 120MPH as if it had gorilla glue tires.

Braking for turns in NFS World? Not needed. And yeah, pop ins and pop outs, it's a beta so hopefully that will be fixed. But the driving, eh, I'm not so sure EA will change that...

Honestly i feel this is less of a "beta" and more of a prerelease demo labeled as a beta to create hype. Alot of games have been doing this sort of thing lately.

Hmm, I loved Shift, and am currently downloading the beta, but am now not quite as excited ha... IMO, they nailed the gameplay in Shift, and I was excited this might have been that game, with street driving added, cops, and multiplayer... that would have been my ideal World game... this sounds like I need to bring my bag of quarters and keep the pedal to the floor and bounce off the walls.... very sad

Still gonna try it, but sounds like it's not my cup of tea. I do also love the RACE series and Forza and Gran Turismo.... not overly hard to please, maybe I'll be pleasantly suprised.

EDIT: I do also really enjoy the FLATOUT/BURNOUT games, but in my opinion, ever since I played the very first Need For Speed, it was a step above the pure arcade racers. I still remember having a ball with the 911 on Willow Springs back in the days of DOS

Yes, all NFS have been arcade type rather than sims. But this is way more arcadey than NFS games of the past and quite frankly it sucks.

    Shame. It had such potential.

well, just tried it out for half hour or so, and as mentioned above, this one sucks... very disappointing, as they've proven they can make a great game. This one is so watered down and bland that there's no point in my opinion... I have WAY better cop chases in a Grand Theft Auto game, and just about every other racing game is better... very sad this one sucks so bad... and gotta say, when I don't even wanna bother playing a free game beta, things are bad ha

Forgive me for I have not played this series since Underground 2.... What has happened to the series? I fully understand that with time things change, and you can't keep pushing out the same material. But this doesn't feel anything like the first 2. :/

Who the heck plays a racing game with a keyboard? You are missing out.

If anything this game needs to have elements from Underground, Most Wanted and Shift. Not the super crappy arcade game it is now with kiddie like power-ups and skill system.

I play racing games with my keyboard; Hell, I play CS:S Surf with a touchpad. Some people don't feel the need to purchase desktop wheels that they may only need onces so it falls back on that old saying: "If there's a will, there's a way."

I agree with you though, there needs to be elements pull from a wider verity of games, instead it feels like a mix between Most Wanted and Burnout.

I was just informed they will be adding a bunch of customization options soon. I'm excited!

Actually nfs most wanted was one of my favorite racing games. It was so fun playing on lan with friends !
With good cars and the feel of adrenaline when u got into ~300 km/h it was one hell of an experience ! looking forward to it.
