So, I've been away from computer games for a while now, because I needed to finish up school and because my 7 year old Dell desktop couldn't handle much. I'm looking to get into a couple different good games following the arrival of my new M17x. I was hoping to get a couple suggestions.

Right now, the only game I brought with me to download on my new computer is UT3. As for games I like, I've played all genres of games, and each has their own set of perks. From WoW to Command and Conquer to TFC to Heroes of Might and Magic, I like almost any genre you can think of. I really only have one stipulation: I don't like games set in reality.. if that makes any sense. For example, Medal of Honor... not for me. Anything that involves war or spies or anything like that, I don't like it. Now, if it has aliens or deals with space or even dragons or anything fantasy or futuristic, or just non-real, I'm willing to try it.

I was looking at Prototype, Diablo 2/3, and Red Faction: Guerilla, but I don't know where else to look. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Crysis is going to be a must for you. Also take a look at Fallout 3, I didn't enjoy it much, but you might have better luck.

Because, you getting the new M17x, most likely being about to get really high settings. It also suits the sci-fi fps aspect that you like,

i hate crysis. yes, it looks a pretty, but the story was limp to say the least. took me less than 2 days to finish and bored me stupid. last time im ever buying a game full price!

quake live is good fun. its basiclly quake 3 but online and slightly improved all round. not a graphical game, but still masses of fun. and its free.
FEAR is good, im really enjoying it so far. theres also FEAR 2 which has recently come out, but i think playing fear 1 + expansions first will help.

not sure if its your type of thing, but GTA IV or san andreas could be worth looking at. from what ive read IV needs a pretty special computer to run it, but san andreas runs beautifully on my low end laptop. plus san andreas is dirt cheap now. i got my copy for £4 i think :D.

mirrors edge could be worth looking at. beautiful game, and a good concept. bit short on the story line, but the time trials are entertaining, especially if you can get a good frame rate (something that i struggle with)

price of persia could be worth a look, along with tomb raider if you like that kinda thing.
silent hill, resi evil, and dead space would be good if you like horror/zombie games.

    hope that helps.

I would highly recommend Crysis, or if you like more run and gun and less stealth try the newer one, Crysis Warhead, both are great. Another game you might enjoy would be Mass Effect. Its an action RPG from Bioware in a space setting, kind of a cross between halo and star trek I suppose. You are in third person camera but have free aim and a cover system and that sort of thing. It has a pretty good story and I quite liked.

If you like fantasy type games you might like the upcoming RPG from Bioware, Dragonage: Origins. There is also The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion from Bethesda. It is a little older but the graphics are still on par with just about any game at the moment, there are also tons of mods. It is also a action oriented RPG, set in a fantasy setting, with ogres and goblins and at least one dragon in the main storyline : ) Fallout 3 as previously recommended is also great, its made by Bethesda as well.

Another game I would highly recommend would be The Witcher. A bit of a weird title I know but don't judge a book by its cover ^^. You are essentially a monster slayer, so there are tons of strange monsters to fight, the combat is neat and the story is fantastic.

I would recommend you check them out on ign.com first, you might get really interested in some of them or decide its just not for you. Always best to watch a couple trailers and read reviews before buying : )

Mass Effect, Bioshock, and Dead Space are all great options.

i agree with the others that suggested Crysis. also, i suggest any MMO, such as CoD4, simply because the m17x should be able to run at good frame rates (better than most laptops at least), although the people that are hardcore gamers playing on their powerful desktops will still have better frame rates.

CoD 4 isn't an MMO, and plus, the OP didn't want war or reality themed games in general. I think this is less about benchmarking his m17x and more on just playing games the way they are meant to to be played (with decent fps), something that his 7 year old Dell couldn't do.

Bioshock is a good recommendation, as is Mass Effect and maybe even The Witcher.

I'm shocked no one has said Half Life 2 (and the episodes) yet... Just get the orange box, comes with all the HL2 games, TF2, and portal for like $30. It's the most fun I've ever had with a FPS.

Starcraft two is likely to debut soon, that's going to be a must for any RTS fan.

Assassins creed is pretty entertaining, and the sequel is coming shortly.

Sandbox games might qualify for non-reality. Which makes Prototype a definite. Saints Row might be another possibility, if you count the sheer ridiculousness of its scenarios and missions as unrealistic. GTA4 might as well. I mean, you don't get rid of a wanted level that easily in real life.

So far I've seen a lot of suggestions for shooters or MMOs. How about some other genres? The graphics are probably out of date, but some of the acrobatic stuff you could do in the Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy were just amazing. Of course there's always the new PoP.

You definitely should get DMC4. I have it on my computer and the graphics look really nice. Not too realistic (infinite ammo with basically no need to reload, magical weapons, demons, etc etc) and great fun. On that note, you should probably also get DMC3 if it manages to run properly. Yeah, it's a really old game and the graphics look like they came right out of one of the earlier RE games, but imo, the story and music are better than in 4.

    The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion!

Shocked how nobody has mentioned this. Graphics are great , and you can max it out. Download some high-res texture packs, increase your view range and voilá - a picture perfect game, with great gameplay to boot.

Have you ever actually played CoD4?
