I'm kind of in a situation. I can't bring my playstation up here in college (gotta share it with the little brother) and the only pc game i play is WoW. Our internet bandwidth goes down the crapper during the day so no wow for me. Anyway i hear the some of the latest FPS's on PC rock so i was just looking for some suggestions. the last pc FPS i played was the original CS lol.

You can always get demos. I'm a big fan of the Unreal Tournament series. Always had a good "feel" to the games. You might also check out Far Cry.
-
what is the x1600 in the w3j capable of playing at a decent rez?
-
if you are not bored at 1.6, i would say stick with it. i still play 1.6 everyday.
-
i want something to challenge my laptop
-
Ok, here we go. Some good FPS Games (Single player) you really should give a go:
Far Cry
Unreal Tournament 2004
Half Life 2
Aliens vs Predator
Aliens vs Predator 2
Red Faction
Half Life Original
Swat 4
Quake IV
Call of Duty 2
Hidden and Dangerous 2
Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Call of Duty + United Offensive
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Serious Sam
Vietcong
Kingpin: Life of Crime
Boiling Point
Doom 3
Chronicles of Riddick
FEAR
Thats just a minor list. Titles like CS, BF1942 and BF2, etc, are crap without a net connection. Does it have to be an FPS? I love FPS games but recently I've started getting into RTS games like Dawn of War and Ground Control. Much more fun as a single player experience and a good change.
Failing that let us know what sort of FPS titles you like, and we can recommend something more specific. -
I used to play CS pre-steam, actually when i went to sign up for steam someone had used my key.....anyway war games are nice i dont mind sci-fi either
I was thinking maybe COD2 ,Far Cry, or FEAR. Can an x1600 play FEAR? anyone have suggestions out of these 3. -

Head down to your local store. Top class older titles like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, etc are chip as chips. My motto is usually "why pay 50 for a new title when you can get about 5 older great games for that price."
come to think of it i've never used that motto before now. but its true!
Regarding newer games, the X1600 is a capable card and will run Fear at high settings. -
can i download a demo of Far Cry or F.E.A.R. anywhere?
I don't like buying games without playing them. -
If you want something free, try WarRock. It's still a beta, and isn't the prettiest looking, but it's pretty good...

