For WWII strategy games try Combat Mission. They have a new one with modern combat called Combat Mission: Shock Force, but the requirements might be too high for your laptop to play it. Some of the older Combat Mission games would play fine though.

Is turn based strategy ok? If so you can't beat HoMM3.

    Galactic Civilizations II + expansions

    Sins of a Solar Empire

    Civ IV + expansions

Get all of these and you'll be set for the next few years.

This game is awful. It brings nothing new to the RTS genre.

+1 for Company of Heroes (plus expansion Opposing Fronts).
Just make sure to check if the X3100 can handle it.

Many people would disagree with that (including all the reviews); in fact, the Red Alert and Command & Conquer series pretty much started the genre.

But, I digress; people have their opinions.

What's a good game to start with? First timer here...not really into sci-fi stuff but if there is something highly recommended I'll consider it. I was thinking of getting C&C 3: Tiberium Wars.

^^ Generally speaking, I read the reviews for a game before I buy it; they are usually pretty accurate evaluations of how good a given game is.

Other than HOMM3 I would not recommend playing ANY of the games listed on the x3100. You will be disappointed. Try the demos first to see if you can tolerate the frame rate.

    I say Warcraft 3.

I still pick it up and play it now and then, not matter how many times you played it or beat it, there is always a new game on battlenet under the custom games section as people get very creative with the map editor and make totally new games out of the old one.

Everything from RPG's to Samurai Vs Ninja.

Heroes 5 is fun, but the X3100 might not be able to run it since the requirements for 5 are quite the step up from 4 and the rest of the series.

I second the warcraft 3 suggestion. Huge community and no RTS game has come close.

Tiberium Wars was awful from an RTS standpoint. Balance and Micro and Unit Diversity and A Working Economy System were thrown right out the door.

Warcraft 3 + TFT is generally considered to be one of the best RTS of all time. If you haven't played it yet, go for it.
Otherwise, Homeworld 2 is a really complex game that should run just fine on the x3100, although it's quite difficult.
There is also CIV4 and Hearts of Iron 2, if you don't mind a lack of story.
I wouldn't really recommend Tiberium Wars. The balance is quite awful and the story isn't nearly as good as it was in the predecessors. And this is coming from a lifelong C&C fan...

i agree, but just check the system specs and you'll see supreme comm to be a big bit too much for it. civ series... well civ 3 seems, i believe, better than 4th edition. b&w2 - now that's a good title, but i'm not sure if it'll run smoothly on the hardware in question.

to the OP: i "nth" (is it 5th or 6th time you see this title here?) the warcraft 3 w/ exps...

it's high time you finished it :D

your laptop is probably going to have really hard time to run this title, actually i doubt it'll be playable even in 800x600res... as for the desktop from your sig, it should work perfectly well (i finished rome tw with exps for the first time on P4 [email protected]+1GBRAM+Radeon9800Pro).

Rome should work, but you'll have to turn the settings down quite a bit, especially res, animations and number of soldiers per unit. I'm sorry to say it won't look nearly as good as in the screenshot on your laptop, but your desktop ought to run it just fine.

but are there any other games like Rome Total War?

Maybe one that is a few years older? so it can run well on my system.

I will however download the demo to test it.

There are other games in the Total War series. Shogun and Medieval are both older than Rome and don't require as powerful of a system.

Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade (better than Winter Assault)
Warhammer: Mark of Chaos (very similar to Total Wars but smaller scale)
Age of Mythology + Titans + Golden Gift official addon
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

a good game is a good game regardless of whether it brings something 'new' to the table. there aren't nearly enough solid RTS games to overlook Tiberium Wars.

I've started the campaign at normal and was able to finish it completely.
Some levels like Hill 192 were pretty tough though and have taken me quite some time.

While I recommended WC3, I still always liked the way WCII and SC played more. I did not like the addition of Hero's into the game system. So I hope we get back to the basics when Starcraft 2 graces us with its presence.

My vote is for Civ 4 + all expansions. If you like it you love it and yoiu will never be able to stop :) just one more turn...
It is by the way the only game I know that has a built in timer that you could set for so long you want to play...

A few other games had that. MoO3 comes to mind - of course in that case, the timer ended up being sadly unnecessary (except for a few die-hard fans I suppose).

What we really need is a decent epic fantasy rts. Warcraft 3 is nice and all, but it's a bit dated, and the style isn't quite so "epic" - it's more a tactical game than full out strategy.

Battle for Middle Earth series was nice too, but it seems to be too derivative of the movies and books IMO.

We need something along the lines of Master of Magic meets Sins of a Solar Empire....
