Impressions:
The controls are pretty tight. I know it's by no means "realistic," but the NFS series never has been and (IMO) it's an asset that this controls really well with just the keyboard. If you're looking for a serious racing sim, there's always X Motor.
Performance is a bit of a bear. I can set the one and only video slider (sigh) to "maximum" at 1920x1080 on my HD4870 and get playable frame rates, but only just. I'm sure my U30Jc would weep at the thought. Still, it's exceptionally pretty - so pretty that with a little anti-aliasing, I think racing games have reached the "if it gets any prettier it's going to be more realistic than reality" stage. Then again I probably said the same thing about Most Wanted back in the day, and now it looks quite dated.
Anyways, it's obvious they were trying to re-capture the feel of NFS:MW, which remains (again, IMO) the best game in the series thus far (particularly evident in the fact that some sections of NFS:W's unnamed city are suspiciously similar to NFS:MW's Rockport). In the end though, it seems to have more closely captured the feel of NFS:Carbon - you know, Most Wanted's markedly inferior sequel? My biggest problem is that in the brief hour or so I played, I couldn't find anything to do. I just drove around and crashed into cops and started chases (which are still fun, but lack some of the destructive possibilities of Most Wanted's). I couldn't find any, you know, races to take part in. Maybe I'm just really unobservant?
The MMO aspect is intriguing, and really - for either free (capped at level 10) or $20 (for the whole game) and free to play, I wouldn't really expect anything world-beating. I might pick it up. Err, if I can find some actual races, that is. -
Open the map [M] and you should see race markers. Multiplayer races don't work yet. Your computer should have killed the game, and if you're talking about frames per second it seems that the game is capped at 30FPS. Which is a bit low for me. I play on Maximum @ 1440x900 on my Gateway P-7805u FX laptop.

I played it for 20 mins and i got bored of it. I know this is a beta but so far the game sucks and its boring. The driving and handling feels too much arcadely way more than the previous NFS games.
So far its a F -

The official Xbox 360 wired controller from Microsoft makes a great PC gaming pad...I suggest you go with that one.

I don't like how arcady this one is, but I really hated Shift. As I said in my review; I'm not a big Racing Simulation fan. I think it would have been cool if they did a Semi-Simulation though. Something more along the lines of: Project Gotham Racing, Test Drive Unlimited, and Forza Motorsport with loads of customization options.

Played it didn't like it at all.
I'll stick with blur. -