Well, I would personally recommend FEAR. I completed it about two weeks ago and its possibly one of the best FPS that I have played in a long time. THere is also an expansion pack due out soon. For a demo of the original game or the expansion pack go to www.gamershell.com, downloads are available there and you don't have to register.
Prey is also very good, I've been watching my friend play it lately and it looks nuts! Portal technology, gravity pads, sort of game you an get motion sickness off ! Again, demo available on www.gamershell.com -
thx for the advice guys. Once my bandwidth kicks in again ill make the download
-
half life 2 is considered by some reviewers to be the best game ever made. if your looking to see what the FPS has to offer, its a great place to start.
-
is there anyway i can get F.E.A.R. to run at the w3j's native rez?
-
fear is full of win infact its made of it.
One of the best fps I have ever played
as far as multiplayer online first person shooters go..
Enemy territory= lord of all.
(in my opinion enemy territory rapes halo's meaning of life) -
Also, FEAR is a **** good game. Not just a **** good FPS... a **** good game. I've played through and beaten it at least three times in the past few months. It never gets old. -
I didn't like fearcombat at all. The maps are too cramped and there isn't enough strategy or teamwork.
I think I'll get red orchestra. -
Also, you can't beat the fact that it's free.
All of us fans should get a NBR game going... -
ummm i put fear on the "auto-detect" settings and i notice excessive screen tearing. the FPS doesn't seem bad but it seem slike my w3j screen doesn't keep up. 4xAA 1024x768 rez some settings on medium some on max
-
If you're tearing then you should either turn up the settings or turn VSYNC on. That means you're over 60fps (probably).
Oh, I almost forgot, to get widescreen you need to edit the settings.cfg in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEARCombat. Just change the width and height. Sometimes it will revert to 640x480 or something if you try to change other settings in-game after you've edited that file, so set everything else the way you want it, then change the resolution. -
w00t that definitely fixed my tearing
, so what does vsync do just drop my fps to 60 so my screen doesn't **** itself?
lol i figured out why FEAR was lagging too, it turned my cpu settings down, my gpu was doin fine. I've got 4xAA and 8xAF on right now and its doing good. w00t glad i bought a x1600 -
I'm telling ya, soft shadows are way cooler than AA. You got all the other settings maxed, too?
-
If you get your resolution up to native, you can turn off the AA and turn on the soft shadows... an amazing feature. And yeah, F.E.A.R. has a tendency to put Core Duos at the minimum settings... apparently it thinks a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 is better.
-
yeah when i set it at native rez my fps drops A LOT i wonder why? i have vsync on though to help with tearing....
-
its not the rez its my cpu, i have a T2500 but when i set the cpu settings on high/max and i shoot or something breaks the game slows down a LOT. I tried the game with soft shadows on/off with cpu settings on high with no change. So its the cpu thats hindering it not the x1600 which makes me happy
. Do you think it could have something to do with the fact that i have 1 gig of ram? im not sure how much F.E.A.R. uses...
-
This might be what you already said you did, but have you tried setting your Power Scheme to "Always On" in the Control Panel? That would be a good test to see if your CPU is really the problem. I have a T2500 as well and don't have any problems there.
-
yep everything is on never, two things though doesn't really seem like my fan kicks in.....i wonder why....it gets hotter when i play WoW....I don't get it i turned softshadows ON everything else up to max with cpu down to med and it still lagged. (1280x768) on the other hand i turned cpu up to high with AFx8 and AAx4 and it didn't have any problems wtf lol.....
Does softshadows draw more ram (x1600 is expandable up to 512)? hmmm
its gotta be my ram dude cuz now i reloaded it SS on cpu on HIGH and the fps is a lil slow but its much better than before....do you have 2 gigs of ram -
can you use SS and AA at the same time?
-
some setting must be set to clock my card down because my fps hovers around 30 no matter what game im playing.....
i just read a post about a guy getting 50+ fps in WoW with a x1400, with shaders on and my native rez i only get 25-30 sometimes it even dips down to 20 -
Random bump. Seeing as I have finally weaned myself off SOFII and Return to Castlewolfenstein
(*old* games I know)
I'm wondering with my X1600 425/378 (yes I know its under clocked, but work with me), what sort of settings should I try for optimal performance at say 1024x768 res and/or 1280x800 for F.E.A.R?
Is it even worth hacking the game to play at my native widescreen res because that would mean I have to turn stuff down? I'm not quite clued up on what the settings mean. I read some have AA off/low so soft shadows are on, but wouldn't it be better to have AA than ss? What do X1600 owners use for Fear?
Also HL2. Do you need the internet to connect to Steam each time you play, or is it for the game install only? I ask as sometimes if I'm out and about and bored, I may play a game. You don't always have free wi-fi around so...
Thanks people -
At least Fileshack seems to have the demo of FEAR lying around.
You won't be disappointed with FEAR though, I'm not a particular fan of first person shooters but it got me absolutely addicted. Given it doesn't provide huge amounts of single player content (being used to RPGs for 30 hours rather than 10), and it gets rather easy, and the whole "paranormal" thing dies off very fast... Uhm. Yes, but it's still a very brilliant game.
Edit. And it's not all that "demanding" graphically, it slogs down just a little on native resolution, if you scale down some details. I prefered lower resolution and higher details though. -
HL2 = greatest shooter ever made. Its amazing, it really is a must play if you like FPS's (for its SP story). I don't think you have to connect to steam everytime (I don't have to). I highly reccomend you picking up HL2 if you haven't yet played it.
I just finished it last night, and its pretty great, I've heard that I should wait for Ep2/3 to come out before getting into Ep1, as it is too short. But either way HL2 is a great play, and you wont be missing anything due to Ep2/3 not haveing come out yet, if you wanted to you could wait for them to be released, but I wouldnt' lol. -
I picked up prey the other day...for £8 pounds (~16USD) which was a bargain...i love it but i love F.E.A.R especially the multiplayer even more (havent tried multiplayer for prey yet)
i gotta agree with abyss HL2...what a game...havent played it in a while but i will definitly install it again... -
First off, those are two awesome games to try. Now here are some links from 3D Downloads, I used to download games form here all the time, in fact I think I did download Far Cry from this website. The other nice thing about Far Cry is that you should be able to pick it up for $20 or less easy.

HL2 is great but, I hate the constant loading of levels. Mainly I bought HL2 for the same reason as HL1, the mod scene. There are tons of mods, and I've been messing around with the Source SDK.
For multiplayer, I really like Battlefield 2142. I'm just starting to get into FEAR and FEAR combat after watching my friend play it on his Dell Inspiron 6000 (which is packing a Pentium M and a X300 card surprisingly). -

You guys should try Soldier Front also, its a new free game, during its Beta testing stage.. Free Download 250mb. http://sfront.ijji.com/
Need a new FPS to play
