    Hey guys

I have recently purchased an ASUS V2S which comes with a 8600M GS, and received it before it was known how crippled this card is, in this particular machine ( see this thread for further info).

Fact is, the GPU comes with a 500mhz core clock speed and 400 mhz memory, I could live with this, if it wasn't for the fact that the memory bus is 64 bit instead of the expected 128 bit.

This makes the card perform, well, disappointing:

The thing is, now that this card has a 64 bit memory bus, the specs come out pretty similar to those of the 8400M GS, except for the 100mhz faster core clock, and I would very much like to figure out just how similar, and if it can even be justified to call this card an 8600M GS...

Therefore I would really appreciate, if any of you guys with either an 8600M GS or an 8400M GS could snap a screenshot from the program everest ( download), like so:

To help me figure what how my card is similar to/differs from "normal versions" of these cards.

Feel free to include the 3dmark06 score of your card as well, everything helps :).

    Thanks in advance :)

I believe my 3dmark 06 score is about 2900 at 1440x900 and 3300 at default settings and i have a 1520 8600m gt ddr2. Dunno if that helps lol

    Yours is a G86M? I haven't seen other 8600M GS everest but it's supposed to be a 84M no?

This 8600M GS would be less powerfull than a 8400M GT, in fact, the desktop 8500GT would be better, and the 8500GT performs like the vanilla 6800, and the 6600GT is the minimum card right now.

PS: The 8400M GT performs a bit better than the 8500GT for whatever reasons

That is a pretty sad 3DMark06 score for a 8600m GS. An 8400m GS scores around 1400, so for a card which is supposed to be leaps above it score only 100 more doesn't make much sense.

I also have a 8600M GS, when i compared my everest GPU stats with your screenshot, everything was the same except the Bus-Width,Real Clock, Effective clock.

    I have hp dv9548ca

    Your Bus-width: 64bit, Mine: 128 Bit
Your Real Clock: 399MHz, Mine: 800MHz
Your Effective Clock: 799Mhz, Mine: 1600MHz

Conslusion: Something is wrong with the configuration of this card, i suggest re-installing the OS and trying to tweak the bios, or demand a refund, because this card spec's should be universal.

No, nothing is wrong with the card, bios, or anything else. Asus has designed and implemented this card with a 64-bit bus width (as it's up to the ODM's to decide upon the specs of the card, not nVidia). So yes, it will perform like an OC'd 8400m-GS.

is it possible for the consumer to tweak the card spec's? i would like to get \as much performace out of my GPU as possible?

You can OC the card, if that's what you mean, however you can't change hardware specs like the memory bus width. For maximum performance I would recommend getting the newest drivers from LaptopVideo2Go and overclocking your card.

Actually, 8400GS "should" have 600mhz RAM (although I don't know if any system builders implement them that way), so I am not even sure if its as fast as a "proper" 8400GS...If you intended to play 3D games on your laptop, I recommend you to seek a return&refund. It seems all V2S have "8400Gs disguised as 8600GS".

Interesting - so HP put RAM for 8600GS in dv9548ca that is faster than Nvidia specification?

I meant the core clock, which is 100MHz higher than 8400M-GS specs. And 400MHz is stock for DDR2 RAM.

I don't know of any 8600M-GS' stocked at 800MHz mem, my guess is that user OC'd his card.

Well that's dissapointing. Seems like the V2S gets worse and worse. As do Asus. What the hell is upp with them?
